Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for a continuous analyte sensor, such as a continuous glucose sensor. One such system utilizes first and second working electrodes to measure analyte or non-analyte related signal, both of which electrode include an interference domain.

Claims

1. A sensor for continuously measuring a concentration of an analyte in a biological fluid, the sensor comprising:

a first working electrode comprising a first exposed electroactive surface, the first working electrode comprising a first wire;

a second working electrode comprising a second exposed electroactive surface, the second working electrode comprising a second wire; and

an insulator covering both the first working electrode and the second working electrode, the insulator configured to provide insulation between the first working electrode and the second working electrode and to hold the first working electrode and the second working electrode.

2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first exposed electroactive surface and the second exposed electroactive surface are arranged in a staggered configuration along a longitudinal axis of the sensor.

The sensor of claim 2, wherein the first exposed electroactive surface and the second exposed electroactive surface are staggered by a distance such that diffusion of measured species between the first exposed electroactive surface and the second exposed electroactive surface is substantially reduced or eliminated.

4. The sensor of claim 3, wherein the distance is from about 0.02 inches to about 0.12 inches.

The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first working electrode comprises a first electrical connector, wherein the second working electrode comprises a second electrical connector, and wherein the first electrical connector and the second electrical connector are longitudinally spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the sensor.

6. The sensor of claim 1, further comprising a reference electrode.

7. The sensor of claim 6, wherein the reference electrode is configured to surround the first working electrode and the second working electrode.

8. The sensor of claim 6, wherein the first working electrode comprises a first electrical connector, wherein the second working electrode comprises a second electrical connector, wherein the reference electrode comprises a third electrical connector, and wherein the first electrical connector, the second electrical connector, and the third electrical connector are longitudinally spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the sensor.

9. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first wire and the second wire both have a substantially cylindrical shape.

10. The sensor of claim 1, further comprising a membrane.

11. The sensor of claim 10, wherein the membrane comprises a layer configured to substantially restrict or block a flow of interfering species therethrough.

12. The sensor of claim 10, wherein the membrane comprises a layer configured to control a flux of oxygen and analyte therethrough.

13. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first working electrode and the second working electrode are arranged together in a parallel configuration.

14. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first working electrode or the second working electrode comprises a plated wire.

15. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first working electrode or the second working electrode comprises a wire that has a circular cross-sectional shape.

16. A sensor for continuously measuring a concentration of an analyte in a biological fluid, the sensor comprising:

a first working electrode disposed beneath an active enzymatic portion of a sensor membrane, wherein the first working electrode comprises a first wire, and wherein the first working electrode comprises a first exposed electroactive surface;

a second working electrode disposed beneath an inactive-enzymatic or a non-enzymatic portion of a sensor membrane, wherein the second working electrode comprises a second exposed electroactive surface; and

an insulator covering both the first working electrode and the second working electrode, the insulator configured to provide insulation between the first working electrode and the second working electrode.

17. The sensor of claim 16, wherein the first exposed electroactive surface and the second exposed electroactive surface are arranged in a staggered configuration along a longitudinal axis of the sensor.

18. The sensor of claim 16, wherein the first working electrode comprises a first electrical connector, wherein the second working electrode comprises a second electrical connector, and wherein the first electrical connector and the second electrical connector are longitudinally spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the sensor.

19. The sensor of claim 16, wherein at least one of the first working electrode or the second working electrode comprises a plated wire.

20. The sensor of claim 16, wherein the first working electrode and the second working electrode are arranged together in a parallel configuration.
