Abstract

The addition of nanoparticulate silica to sealants which are applied to the exposed edges of fire resistant laminated glazings provides an improved seal. Preferably the silica is present as an Ormosil dispersed in a polymerisable organic medium. Methods for applying such a medium to the edges of a glazing and polymerising it in situ are also claimed. The seals can be used to replace known metal tapes. The use of transparent seals provides a seal having an improved appearance.

23. A fire resistant laminated glazing comprising at least two panes of glass, at least one intumescent fire resistant interlayer having a seal covering the exposed edges of the interlayer or interlayers wherein the sealant comprises a nanoparticulate silica.

24. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the nanoparticulate silica is dispersed in a film forming medium.

25. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the sealant comprises an adhesive tape having nanoparticulate silica dispersed in the adhesive layer.

26. The glazing according to claim 24, wherein the film forming medium is a polymerisable liquid medium.

27. The glazing according to claim 26, wherein the film forming medium comprises a polymerisation initiator.

28. The glazing according to claim 25, wherein the film forming medium comprises a photopolymerisable monomer or oligomer and a photoinitiator.

29. The glazing according to claim 25, wherein the film forming medium is comprised of a medium selected from the group consisting of epoxy resins, urethanes, silicones, acrylates, methacrylates and their co-polymers.

30. The glazing according to claim 25, wherein the film forming medium comprises an oxygen scavenger.

31. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the nanoparticulate silica is an organically modified nanoparticulate silica.

32. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the seal comprises from 1% to 75% by weight of silica.

33. The glazing according to claim 32, wherein the seal comprises from 10% to 50% by weight of silica.

34. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the thickness of the seal above the exposed surface on the interlayer is less than 3 mm.

35. The glazing according to claim 23, wherein the appearance of the sealant is not significantly changed after exposure to the atmosphere at a temperature of 70°

C. for a period of 96 hours.

36. A method for scaling the edge of a fire resistant glazing which comprises at least two glass panes and at least one intumescent interlayer which method comprises applying a sealant comprising a nanoparticulate silica to the exposed edges of the interlayer.

37. The method according to claim 36, wherein a dispersion of a nanoparticulate silica in a film forming medium is applied to the exposed edges of the interlayer.

38. The method according to claim 36, wherein the film forming medium is a polymerisable medium.

39. The method according to claim 38, wherein the polymerisable medium is a photopolymerisable medium.

40. The method according to claim 38, wherein the sealant comprises a photopolymerisation initiator.

41. The method according to claim 36, wherein the sealant comprises an oxygen scavenger.

42. The method according to claim 36, wherein a film of the dispersion is applied to the exposed edges of the interlayer and the film is polymerised by UV irradiation.

43. The method according to claim 42, wherein the polymerisation is carried out in an inert atmosphere.

44. The method according to claim 36, wherein the desired thickness of seal is obtained by repeated application of the sealant.
