Abstract

Systems, methods, apparatus, means and computer program code for operating a mobile device and an insurance processing system are provide which include receiving, from a mobile device, sensor data collected from at least a first sensor of the mobile device, determining, based at least in part on the sensor data, that an activity associated with an insured is not covered by a plurality of insurance coverage rules, and transmitting, to the mobile device, information indicating that an activity is not covered by a plurality of insurance coverage rules.

Claims

1. An insurance system, comprising:

a data storage device for storing data defining a plurality of insurance policies and a plurality of insurance coverage rules associated with one or more of said insurance policies, at least one of said insurance policies associated with a mobile insurance application operated by an insured;

a computer processor for executing program instructions and for retrieving said data defining a plurality of insurance policies from the data storage device;

a memory, coupled to the computer processor, for storing program instructions for execution by the computer processor to

receive, from a mobile device associated with said mobile insurance application, sensor data collected from at least a first sensor of said mobile device;

determine, based at least in part on said sensor data, that an activity associated with said insured is not covered by said plurality of insurance coverage rules; and

transmit, to said mobile device, information indicating that an activity is not covered by said plurality of insurance coverage rules.

2. The insurance system of claim 1, wherein said sensor data includes location data.

The insurance system of claim 2, wherein said program instructions for execution by the computer processor to determine whether an activity associated with said insured is not covered by said plurality of insurance coverage rules includes program instructions to compare said location data with at least a first geographical limitation of said plurality of insurance coverage rules.

The insurance system of claim 3, wherein said at least one of said insurance policies is an automobile policy, and said program instructions for execution by the computer processor to transmit information indicating that an activity is not covered by said plurality of insurance coverage rules includes information notifying said insured that their location is a location not covered by said insurance policy.

5. The insurance system of claim 4, further comprising program instructions for execution by the computer processor to:

receive a request from said mobile device to obtain additional coverage for said location; and

transmit, to said mobile device, terms and conditions for said additional coverage.

The insurance system of claim 3, wherein said at least one of said insurance policies is a commercial lines policy, and said program instructions for execution by the computer processor to transmit information indicating that an activity is not covered by said plurality of insurance coverage rules includes information notifying said insured that their location is a location not covered by said insurance policy.

7. The insurance system of claim 6, further comprising program instructions for execution by the computer processor to:

receive information from said mobile device identifying the scope of an activity to be performed at said location;

receive a request from said mobile device to obtain additional coverage for said activity at said location; and

generate terms and conditions for said additional coverage based on said information identifying the scope of said activity.

8. The insurance system of claim 1, wherein said sensor data is collected under control of said mobile insurance application and transmitted to said insurance system under control of said mobile insurance application.

9. The insurance system of claim 1, wherein said sensor data is collected under control of said mobile insurance application on request by said insured.

10. An insurance processing system, comprising:

a communication system, for receiving an insurance request from a mobile device, the insurance request including a request regarding insurance coverage for an activity;

a proof of insurance engine, for processing said request regarding insurance coverage by comparing said activity with terms of at least one insurance policy; and

an application engine, for generating terms associated with a change to said at least one insurance policy in the event that said activity is not covered by said at least one insurance policy.

11. The insurance processing system of claim 10, wherein said request regarding insurance coverage for an activity is determined by said insurance processing system based on information automatically transmitted from said mobile device.

12. The insurance processing system of claim 10, wherein said request regarding insurance coverage for an activity is initiated by a user operating a mobile device.

13. The insurance processing system of claim 10, wherein said insurance request includes information identifying at least one of (i) an insured and (ii) an insurance policy.

14. The insurance processing system of claim 10, wherein said proof of insurance engine generates a proof of insurance in the event that said activity is covered by said at least one insurance policy.

15. The insurance processing system of claim 14, wherein said proof of insurance is transmitted to said mobile device.

16. The insurance processing system of claim 14, wherein said proof of insurance is transmitted to a second mobile device.

17. A portable wireless communication device, comprising:

a communication port;

a processor;

a memory;

and a program, wherein the program is stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the processor, the program including;

instructions for detecting a user action to request information regarding insurance coverage for an activity;

instructions for receiving information identifying said activity;

instructions for transmitting, to a remote insurance processing system, a request for information regarding insurance coverage for said activity, said request including information identifying said user, an insurance policy of said user, and said information identifying said activity; and

instructions for receiving a response from said remote insurance processing system.

18. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein said response from said remote insurance processing system includes information confirming that said activity is a covered activity under said insurance policy.

19. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein said response from said remote insurance processing system includes information indicating that said activity is not a covered activity under said insurance policy, the program further including:

instructions for receiving terms and conditions associated with additional coverage for said activity;

instructions for detecting a user action to accept said terms and conditions associated with additional coverage for said activity; and

instructions for transmitting said acceptance of said terms and conditions associated with additional coverage for said activity.

20. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, the program further including:

instructions for receiving an indication of a payment of funds from said remote insurance processing system associated with said insurance policy of said user; and

instructions for displaying information allowing a user to access said funds.

21. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein said response from said remote insurance processing system is based on a comparison of said information identifying said activity with coverage rules associated with said insurance policy of said user.

22. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein said insurance policy of said user is a personal lines policy, and said activity is automobile operation in a geographical area, wherein said information identifying said activity includes sensor data identifying a location of said portable wireless communication device.

23. The portable wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein said insurance policy of said user is a commercial lines policy, and said activity is a work location, wherein said information identifying said activity includes sensor data identifying a location of said portable wireless communication device and information identifying a scope of operations at said work location.
