Abstract

A system and method provide single frequency, dual cell high-speed downlink packet access to a UMTS telecommunications system. A first downlink channel is provided from a first sector, and a second downlink channel is provided from a second sector, wherein the first downlink channel and the second downlink channel are in substantially the same carrier frequency. Feedback information such as a CQI and/or a PCI is provided on an uplink channel to facilitate adaptation of the respective downlink channels. Here, the uplink carrier may be in the same or a different carrier frequency than that of the downlink channels.

Claims

1. A method for communication in a wireless network, comprising:

providing information on a first downlink channel from a first sector, and information on a second downlink channel from a second sector, wherein the first downlink channel and the second downlink channel are each carried on a first carrier frequency;

receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel at the first sector; and

receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel at the second sector.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are each provided on a first uplink carrier frequency.

The method of claim 2, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are jointly encoded on an uplink channel on the first uplink carrier frequency.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels is transmitted on a high speed dedicated physical control channel.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels comprises at least one of a CQI or a PCI.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

adapting transmissions on the first downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel; and

adapting transmissions on the second downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one high speed dedicated physical control channel is utilized on an uplink for each of the first and second sectors, and wherein sub-frame timing of the control channel in each of the respective sectors is substantially asynchronous relative to one another.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving scheduling information on one or more downlink channels corresponding to each of the first and second sectors.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the receiving of the scheduling information comprises receiving information on the first downlink channel, wherein the first sector is a master sector that provides scheduling information for the master sector and at least one other sector.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein interference from the first sector is reduced when listening for the second downlink channel from the second sector by applying intercell interference cancellation.

11. A computer program product, comprising:

a computer-readable medium comprising;

code for providing information on a first downlink channel from a first sector, and information on a second downlink channel from a second sector, wherein the first downlink channel and the second downlink channel are carried on a first carrier frequency;

code for receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel at the first sector; and

code for receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel at the second sector.

12. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are each provided on a first uplink carrier frequency.

13. The computer program product of claim 12, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are jointly encoded on an uplink channel on the first uplink carrier frequency.

14. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels is transmitted on a high speed dedicated physical control channel.

15. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels comprises at least one of a CQI or a PCI.

16. The computer program product of claim 11, further comprising:

code for adapting transmissions on the first downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel; and

code for adapting transmissions on the second downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel.

17. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein at least one high speed dedicated physical control channel is utilized on an uplink for each of the first and second sectors, and wherein sub-frame timing of the control channel in each of the respective sectors is substantially asynchronous relative to one another.

18. The computer program product of claim 11, further comprising code for receiving scheduling information on one or more downlink channels corresponding to each of the first and second sectors.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the code for receiving of the scheduling information comprises code for receiving information on the first downlink channel, wherein the first sector is a master sector that provides scheduling information for the master sector and at least one other sector.

20. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein interference from the first sector is reduced when listening for the second downlink channel from the second sector by applying intercell interference cancellation.

21. An apparatus for high speed downlink packet access, comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory coupled to the at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor is configured to;

provide information on a first downlink channel from a first sector, and information on a second downlink channel from a second sector, wherein the first downlink channel and the second downlink channel are carried on a first carrier frequency;

receive feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel at the first sector; and

receive feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel at the second sector.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are each provided on a first uplink carrier frequency.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are jointly encoded on an uplink channel on the first uplink carrier frequency.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels is transmitted on a high speed dedicated physical control channel.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels comprises at least one of a CQI or a PCI.

26. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

adapt transmissions on the first downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel; and

adapt transmissions on the second downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel.

27. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein at least one high speed dedicated physical control channel is utilized on an uplink for each of the first and second sectors, and wherein sub-frame timing of the control channel in each of the respective sectors is substantially asynchronous relative to one another.

28. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive scheduling information on one or more downlink channels corresponding to each of the first and second sectors.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the receiving of the scheduling information comprises receiving information on the first downlink channel, wherein the first sector is a master sector that provides scheduling information for the master sector and at least one other sector.

30. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein interference from the first sector is reduced when listening for the second downlink channel from the second sector by applying intercell interference cancellation.

31. An apparatus operable in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

means for providing information on a first downlink channel from a first sector, and information on a second downlink channel from a second sector, wherein the first downlink channel and the second downlink channel are carried on a first carrier frequency;

means for receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel at the first sector; and

means for receiving feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel at the second sector.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are each provided on a first uplink carrier frequency.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel and the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel are jointly encoded on an uplink channel on the first uplink carrier frequency.

34. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels is transmitted on a high speed dedicated physical control channel.

35. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the feedback information corresponding to each of the first and second downlink channels comprises at least one of a CQI or a PCI.

36. The apparatus of claim 31, further comprising:

adapting transmissions on the first downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the first downlink channel; and

adapting transmissions on the second downlink channel in accordance with the feedback information corresponding to the downlink channel state for the second downlink channel.

37. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein at least one high speed dedicated physical control channel is utilized on an uplink for each of the first and second sectors, and wherein sub-frame timing of the control channel in each of the respective sectors is substantially asynchronous relative to one another.

38. The apparatus of claim 31, further comprising receiving scheduling information on one or more downlink channels corresponding to each of the first and second sectors.

39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein the receiving of the scheduling information comprises receiving information on the first downlink channel, wherein the first sector is a master sector that provides scheduling information for the master sector and at least one other sector.

40. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein interference from the first sector is reduced when listening for the second downlink channel from the second sector by applying intercell interference cancellation.
