Abstract

A handheld wireless display device, having at least SVGA-type resolution, includes a wireless interface, such as BluetoothrM, WiFi™, Wimax™, cellular or satellite, to allow the device to utilize a number of different hosts, such as a cell phone, personal computer, media player. The display may be monocular or binocular. Input mechanisms, such as switches, scroll wheels, touch pads, allow selection and navigation of menus, playing media files, setting volume and screen brightnesdcontrast, activating host remote controls or performing other commands. The device may include MIM diodes, Hall effect sensors, or other position transducers and/or accelerometers to detect lateral movements along and rotational gestures around the X, Y and Z axes as gesture inputs and movement queues. These commands may change pages, scroll up, down or across an enlarged screen image, such as for web browsing. An embedded software driver permits replicating a high-resolution screen display from a host PC.

Claims

1. A handheld wireless display device comprising:

a microdisplay element;

a wireless interface configured to provide connectivity to at least one host computing device to receive content including a video signal;

a video interface configured to display the video signal at the microdisplay element; and

at least one user input mechanism configured to control the content.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising an optical element configured to magnify an image produced by the microdisplay element to a user.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising a second microdisplay element in a binocular configuration.

4. The device of claim 3 further comprising an inter-pupillary distance (IPD) adjustment device.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the user input mechanism comprises at least one of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diodes, Hall effect sensors, accelerometers or other position transducers to detect at least one of lateral movements along and rotational gestures around the X, Y and Z axes, serving as gesture inputs or movement queues to control the content.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the user input mechanism is at least one of a switch, scroll wheel, or touch pad.

The device of claim 1 wherein, to control the content, the user input mechanism is further configured to select and navigate menus, play media files, adjust audio volume, adjust screen brightness or contrast, activate remote controls for the at least one host computing device, change pages, scroll up, down or across an enlarged page, or perform other commands on the device or the at least one host computing device.

The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless interface is further configured to support the device repeatedly polling the at least one host computing device at intervals for updated content at times the at least one host computing device is in a state of power of on, reduced-power, off, sleep or hibernate, and returning the at least one host computing device to the state of power.

The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless interface is configured to establish a first wireless communication path with a first host computing device of the at least one host computing device and a second wireless communication path with a second host computing device of the at least one host computing device.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless interface is a Bluetooth™

physical layer with a Bluetooth™

proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

11. The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless interface is further configured to support Microsoft Windows SideShow, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), or Virtual Network Computing (VNC) protocols.

12. A method for displaying content, including a video signal, at a handheld wireless display device, the method comprising:

receiving the content over a wireless interface configured to provide connectivity to at least one host computing device;

controlling the content via at least one user input mechanism;

displaying the video signal via a video interface at a microdisplay element.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the video signal is displayed such that an image produced by the microdisplay element is magnified to a user via an optical element.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising displaying a second video signal at a second microdisplay element in a binocular configuration with the first microdisplay element.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein an inter-pupillary distance (IPD) between the first and second microdisplay elements can be adjusted.

The method of claim 12 wherein the user input mechanism comprises at least one of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diodes, Hall effect sensors, accelerometers or other position transducers, the method further comprising detecting at least one of lateral movements along and rotational gestures around the X, Y and Z axes, serving as gesture inputs or movement queues to control the content.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the user input mechanism is at least one of a switch, scroll wheel, or touch pad.

18. The method of claim 12 wherein controlling the content includes selecting and navigating menus, playing media files, adjusting audio volume, adjusting screen brightness or contrast, activating remote controls for the host computing device, changing pages, scrolling up, down or across an enlarged page, or performing other commands on the handheld wireless display device or the at least one host computing device.

19. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

repeatedly polling the at least one host computing device at intervals for updated content at times the at least one host computing device is in a state of power of on, reduced-power, off, sleep or hibernate; and

returning the at least one host computing device to the state of power.

20. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

establishing a first wireless communication path over the wireless interface with a first host computing device of the at least one host computing device; and

establishing a second wireless communication path over the wireless interface with a second host computing device of the at least one host computing device.

21. The method of claim 12 wherein the wireless interface is a Bluetooth™

physical layer with a Bluetooth™

proxy, the method further comprising implementing a packet switching gateway.

22. The method of claim 12 further comprising controlling the content over the wireless interface using Microsoft Windows SideShow, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), or Virtual Network Computing (VNC) protocols.

23. A system for displaying content including a video signal received in a wireless manner, the system comprising:

a handheld wireless display device including a microdisplay element, a wireless interface configured to provide connectivity to at least one host computing device to receive content including a video signal, a video interface configured to display the video signal at the microdisplay element, and at least one user input mechanism configured to control the content; and

at least one host computing device, including a second wireless interface configured to establish a wireless connection between the at least one host computing device and the handheld wireless display device, the at least one host computing device configured to provide content to the handheld wireless display device.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the handheld wireless display device further includes an optical element configured to magnify an image produced by the microdisplay element to a user.

25. The system of claim 23 wherein the handheld wireless display device further includes a second microdisplay element in a binocular configuration.

26. The system of claim 25 wherein the handheld wireless display device further includes an inter-pupillary distance (IPD) adjustment device.

27. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second wireless interfaces are further configured to support the handheld wireless display device repeatedly polling the at least one host computing device at intervals for updated content at times the at least one host computing device is in a state of power of on, reduced-power, off, sleep or hibernate, and returning the at least one host computing device to the state of power.

28. The system of claim 23 wherein the first wireless interface of the handheld wireless display device is configured to establish a first wireless communication path with a first host computing device of the at least one host computing device and a second wireless communication path with a second host computing device of the at least one host computing device.

29. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second wireless interfaces are a Bluetooth™

physical layer with a Bluetooth™

proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

30. A method of requesting updated content from at least one host computing device, the method comprising:

transmitting a first command to the at least one host computing device in a first power state that causes the at least one host computing device to enter a second power state;

requesting updated content from the at least one host computing device while the at least one host computing device is in the second power state; and

receiving updated content from the at least one host computing device;

31. The method of claim 30 further comprising transmitting a second command to the at least one host computing device in the second power state that causes the at least one host computing device to enter a third power state.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein the third power state is the same as the first power state.

33. The method of claim 30 wherein the first command causes the at least one host computing device to call a low-level function to enter the second power state.

34. The method of claim 30 wherein the second command causes the at least one host computing device to call a system-level function to enter the third power state.

35. The method of claim 30 wherein the first power state is on, reduced-power, off, sleep or hibernate.

36. The method of claim 30 wherein the second power state is on.

37. A system for updating content comprising:

at least one host computing device; and

a remote device configured to transmit a first command to the at least one host computing device in a first power state that causes the at least one host computing device to enter a second power state, request updated content from the at least one host computing device in the second power state, and receive updated content from the at least one host computing device.

38. The system of claim 37 wherein the remote device is further configured to transmit a second command to the at least one host computing device in the second power state that causes the host computing device to enter a third power state.

39. The system of claim 38 wherein the third power state is the same as the first power state.

40. The system of claim 37 wherein the first command causes the at least one host computing device to call a low-level function to enter the second power state.

41. The system of claim 37 wherein the second command causes the at least one host computing device to call a system-level function to enter the third power state.

42. The system of claim 37 wherein the first power state is on, reduced-power, off, sleep or hibernate.

43. The system of claim 37 wherein the second power state is on.
