Abstract

A golf club head consisting of a striking face, a soleplate, a crown, and a skirt connecting the face, the soleplate and the crown. A flange is placed at a selected location on the periphery of the skirt. Incorporated into the flange is a hosel, positioned to be displaced from the club head, for receiving the shaft of the golf club. The area of the skirt covered by the flange has a length versus height ratio.

Claims

1. A golf club head comprising a striking face, a soleplate, a crown, and a skirt for connecting the face, the soleplate and the crown, and wherein the skirt includes a flange and a hosel, the hosel displaced from the crown of the club head by the flange.

2. The club head of claim 1 wherein the skirt has a periphery and the flange may be placed at a selected location about the periphery of the skirt.

3. The club head of claim 1 wherein the area of skirt covered by the flange has a length versus height ratio, and wherein the minimum ratio is about 1.25 to 1.

4. The club head of claim 1 wherein the minimum displacement of the hosel from the club head is about 1 mm.

5. The club head of claim 1 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the sole plate is about 2 mm.

6. The club head of claim 1 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the crown is about 2 mm.

7. The club head of claim 1 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the face is about 1 mm.

8. A golf club head comprising a striking face, a soleplate, a crown, and a skirt for connecting the face, the soleplate and the crown, wherein the skirt has a periphery, the periphery of the skirt for receiving a flange and a hosel, wherein the flange may be placed at a selected location about the periphery of the skirt;

and wherein the hosel is displaced from the crown of the club head by the flange.

9. The club head of claim 8 wherein the area of skirt covered by the flange has a length versus height ratio, and wherein the minimum ratio is about 1.25 to 1.

10. The club head of claim 8 wherein the minimum displacement of the hosel from the club head is about 1 mm.

11. The club head of claim 8 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the sole plate is about 2 mm.

12. The club head of claim 8 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the crown is about 2 mm.

13. The club head of claim 8 wherein the minimum displacement of the flange from the face is about 1 mm.

14. A method for making a golf club head, the method comprising the steps of

a. attaching a striking face, a soleplate, and a crown to a skirt for receiving a flange, the skirt having a periphery;

b. attaching the flange incorporating a hosel to the periphery of the skirt such that the hosel is displaced from the crown of the club head by the flange.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange and hosel on the periphery of the skirt includes the step of placing the flange at a selected location along the periphery of the skirt.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange on the periphery of the skirt includes selecting an area of skirt covered by the flange, wherein the area of skirt covered by the flange has a length versus height ratio, and wherein the minimum ratio is about 1.25 to 1.

17. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange and hosel on the periphery of the skirt includes placing the flange at a selected location such that the hosel is displaced from the club head a minimum distance of about 1 mm.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange on the periphery of the skirt includes placing the flange at a selected location such that the flange is displaced from the soleplate a minimum distance of about 2 mm.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange on the periphery of the skirt includes placing the flange at a selected location such that the flange is displaced from the crown a minimum distance of about 2 mm.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of attaching the flange on the periphery of the skirt includes placing the flange at a selected location such that the flange is displaced from the face a minimum distance of about 1 mm.
