Abstract

A device for deploying a cardiac valve prosthesis includes at least one constraint member for radially constraining radially expandable annular portions of the valve. The constraint member is actuatable to release the annular formations constrained thereby and permit radial expansion of these annular formations. The constraint member has associated a first, slow-acting actuating mechanism and a second, fast-acting mechanism, adapted to produce relatively slow and fast release of the annular formations constrained thereby. The device may include a first constraint member and second constraint member in the form of telescoping sleeves. The slow-acting actuating mechanism will thus act on the outer sleeve, while the fast-acting mechanism will act on the inner sleeve to produce, respectively, slow and fast release of the annular formations.

Claims

1. A device for deploying a cardiac valve prosthesis, including a first expandable portion and a second expandable portion, at an implantation site, the device comprising:

a first constraint member for radially constraining the first expandable portion;

a second constraint member for radially constraining the second expandable portion;

a rotary actuation member coupled to the first constraint for retracting the first constraint such that the first expandable portion is deployed; and

a slidable actuation member coupled to the second constraint member for retracting the second constraint such that the second expandable portion is deployed;

wherein the first and the second actuation members are independently adjustable, such that the first and second expandable portions may be independently deployed.

A device for deploying a cardiac valve prosthesis including radially expandable annular portions, the device including at least one constraint member for radially constraining the annular portions, the at least one constraint member actuatable to release the annular portions constrained thereby to permit radial expansion of the annular portions, wherein the at least one constraint member has associated a first, slow-acting actuating mechanism and a second, fast-acting mechanism, respectively, to produce relatively slow and fast release of the annular portions constrained thereby.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one constraint member includes at least one sleeve slidably actuatable along an axis whereby the at least one constraint member releases the annular portions constrained thereby.

4. The device of claim 2, including first and second constraint members having associated a first, slow-acting actuating mechanism and a second, fast-acting mechanism, respectively, to produce relatively slow and fast release of the annular portions constrained thereby.

5. The device of claim 4, including first and second sleeves providing the first and second constraint members, the first and second sleeves slidably actuatable along a common axis whereby the constraint members release the annular portions constrained thereby.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the first and second sleeves include telescoped sleeves.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the telescoped sleeves include an outer sleeve having associated the first, slow-acting actuating mechanism and an inner sleeve having associated the second, fast-acting mechanism.

8. The device of claim 4, wherein the second, fast-acting mechanism is also active on the first constraint member to ensure unimpeded radial expansion of the annular formation constrained by the second constraint member once released by the second constraint member.

The device of claim 8, including first and second telescoped sleeves providing the first and second constraint members, the first sleeve slidably retractable by the first, slow-acting actuating mechanism to bring the first constraint member in correspondence with the second constraint member, the second, fast-acting mechanism actuatable to jointly slide along a common axis the first and second telescoped sleeves with the first constraint member brought in correspondence with the second constraint member.

10. The device of claim 2, wherein the first, slow-acting actuating mechanism is a screw-actuated mechanism.

11. The device of claim 10, including a sleeve member providing the at least one constraint member, and wherein the screw-actuated mechanism includes a rotary member rotatable around the sleeve member as well as co-operative threaded portions carried by the sleeve member and the rotary member.

12. The device of claim 2, wherein the second, fast-acting mechanism includes a lock member which, once defeated, renders the at least one constraint member freely movable to release the annular formation constrained thereby.

13. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one constraint member is arranged at a distal valve holder portion of the device.

14. The device of claim 13, including a shaft extending towards the distal valve holder portion, the shaft including a peripheral cavity to receive at least one of the annular portions of the valve radially constrained by the at least one constraint member.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the distal valve holder portion has a diameter of between about 10 and about 27 mm.

16. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one constraint member has a marginal outer edge with at least one notch to provide a reference in the angular positioning of the cardiac valve prosthesis.
