Abstract

User interfaces for browsing and/or searching are described. In one embodiment, a method includes displaying a first display area for display representations of documents matching a search query, the first display area configured to display content of the documents which can have a plurality of different types of content including at least one of text-based content and a folder, and displaying a second display area for selecting a selected document to be displayed in the first display area. Other embodiments are also described, and computer readable media and apparatuses are also described.

Claims

1. A computer readable storage medium storing executable program instructions which when executed by a data processing system cause the data processing system to perform method comprising:

displaying a set of file system objects of a list of file system objects, including files and folders, using a display area having a center section for displaying a selected object, a first side section for displaying a first object adjacent to the selected object, and a second side section for displaying a second object adjacent to the selected object;

selecting either the first object or second object to designate the selected object;

displaying the selected object in the center section in response to the selecting; and

displaying a different first object in the first side section or a different second object in the second side section in response to the selecting.

2. The medium as in claim 1 wherein the set of file system objects comprises all the file system objects in the list of file system objects.

3. The medium as in claim 1 wherein the set of file system objects comprises a portion of the file system objects in the list of file system objects.

4. The medium as in claim 1 wherein the list of file system objects comprises the result of a search query.

5. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising presenting the list of file system objects by a file management system program that allows browsing of file system objects in a file system.

6. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising configuring the selected object to receive an input through a user interface object.

7. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising zooming a file system object to an enlarged view.

8. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising selecting a file system object by scrolling in the display area.

9. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising selecting a file system object by single or double clicking the first object or the second object.

10. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising:

displaying the first side section in a first stack fashion such that a first top most stack section displays the first object that precedes the selected object; and

displaying the second side section in a second stack fashion such that a second top most stack section displays the second object that follows the selected object.

11. The medium as in claim 10 further comprising displaying only one file system object with the first side section or the second side section.

12. The medium as in claim 10 further comprising:

displaying the first object which is most adjacent to the selected file object the closest to the center section; and

displaying the first object which is next adjacent to the selected object the next closest to the center section.

13. The medium as in claim 10 further comprising:

displaying the second object which is most adjacent to the selected file object the closest to the center section; and

displaying the second object which is next adjacent to the selected object the next closest to the center section.

14. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising scrolling the selected object displayed in the center section in a horizontal direction.

15. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising scrolling the selected object displayed in the center section in a vertical direction.

16. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a zoom input from a view of the selected object; and

displaying the selected object in a zoom view showing more detail according to the zoom input.

17. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising displaying the selected object configured to receive an input to cause a presenting of a time-based media over time.

18. The medium as in claim 17 further comprising displaying the selected object configured to receive an input to cause the time-based media to be presented in an enlarged view.

19. The medium as in claim 18 further comprising displaying the time-based media in the enlarged view by progressively enlarging the time-based media while the time-based media is being presented.

20. The medium as in claim 19 further comprising displaying the time-based media without substantial interruptions as it is progressively enlarging.

21. The medium as in claim 1 further comprising displaying multiple pages of the selected object concurrently within the center section in response to receiving an input through a user interface object.

22. The medium as in claim 21 wherein the user interface object comprises a page forward button or a page backward button.

23. A machine implemented method comprising:

displaying a set of file system objects of a list of file system objects, including files and folders, using a display area having a center section for displaying a selected object, a first side section for displaying a first object adjacent to the selected object, and a second side section for displaying a second object adjacent to the selected object;

selecting either the first object or second object to designate a selected object;

displaying the selected object in the center section in response to the selecting; and

displaying a different first object in the first side section or a different second object in the second side section in response to the selecting.

24. The method as in claim 23 wherein the set of file system objects comprises all the file system objects in the list of file system objects.

25. The method as in claim 23 wherein the set of file system objects comprises a portion of the file system objects in the list of file system objects.

26. The method as in claim 23 wherein the list of file system objects comprises the result of a search query.

27. The method as in claim 23 further comprising presenting the list of file system objects by a file management system program that allows browsing of file system objects in a file system.

28. The method as in claim 23 further comprising configuring the selected object to receive an input through a user interface object.

29. The method as in claim 23 further comprising zooming a file system object to an enlarged view.

30. The method as in claim 23 further comprising selecting a file system object by scrolling in the display area.

31. The method as in claim 23 further comprising selecting a file system object by single or double clicking the first object or the second object.

32. The method as in claim 23 further comprising:

displaying the first side section in a first stack fashion such that a first top most stack section displays the first object that precedes the selected object; and

displaying the second side section in a second stack fashion such that a second top most stack section displays the second object that follows the selected object.

33. The method as in claim 32 further comprising displaying only one file system object with the first side section or the second side section.

34. The method as in claim 32 further comprising:

displaying the first object which is most adjacent to the selected file object the closest to the center section; and

displaying the first object which is next adjacent to the selected object the next closest to the center section.

35. The method as in claim 32 further comprising:

displaying the second object which is most adjacent to the selected file object the closest to the center section; and

displaying the second object which is next adjacent to the selected object the next closest to the center section.

36. The method as in claim 23 further comprising scrolling the selected object displayed in the center section in a horizontal direction.

37. The method as in claim 23 further comprising scrolling the selected object displayed in the center section in a vertical direction.

38. The method as in claim 23 further comprising:

receiving a zoom input from a view of the selected object; and

displaying the selected object in a zoom view showing more detail according to the zoom input.

39. The method as in claim 23 further comprising displaying the selected item configured to receive an input to cause a presenting of a time-based media over time.

40. The method as in claim 39 further comprising displaying the selected object configured to receive an input to cause the time-based media to be presented in an enlarged view.

41. The method as in claim 40 further comprising displaying the time-based media in the enlarged view by progressively enlarging the time-based media while the time-based media is being presented.

42. The method as in claim 41 further comprising displaying the time-based media without substantial interruptions as it is progressively enlarging.

43. The method as in claim 23 further comprising displaying multiple pages of the selected object concurrently within the center section in response to receiving an input through a user interface object.

44. The method as in claim 43 wherein the user interface object comprises a page forward button or a page backward button.

45. A data processing system comprising:

means for displaying a set of file system objects of a list of file system objects, including files and folders, using a display area having a center section for displaying a selected object, a first side section for displaying a first object adjacent to the selected object, and a second side section for displaying a second object adjacent to the selected object;

means for selecting either the first object or second object to designate a selected object;

means for displaying the selected object in the center section in response to the selecting; and

means for displaying a different first object in the first side section or a different second object in the second side section in response to the selecting.
