Abstract

A method and apparatus for sharing personal media using a digital recorder transfers multimedia content via email to a digital video recorder.

Claims

1. A method for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), comprising:

receiving, by a multimedia device among a plurality of multimedia devices in communication with a DVR via a local network, a user command to play multimedia content stored on the DVR;

in response to the user command, retrieving, at the multimedia device, the multimedia content stored on the DVR, the DVR receiving at least a portion of a plurality of stored multimedia content via an input tuner;

subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, performing one or more of;

playing, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content to a user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to playing the multimedia content to the user;

or

sending, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content for display to the user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to sending the multimedia content for display to the user.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the multimedia content is not stored at the multimedia device.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device sends the multimedia content for display to the user.

4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device plays the multimedia content to the user.

5. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the multimedia device decodes and plays the multimedia content as the multimedia content is received.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the user specifies a position within the multimedia content from which to start the retrieval of the multimedia content stored on the DVR.

7. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

retrieving, by the multimedia device, a list of multimedia content stored on the DVR;

displaying, by the multimedia device, the list to the user.

8. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the multimedia device stores at least a portion of the multimedia content on at least one storage device before displaying the multimedia content to the user.

10. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the multimedia device, metadata relating to the multimedia content from the DVR.

11. A non-transitory computer readable medium, comprising a sequence of instructions, which when executed by one or more processors, cause:

receiving, by a multimedia device among a plurality of multimedia devices in communication with a DVR via a local network, a user command to play multimedia content stored on the DVR;

in response to the user command, retrieving, at the multimedia device, the multimedia content stored on the DVR, the DVR receiving at least a portion of a plurality of stored multimedia content via an input tuner;

subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, performing one or more of;

playing, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content to a user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to playing the multimedia content to the user;

or

sending, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content for display to the user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to sending the multimedia content for display to the user.

12. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein the multimedia content is not stored at the multimedia device.

13. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device sends the multimedia content for display to the user.

14. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device plays the multimedia content to the user.

15. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein the multimedia device decodes and plays the multimedia content as the multimedia content is received.

16. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein the user specifies a position within the multimedia content from which to start the retrieval of the multimedia content stored on the DVR.

17. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, further comprising instructions for:

retrieving, by the multimedia device, a list of multimedia content stored on the DVR;

displaying, by the multimedia device, the list to the user.

18. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

19. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, wherein the multimedia device stores at least a portion of the multimedia content on at least one storage device before displaying the multimedia content to the user.

20. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 11, further comprising instructions for:

receiving, by the multimedia device, metadata relating to the multimedia content from the DVR.

21. An apparatus comprising one or more devices configured to cause:

receiving, by a multimedia device among a plurality of multimedia devices in communication with a DVR via a local network, a user command to play multimedia content stored on the DVR;

in response to the user command, retrieving, at the multimedia device, the multimedia content stored on the DVR, the DVR receiving at least a portion of a plurality of stored multimedia content via an input tuner;

subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, performing one or more of;

playing, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content to a user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to playing the multimedia content to the user;

or

sending, by the multimedia device, the multimedia content for display to the user, the multimedia device processing the multimedia content prior to sending the multimedia content for display to the user.

22. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein the multimedia content is not stored at the multimedia device.

23. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device sends the multimedia content for display to the user.

24. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein subsequent to retrieving the multimedia content, the multimedia device plays the multimedia content to the user.

25. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein the multimedia device decodes and plays the multimedia content as the multimedia content is received.

26. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein the user specifies a position within the multimedia content from which to start the retrieval of the multimedia content stored on the DVR.

27. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, further comprising:

retrieving, by the multimedia device, a list of multimedia content stored on the DVR;

displaying, by the multimedia device, the list to the user.

28. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

29. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein the multimedia device stores at least a portion of the multimedia content on at least one storage device before displaying the multimedia content to the user.

30. An apparatus as recited in claim 21, further comprising:

receiving, by the multimedia device, metadata relating to the multimedia content from the DVR.
