Abstract

A system includes a consumer electronic device adapted to render a media content and a hand-held, portable device having a touch screen display, a transmitter, a receiver, and a processing unit. The processing unit of the hand-held, portable device uses data related to the media content received via the receiver to cause command icons related to rendering of the media content to be defined and displayed in the touch screen display and to cause the transmitter to transmit one or more commands for controlling a functional operation related to rendering of the media content by the consumer electronic device in response to a user interaction with one or more of the command icons caused to displayed in the touch screen display.

Claims

1. A system, comprising;

a consumer electronic device adapted to render a media content; and

a hand-held, portable device having a touch screen display, a transmitter, a receiver, and a processing unit;

wherein the processing unit of the hand-held, portable device uses data related to the media content received via the receiver to cause command icons related to rendering of the media content to be defined and displayed in the touch screen display and to cause the transmitter to transmit one or more commands for controlling a functional operation related to rendering of the media content by the consumer electronic device in response to a user interaction with one or more of the command icons caused to displayed in the touch screen display.

2. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more commands for controlling a functional operation related to rendering of the media content caused to be transmitted by the transmitter comprises a command for navigating to a bookmarked segment of the media content.

3. The system as recited in claim 2, wherein one or more of the command icons present an image corresponding to a bookmarked segment of the media content.

4. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the transmitter is caused to transmit a macro command sequence in response to a user interaction with the one or more command icons caused to be displayed in the touch screen display.

5. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the data related to the media content comprises data representative of a menu pre-associated with the media content.

6. The system as recited in claim 5, wherein the media content comprises a video.

7. The system as recited in claim 6, wherein the media content comprises a video stored on a media readable by the consumer electronic device.

8. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the transmitter comprises an IR transmitter.

16. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 1, wherein the transmitter comprises an IR transmitter.

9. A hand-held, portable device, comprising:

a touch screen display, a transmitter, a receiver, and a processing unit;

wherein the processing unit of the hand-held, portable device uses data related to renderable media content by a consumer electronic device received via the receiver to cause command icons related to rendering of the media content to be defined and displayed in the touch screen display and to cause the transmitter to transmit one or more commands to a consumer electronic device for controlling a functional operation related to rendering of the media content by the consumer electronic device in response to a user interaction with one or more of the command icons caused to displayed in the touch screen display.

10. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 9, wherein the one or more commands for controlling a functional operation related to rendering of the media content caused to be transmitted by the transmitter comprises a command for navigating to a bookmarked segment of the media content.

11. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 10, wherein one or more of the command icons present an image corresponding to a bookmarked segment of the media content.

12. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 9, wherein the transmitter is caused to transmit a macro command sequence in response to a user interaction with the one or more command icons caused to be displayed in the touch screen display.

13. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 9, wherein the data related to the media content comprises data representative of a menu pre-associated with the media content.

14. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 13, wherein the media content comprises a video.

15. The hand-held, portable device as recited in claim 14, wherein the media content comprises a video stored on a media readable by the consumer electronic device.
