Abstract

A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating media presentations is described. The application includes a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI has (1) a composite display area for displaying graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the composite presentation and (2) a navigation tool including several selectable navigation markers associated with several navigable locations in the composite presentation. The selection of a navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the selected navigation marker.

Claims

1. A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating a composite media presentation, said application comprising a graphical user interface (GUI), said GUI comprising:

a) a composite display area for displaying a set of graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the composite presentation; and

b) a navigation tool comprising a plurality of selectable navigation markers associated with a plurality of navigable locations in the composite media presentation, wherein the selection of a navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the selected navigation marker.

2. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the graphical representations of the media clips in the composite display area span along a timeline and the locations comprise instances along the timeline.

3. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations of different media clips in the composite presentation.

4. The computer readable medium of claim 3, wherein each selectable navigation marker is a thumbnail image of the media clip at the location that is associated with the selectable navigation marker.

The computer readable medium of claim 4, wherein each particular navigation marker is associated with a particular media clip at a particular location in the composite presentation, and the particular navigation marker is associated with the particular location through the navigation marker'"'"'s association with the particular media clip.

6. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations within the composite presentation that are associated with different sets of media clips in the composite presentation.

7. The computer readable medium of claim 6, wherein each particular navigation marker is a thumbnail image of a particular media clip within the particular set of media clips that is associated with the particular location that is associated with the particular navigation marker.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 6, wherein at least one of the different sets of media clips associated with a navigation marker includes more than one media clip.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 8, wherein at least one of the different sets of media clips associated with a navigation marker includes one media clip.

10. The computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising a media display area for displaying a plurality of selectable elements corresponding to a plurality of media clips that are available for placement in the composite media presentation, wherein selecting a particular element and placing the particular element over a particular navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the particular navigation marker.

11. The computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein placing the particular element within the composite display area causes the media clip corresponding to the particular element to be included in the composite presentation.

12. A method of providing a media-editing application for creating multimedia presentations, the method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying a set of graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the composite presentation; and

providing a navigation tool comprising a plurality of selectable navigation markers associated with a plurality of navigable locations in the composite media presentation, wherein the selection of a navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the selected navigation marker.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising providing a display area for displaying the composite presentation.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the navigation tool is placed adjacent to the composite display area and spans along the composite display area in a direction along which media clips are arranged in the composite display area.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein a plurality of navigation markers are arranged in at least one row that spans along the composite display area in said direction.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the navigation tool is placed within the composite display area and spans along the composite display area in a direction along which media clips are arranged in the composite display area.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the navigation tool further comprises a set of selectable elements for navigating through a set of recently-selected locations along the composite display area.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the set of selectable elements comprises a back button and a forward button.

19. A method of creating composite media presentations using a media editing application, said method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the media presentation;

providing a navigation tool comprising a plurality of selectable navigation markers associated with a plurality of navigable locations in the composite media presentation;

and providing a media display area for displaying a plurality of selectable elements corresponding to a plurality of media clips that are available for placement in the composite media presentation, wherein selecting a particular element and placing the particular element over a particular navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the particular navigation marker.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein placing the particular element within the composite display area causes the media clip corresponding to the particular element to be included in the composite presentation.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations within the composite presentation that are associated with different sets of media clips in the composite presentation.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the media clip corresponding to the particular element is added to the set of media clips that is associated with the particular navigation marker.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the graphical representations of the media clips in the composite display area span along a timeline and the locations comprise instances along the timeline.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations of different media clips in the composite presentation.

25. A computer readable medium storing a computer program for execution by at least one processor, the computer program comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying a plurality of graphical representations of media clips along a timeline for a composite media presentation in a composite display area of a media-editing application;

displaying a plurality of selectable navigation markers associated with a plurality of navigable locations in the composite media presentation; and

receiving user input to select a navigation marker, wherein the selection of the navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the selected navigation marker.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein the graphical representations of the media clips in the composite display area span along a timeline and the locations comprise instances along the timeline.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations of different media clips in the composite presentation.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 27, wherein each selectable navigation marker is a thumbnail image of the media clip at the location that is associated with the selectable navigation marker.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 25, the GUI further comprising a media display area for displaying a plurality of selectable elements corresponding to a plurality of media clips that are available for placement in the composite media presentation, wherein selecting a particular element and placing the particular element over a particular navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the particular navigation marker.

30. The computer readable medium of claim 29, wherein placing the particular element within the composite display area causes the media clip corresponding to the particular element to be included in the composite presentation.

31. The computer readable medium of claim 30, wherein the different locations that are specified by the different navigation markers are locations within the composite presentation that are associated with different sets of media clips in the composite presentation.

32. The computer readable medium of claim 31, wherein the media clip corresponding to the particular element is added to the set of media clips that is associated with the particular navigation marker.
