Abstract

A method of programming an infusion device includes receiving an infusion rate for a time period, wherein the time period overlaps with a predefined start of a predefined period of the infusion device. The time period is converted into (1) a first converted time period extending from a start of the time period to the predefined start of the predefined period, and (2) a second converted time period extending from the predefined start of the predefined period to an end of the time period. The infusion device is programmed with the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period.

Claims

1. A method of programming an infusion device, comprising:

receiving an infusion rate for a time period, wherein the time period overlaps with a predefined start of a predefined period of the infusion device;

converting the time period into (1) a first converted time period extending from a start of the time period to the predefined start of the predefined period, and (2) a second converted time period extending from the predefined start of the predefined period to an end of the time period; and

programming the infusion device with the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period.

2. The method of claim 1, further including:

receiving a second infusion rate for a second time period that does not overlap with the predefined start of the predefined period of the infusion device; and

programming the infusion device with the second infusion rate for the second time period.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the predefined period of the infusion device is 24 hours.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the infusion rate is a basal rate.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the infusion device is an insulin infusion pump.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the method is implemented on the infusion device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the method is implemented on a programmer/controller of the infusion device.

8. The method of claim 1, further including:

transmitting the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period to the infusion device to program the infusion device.

9. An article of manufacture containing code for programming an infusion device, comprising a computer-usable medium including at least one embedded computer program that is capable of causing at least one computer to perform:

receiving an infusion rate for a time period, wherein the time period overlaps with a predefined start of a predefined period of the infusion device;

converting the time period into (1) a first converted time period extending from a start of the time period to the predefined start of the predefined period, and (2) a second converted time period extending from the predefined start of the predefined period to an end of the time period; and

programming the infusion device with the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period.

10. The article of claim 9, wherein the at least one embedded computer program is capable of causing the at least one computer to further perform:

receiving a second infusion rate for a second time period that does not overlap with the predefined start of the predefined period of the infusion device; and

programming the infusion device with the second infusion rate for the second time period.

11. The article of claim 9, wherein the predefined period of the infusion device is 24 hours.

12. The article of claim 9, wherein the infusion rate is a basal rate.

13. The article of claim 9, wherein the infusion device is an insulin infusion pump.

14. The article of claim 9, wherein the article is the infusion device.

15. The article of claim 9, wherein the article is a programmer/controller of the infusion device.

16. The article of claim 9, wherein the at least one embedded computer program is capable of causing the at least one computer to further perform:

transmitting the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period to the infusion device to program the infusion device.

17. A programmer/controller for an infusion device, comprising:

a user interface to receive an infusion rate for a time period from a user, wherein the time period overlaps with a predefined start of a predefined period of the infusion device;

a processor operatively coupled to the user interface to convert the time period into (1) a first converted time period extending from a start of the time period to the predefined start of the predefined period, and (2) a second converted time period extending from the predefined start of the predefined period to an end of the time period, and to program the infusion device with the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period; and

a display screen operatively coupled to the processor to display infusion rate information to the user.

18. The programmer/controller of claim 17, wherein the programmer/controller is embedded within the infusion device.

19. The programmer/controller of claim 17, further including:

a transmitter operatively coupled to the processor to transmit the infusion rate for the first converted time period and the second converted time period to the infusion device to program the infusion device.

20. The programmer/controller of claim 17, wherein the predefined period of the infusion device is 24 hours.
