Abstract

A method of detecting an occlusion for an infusion therapy in one embodiment includes: monitoring an output signal from a flowrate sensor for a pulsatile fluid flow having a frequency range, the pulsatile flow being through a fluid pathway to a patient; acquiring a data set that includes the output signal as a function of time; filtering the data set with a noise rejection filter to produce a filtered data set; performing spectra analysis on the filtered data set to determine a strength of the output signal in a frequency domain; calculating a signal strength for the frequency range using the strength of the output signal in the frequency domain; and comparing the signal strength of the range to at least one threshold level to determine if an occlusion is present during the infusion therapy.

Claims

1. A method of detecting an occlusion for an infusion therapy comprising:

monitoring an output signal from a flowrate sensor for a pulsatile fluid flow having a frequency range, the pulsatile flow being through a fluid pathway to a patient;

acquiring a data set that includes the output signal as a function of time;

filtering the data set with a noise rejection filter to produce a filtered data set;

performing spectra analysis on the filtered data set to determine a strength of the output signal in a frequency domain;

calculating a signal strength for the frequency range using the strength of the output signal in the frequency domain; and

comparing the signal strength of the range to at least one threshold level to determine if an occlusion is present during the infusion therapy.

2. The method of claim 1, which includes calculating the signal strength of the range of frequency by integrating power spectra in a frequency domain for the frequency range and computing an energy metric.

3. The method of claim 1, which includes filtering the date set with a low-pass or a high-pass frequency filter.

4. The method of claim 1, which includes performing the spectra analysis by performing Fast Fourier Transform on the filtered data set.

5. The method of claim 1, which includes activating an alarm if the signal strength of the range of frequency is above the threshold level.

6. The method of claim 1, which includes activating an alarm if the signal strength of the range of frequency is below the threshold level.

7. The method of claim 1, which includes activating an alarm if the signal strength is above an upper threshold level or below a lower threshold level.

8. A system configured to perform the method of claim 1.

9. The system of claim 8, which includes at least one of a processing and memory to perform the steps of claim 1.

10. A method of detecting an occlusion for an infusion therapy comprising:

obtaining a baseline output from a flowrate sensor;

filtering the baseline output to form a filtered baseline output;

determining a threshold value from the filtered baseline output;

monitoring a therapy output of the flowrate sensor during the infusion therapy;

filtering the therapy output to produce a filtered therapy output; and

comparing the filtered therapy output to the threshold value and determining the occlusion based on the comparison.

11. The method of claim 10, which includes determining the occlusion if the filtered therapy output falls below the threshold value.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein monitoring the therapy output includes taking multiple sensor readings over multiple time intervals.

13. The method of claim 10, which includes obtaining the baseline output of the sensor before the infusion therapy begins.

14. The method of claim 10, which includes obtaining the baseline output of the sensor during a priming of the infusion therapy.

15. The method of claim 10, which includes obtaining the baseline output of the sensor as the infusion therapy begins.

16. The method of claim 10, which includes obtaining the baseline output of the sensor over a set number of cycles of a pump performing the infusion therapy.

17. The method of claim 10, which includes determining the threshold value based on at least one of:

(i) a baseline average of the filtered baseline output and (ii) a standard deviation of the filtered baseline output.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein at least one of the filtering of the baseline output and the filtering of the therapy output includes using a filter of a type selected from the group consisting of:

a backward averaging filter, a ten second backward averaging filter, a central averaging filter, a weighted averaging filter, and a predictor-corrector averaging filter.

19. A system configured to perform the method of claim 10.
