Abstract

An implantable device, such as a pacer, defibrillator, or other cardiac rhythm management device, can include one or more MRI Safe components. In an example, the implantable device includes a battery including a first electrode and a second electrode separate from the first electrode. The second electrode includes a first surface and a second surface. The second electrode includes a slot through the second electrode from the first surface toward the second surface. The slot extends from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode. The slot is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device battery comprising:

a first electrode; and

a second electrode separate from the first electrode, the second electrode including a first surface and a second surface, the second electrode including a high resistance section in the second electrode extending from the first surface toward the second surface, the high resistance section extending from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode, wherein the high resistance section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode.

2. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the first electrode includes a cathode and the second electrode includes an anode.

3. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second electrode is substantially planar.

4. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second electrode includes:

a first layer forming the first surface of the second electrode; and

a second layer abutting the first layer, the second layer forming the second surface of the second electrode.

5. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the first layer includes lithium.

6. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the second layer includes a conductive material.

7. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the second layer includes stainless steel.

8. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the second layer includes nickel.

9. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the high resistance section includes a slot extending through at least the first layer.

10. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the high resistance section includes a slot extending through the first and second layers.

11. The implantable medical device battery of claim 4, wherein the second electrode includes a third layer abutting the second layer, the second layer being disposed between the first and third layers.

12. The implantable medical device battery of claim 11, wherein the high resistance section includes a slot extending through the first layer, the second electrode including another slot extending through the third layer.

13. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the high resistance section includes more than one slot extending through the second electrode.

14. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second electrode includes an insulating material within the high resistance section, the high resistance section including a slot, the insulating material configured to maintain separation of the second electrode along a length of the slot.

15. The implantable medical device battery of claim 14, wherein the second electrode includes:

a first layer forming the first surface of the second electrode; and

a second layer abutting the first layer, the second layer forming the second surface of the second electrode, wherein the slot extends through at least the first layer, the second layer including a tab extending within the slot of the first layer, the tab including the insulating material.

16. The implantable medical device battery of claim 14, wherein the second electrode includes:

a first layer forming the first surface of the second electrode; and

a second layer abutting the first layer, the second layer forming the second surface of the second electrode, wherein the slot extends through at least the first layer, the second layer including a void corresponding to the slot.

17. The implantable medical device battery of claim 16, wherein the insulating material includes a tab extending through the void of the second layer and into the slot.

18. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the first electrode includes a high resistance section extending from a perimeter of the first electrode to an interior of the first electrode, wherein the high resistance section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the first electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the first electrode.

19. A method comprising:

stacking a first electrode with a second electrode, wherein the second electrode is separate from the first electrode, the second electrode including a first surface and a second surface, the second electrode including a high resistance section in the second electrode extending from the first surface toward the second surface, the high resistance section extending from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode, wherein the high resistance section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode.

20. The method of claim 19, comprising segmenting the second electrode to form the high resistance section, the high resistance section including a slot.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein segmenting includes die pressing the second electrode to form the high resistance section, the high resistance section including a slot.

22. The method of claim 21, comprising inserting an insulating material within the slot of the second electrode.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein segmenting includes pressing a first layer together with a second layer, the second layer including a tab extending from a substantially planar surface of the second layer.

24. The method of claim 19, comprising segmenting the first electrode to form a high resistance section extending from a perimeter of the first electrode to an interior of the first electrode, wherein the high resistance section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the first electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the first electrode.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein segmenting includes die pressing the first electrode to form the high resistance section, the high resistance section including a slot.
