Abstract

A communication system includes a receive antenna for receiving communication signals, processing circuitry for processing the received communication signals and repeating the signals for further transmission and at least one transmit antenna for transmitting the repeated signals. The processing circuitry utilizes configurable settings for controlling the operation of the communication system and the configurable settings are variable for varying the operation of the system. The processing circuitry is further operable for receiving inputs regarding current operating conditions of the communication system and for selectively adapting the configurable settings of the system based upon the operating condition inputs.

Claims

1. A communication system comprising:

at least one receive antenna for receiving communication signals;

processing circuitry for processing the received communication signals and repeating the signals for further transmission;

at least one transmit antenna for transmitting the repeated signals;

the processing circuitry utilizing at least one configurable setting for controlling the operation of the communication system, the configurable setting being adaptable for varying the operation of the system;

the processing circuitry further operable for receiving at least one input regarding a current operating condition of the communication system, the processing circuitry selectively adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system based upon the at least one operating condition input.

2. The communication system of claim 1 wherein a plurality of settings is configurable and the processing circuitry selectively adapts a plurality of configurable settings of the system based upon the at least one operating condition input.

3. The communication system of claim 2 wherein the selective adaptation includes adapting some of the plurality of configurable settings of the system and leaving at least one of the configurable settings unchanged.

4. The communication system of claim 2 wherein the selective adaptation includes adapting some of the plurality of configurable settings of the system and setting at least one of the configurable settings to a default setting.

5. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the at least one configurable setting is associated with a configuration, the configuration being selected based upon the at least one input regarding operating conditions.

6. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry is operable for receiving a plurality of inputs regarding current operating conditions for adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system based upon the operating condition inputs.

7. The communication system of claim 1 wherein at least one operating condition defines a condition of the system, the processing circuitry selectively adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that the condition is met.

8. The communication system of claim 1 wherein a plurality of operating conditions define a condition set of the system, the processing circuitry selectively adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that at least one of the operating conditions of the condition set is met.

9. The communication system of claim 1 wherein a plurality of operating conditions define a condition set of the system, the processing circuitry selectively adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that all of operating conditions of the condition set are met.

10. The communication system of claim 5 wherein the configuration is stored in memory.

11. The communication system of claim 8 wherein the condition set is stored in memory.

12. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the geographical location of the communication system.

13. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the identification of at least one base station that is communicating with the communication system.

14. The communication system of claim 13 wherein the at least one input directed to the identification of at least one base station that is communicating with the communication system includes information regarding at least one of:

the location of the base station, a network property associated with the base station, and a signal property associated with the base station.

15. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the identification of at least one network that is communicating with the communication system.

16. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to environmental details of the communication system.

17. The communication system of claim 16 wherein the at least one input directed to environmental details of the communication system includes information regarding at least one of :

the speed of a mobile platform containing the system, ambient temperature, time of day, traffic conditions on the system, obstacles to transmission in the system, logistical information regarding a mobile platform containing the system.

18. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the communication system is a repeater.

19. The communication system of claim 1 wherein the communication system is a distributed antenna system.

20. A method of propagating communication signals comprising:

receiving communication signals;

processing the received communication signals and repeating the signals for further transmission;

transmitting the repeated signals;

utilizing at least one configurable setting for controlling the processing of the signals, the configurable setting being adaptable for varying the operation of the system;

receiving at least one input regarding a current operating condition of the communication system;

selectively adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system based upon the at least one operating condition input.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein a plurality of settings is configurable and further comprising selectively adapting a plurality of configurable settings of the system based upon the at least one operating condition input.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the selective adaptation includes adapting some of the plurality of configurable settings of the system and leaving at least one of the configurable settings unchanged.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein the selective adaptation includes adapting some of the plurality of configurable settings of the system and setting at least one of the configurable settings to a default setting.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein the at least one configurable setting is associated with a configuration and further comprising selecting the configuration based upon the at least one input regarding operating conditions.

25. The method of claim 20 further comprising receiving a plurality of inputs regarding current operating conditions and adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system based upon the operating condition inputs.

26. The method of claim 20 wherein at least one operating condition defines a condition of the system and further comprising adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that the condition is met.

27. The method of claim 20 wherein a plurality of operating conditions define a condition set of the system and further comprising adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that at least one of the operating conditions of the condition set is met.

28. The method of claim 20 wherein a plurality of operating conditions define a condition set of the system and further comprising adapting the at least one configurable setting of the system when the at least one input indicates that all of operating conditions of the condition set are met.

29. The method of claim 20 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the geographical location of the communication system.

30. The method of claim 20 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the identification of at least one base station that is communicating with the communication system.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein the at least one input directed to the identification of at least one base station that is communicating with the communication system includes information regarding at least one of :

the location of the base station, a network property associated with the base station, and a signal property associated with the base station.

32. The method of claim 20 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to the identification of at least one network that is communicating with the communication system.

33. The method of claim 20 wherein the at least one input regarding a current operating condition includes at least one input directed to environmental details of the communication system.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein the at least one input directed to environmental details of the communication system includes information regarding at least one of :

the speed of a mobile platform containing the system, ambient temperature, time of day, traffic conditions on the system, obstacles to transmission in the system, logistical information regarding a mobile platform containing the system.
