Abstract

A system for providing guidance information to a driver of a vehicle. In one implementation, the system includes an image capture device and an object sensor attached to the vehicle. The image capture device acquires an image of the vicinity of the vehicle. The object sensor is configured to detect an object near the vehicle. A processing unit processes the acquired image from the image capture device to produce an output image. The processing of the acquired image is based on information obtained from the object sensor. An image display unit is connected to the processing unit and displays the output image produced by the central processing unit.

Claims

1. A system for providing guidance information to a driver of a vehicle, comprising:

an image capture device configured to acquire an image of the vicinity of the vehicle;

an object sensor configured to detect an object near the vehicle;

a processing unit connected to the image capture device and to the object sensor, the processing unit configured to process the acquired image from the image capture device to produce an output image, the processing of the acquired image being based on information obtained from the object sensor; and

an image display unit connected to the processing unit and configured to display the output image produced by the processing unit.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein producing an output image comprises producing a simulated image and combining the simulated image with the acquired image to produce the output image.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the simulated image is produced by orthogonally projecting the acquired image.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing of the acquired images by the central processing unit is performed continuously based on the information obtained from the object sensor.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein one or both lateral portions of the acquired image are increased in size to produce the output image.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein one or both lateral portions of the acquired image are orthogonally projected to produce the output image.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein a subregion of the acquired image is enlarged to produce the output image.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the enlarged subregion is combined with the acquired image to produce the output image.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the image capture device is attached to the rear of the vehicle and includes a wide-angle lens.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the object sensor comprises an ultrasonic-based object sensor.

11. A method of providing guidance information to a driver of a vehicle, comprising:

obtaining an acquired image from an image capture device attached to the vehicle;

detecting an object near the vehicle using an object sensor attached to the vehicle;

processing the acquired image using a central processing unit associated with the vehicle to produce an output image, wherein processing of the acquired image is based on information obtained from the object sensor; and

displaying the output image produced by the central processing unit on an image display unit mounted in the vehicle.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein producing an output image comprises producing a simulated image and combining the simulated image with the acquired image to produce the output image.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein producing a simulated image comprises orthogonally projecting the acquired image.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the processing of the acquired images by the central processing unit is performed continuously based on the information obtained from the object sensor.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein processing the acquired image comprises increasing in size one or both lateral portions of the acquired image to produce the output image.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein processing the acquired image further comprises orthogonally projecting one or both lateral portions of the acquired image to produce the output image.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein processing the acquired image comprises enlarging a subregion of the acquired image to produce the output image.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein processing the acquired image further comprises combining the enlarged subregion with the acquired image to produce the output image.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the image capture device is attached to the rear of the vehicle and includes a wide-angle lens.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the object sensor comprises an ultrasonic-based object sensor.
