Abstract

Methods and systems for selecting and customizing an advertisement for a known user are disclosed. The advertisement is customized responsive to social distance between the user and members of the user'"'"'s social network.

Claims

1. A method implemented on a server, comprising:

receiving a request by said server for an advertisement to be presented to a known user;

customizing by said server said advertisement responsive to one or more social distances between said known user and one or more members of said known user'"'"'s social network, wherein said customizing includes selecting a member information associated with a member of said known user'"'"'s social network, and further wherein said member information is visibly associated with said advertisement when presented to said known user; and

sending by said server said advertisement to be presented to said known user.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said request is from said, known user'"'"'s browser.

3. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein said request is responsive to an HTML directive sent to said known user'"'"'s browser by an advertising website.

4. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser is instantiated by one or more of a group consisting of a web browser, a mobile device, a vehicle navigation console, an addressable television receiver, a billboard, and an in-store display.

A method as recited in claim 2, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser identifies said known user by one or more of a group consisting of a browser cookie, a wireless connection involving said known user'"'"'s mobile device, and address information of a television receiver associated with said known user.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said sending is to said known user'"'"'s browser.

7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser combines said advertisement with content from an advertising website.

8. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser is instantiated by one or more of a group consisting of a web browser, a mobile device, a vehicle navigation console, an addressable television receiver, a billboard, and an in-store display.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, customizing further includes selecting review information that is visibly associated with said advertisement when presented to said known user.

10. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein said advertisement is associated with a subject, and further wherein said review information is associated with said subject.

11. A method as recited in claim 10, wherein said review information is one or more of a group consisting of a number of reviews available about said subject, average rating of reviews about said subject, and an excerpt of a review written by said member.

12. A method as recited in claim 1, customizing further includes selecting said advertisement from a plurality of advertisements responsive to said one or more social distances.

13. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said member information is one or more of a group consisting of a picture of said member, a name of said member, and a relationship description between said member and said known user.

14. A method as recited in claim 13, wherein said relationship description is one or more of a group consisting of friend, friend of friend, co-worker, spouse, alumni, and co-members of a group.

A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said advertisement comprises one or more of a group consisting of a compliance seal, a banner advertisement, a pay-per-click advertisement, a text advertisement, a classified advertisement, an auction, a television advertisement, an in-store advertisement, and a billboard advertisement.

16. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said selecting is subject to privacy constraints.

17. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said sending occurs over a plurality of channels.

18. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said sending is metered.

19. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein an endorsement of said advertisement by said member is visibly associated with said member information.

20. An apparatus, comprising:

a database containing user information, information relating to members of each user'"'"'s social network, and advertisements; and

a server that in response to receiving a request for an advertisement to be presented to a known user, customizes said advertisement responsive to one or more social distances between said known user and one or more members of said known user'"'"'s social network, and sends said customized advertisement to be presented to said known user, wherein said customizing includes selecting a member information from said database associated with a member of said known user'"'"'s social network, and further wherein said member information is visibly associated with said advertisement when presented to said known user.

21. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said request is from said known user'"'"'s browser.

22. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said request is responsive to an HTML directive sent to said known user'"'"'s browser by an advertising website.

23. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser is instantiated by one or more of a group consisting of a web browser, a mobile device, a vehicle navigation console, an addressable television receiver, a billboard, and an in-store display.

An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser identifies said known user by one or more of a group consisting of a browser cookie, a wireless connection involving said known user'"'"'s mobile device, and address information of a television receiver associated with said known user.

25. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said server sends said customized advertisement to said known user'"'"'s browser.

26. An apparatus as recited in claim 25, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser combines said customized advertisement with content from an advertising website.

27. An apparatus as recited in claim 25, wherein said known user'"'"'s browser is instantiated by one or more of a group consisting of a web browser, a mobile device, a vehicle navigation console, an addressable television receiver, a billboard, and an in-store display.

28. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said database further contains reviews, and said server further selects review information that is visibly associated with said customized advertisement when presented to said known user.

29. An apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein said advertisement is associated with a subject, and further wherein said review information is associated with said subject.

30. An apparatus as recited in claim 29, wherein said review information is one or more of a group consisting of a number of reviews available about said subject, average rating of reviews about said subject, and an excerpt of a review written by said member.

31. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said server further selects said advertisement from a plurality of advertisements contained in said database responsive to said one or more social distances.

32. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said member information is one or more of a group consisting of a picture of said member, a name of said member, and a relationship description between said member and said known user.

33. An apparatus as recited in claim 32, wherein said relationship description is one or more of a group consisting of friend, friend of friend, co-worker, spouse, alumni, and co-members of a group.

An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said advertisement comprises one or more of a group consisting of a compliance seal, a banner advertisement, a pay-per-click advertisement, a text advertisement, a classified advertisement, an auction, a television advertisement, an in-store advertisement, and a billboard advertisement.

35. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein selecting is subject to privacy constraints.

36. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein sending occurs over a plurality of channels.

37. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein sending is metered.

38. An apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said database further contains endorsement information, and further wherein an endorsement of said advertisement by said member is visibly associated with said member information.

39. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving a request for an advertisement to be presented to a known user;

means for customizing said advertisement responsive to one or more social distances between said known user and one or more members of said known user'"'"'s social network, wherein said means for customizing selects a member information associated with a member of said known user'"'"'s social network, and further wherein said member information is visibly associated with said advertisement when presented to said known user; and

means for sending said advertisement to be presented to said known user.

40. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein said means for customizing further selects review information that is visibly associated with said advertisement when presented to said known user.

41. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein said means for customizing further selects said advertisement from a plurality of advertisements responsive to said one or more social distances.
