Abstract

A method and system for processing buffer status reports (BSRs) such that when BSR triggering is performed, the size(s) of the necessary sub-header(s) are also to be considered together in addition to the BSR size. The steps of checking whether any padding region is available in a MAC PDU that was constructed, comparing the number of padding bits with the size of the BSR plus its sub-header, and if the number of padding bits is larger than the size of the BSR plus its sub-header, triggering BSR are performed. Doing so allows the sub-header(s) to be inserted or included into the MAC PDU or transport block (TB) or other type of data unit.

Claims

1. A method of constructing a data unit to include control information, the method comprising:

receiving one or more service data units (SDUs) from an upper layer;

generating a protocol data unit (PDU) using the received one or more SDUs,

wherein the PDU includes a header and a control element; and

transmitting the generated PDU to a receiving side,

wherein the header includes one or more sub-headers, each sub-header corresponds to either the SDU, the control element or a padding,

wherein the control element is placed before the SDU, and

wherein the control element includes control information if a number of available padding bits of the PDU is equal to or larger than a size of the control information plus its sub-header.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the control information is at least one of scheduling information, power control information, and a buffer status report (BSR).

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the PDU is a medium access control (MAC) PDU and the SDUs are MAC SDUs.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the header is a medium access control (MAC) PDU header, the one or more sub-headers are MAC PDU sub-headers, and the control element is a MAC control element (CE).

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the sub-header includes a specific field indicating that the control information is included in the data unit.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the specific field is a logical channel identification (LCID) field indicting that a buffer status report (BSR) is included in the data unit.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the LCID field contains either a first value for a short buffer status report, a second value for a long buffer status report and a third value for a truncated BSR.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the data unit includes a short BSR having the logical channel group (LCG) identification field of 2 bits and a buffer size of 6 bits.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the logical channel identification (LCID) field has 5 bits.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the LCID field identifies the logical channel instance of the corresponding MAC SDU or the type of the corresponding MAC control element or padding for the DL-SCH and UL-SCH respectively.

11. A mobile communication apparatus, comprising:

a protocol entity adapted to receive one or more service data units (SDUs) from an upper layer, to generate a protocol data unit (PDU) using the received one or more SDUs,

wherein the PDU includes a header and a control element; and

to transmit the generated PDU to a receiving side,

wherein the header includes one or more sub-headers, each sub-header corresponds to either the SDU, the control element or a padding, wherein the control element is placed before the SDU, and

wherein the control element includes control information if a number of available padding bits of the PDU is equal to or larger than a size of the control information plus its sub-header.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control information is at least one of scheduling information, power control information, and a buffer status report (BSR).

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the PDU is a medium access control (MAC) PDU and the SDUs are MAC SDUs.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the header is a medium access control (MAC) PDU header, the one or more sub-headers are MAC PDU subheaders, and the control element is a MAC control element (CE).

15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the sub-header includes a specific field indicating that the control information is included in the data unit.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the specific field is a logical channel identification (LCID) field indicting that a buffer status report (BSR) is included in the data unit.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the LCID field contains either a first value for a short buffer status report, a second value for a long buffer status report and a third value for a truncated BSR.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the data unit includes a short BSR having the logical channel group (LCG) identification field of 2 bits and a buffer sire of 6 bits.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the logical channel identification (LCID) field has 5 bits.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the LCID field identifies the logical channel instance of the corresponding MAC SDU or the type of the corresponding MAC control element or padding for the DL-SCH and UL-SCH respectively.
