Abstract

A wireless communication device declares one of a plurality of extended instant messaging states and transmits the declared states to a presence information server. Declared extended instant messaging states for destination devices are received, and an enhanced instant message based on declared extended instant messaging states is generated.

Claims

1. A method of operating a presence information server comprising:

receiving a set of interests from an interested host;

receiving presence information, the presence information being representative of a characteristic of mobile use of a wireless device;

determining if there is an overlap between the set of interests and the presence information; and

if an overlap exists, sharing information associated with the received presence information with the interested host.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is one of a mobility event, a user activity event, an interested proximity event, a communication event, or a voluntary event.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing the set of interests in a persistent store.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is a coupling of a user activity state with a contact proximity state and wherein the set of interests expresses an interest in a user of the wireless device.

5. The method of claim 8 further comprising alerting the interested host that the wireless device is located in a proximate city.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the presence information is received as a registration.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the presence information comprises privacy information.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the presence information comprises security information.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the interest information comprises privacy information.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the interest information comprises security information.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the interested host is associated with a merchant.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the interested host is associated with a shopping mall.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

if an overlap exists, enabling communication between the interested host and the wireless device.

17. The method of claim 17 wherein the presence information is derived using triangulation.

14. The method of claim 17 wherein the enabled communication is instant shopping.

15. The method of claim 17 wherein the enabled communication comprises assisting a user of the wireless device to find something they are looking for.

16. The method of claim 17 wherein the presence information is derived using GPS.

18. A computer readable medium having instructions comprising computer executable instructions embedded thereon for execution by a processor of a presence information server such that when executed, the processor:

receives a set of interests from an interested host;

receives presence information, the presence information being representative of a characteristic of mobile use of a wireless device;

determines if there is an overlap between the set of interests and the presence information; and

if an overlap exists, shares information associated with the received presence information with the interested host.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is one of a mobility event, a user activity event, an interested proximity event, a communication event, or a voluntary event.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 18 further comprising storing the set of interests in a persistent store.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is a coupling of a user activity state with a contact proximity state and wherein the set of interests expresses an interest in a user of the wireless device.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 21 further comprising alerting the interested host that the wireless device is located in a proximate city.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the presence information is received as a registration.

24. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the presence information comprises privacy information.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the presence information comprises security information.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the interest information comprises privacy information.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the interest information comprises security information.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the interested host is associated with a merchant.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the interested host is associated with a shopping mall.

30. The computer readable medium of claim 18 further comprising:

if an overlap exists, enabling communication between the interested host and the wireless device.

31. The computer readable medium of claim 30 wherein the enabled communication is instant shopping.

32. The computer readable medium of claim 30 wherein the enabled communication assists a user of the wireless device to find something they are looking for.

33. The computer readable medium of claim 30 wherein the presence information is GPS information.

34. The computer readable medium of claim 30 wherein the presence information is triangulation information.

35. A presence information server comprising:

a communications subsystem for sending and receiving messages; and

a microprocessor adapted to execute instructions for;

receiving a set of interests from an interested host;

receiving presence information, the presence information being representative of a characteristic of mobile use of a wireless device;

determining if there is an overlap between the set of interests and the presence information; and

if an overlap exists, sharing information associated with the received presence information with the interested host.

36. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is one of a mobility event, a user activity event, an interested proximity event, a communication event, or a voluntary event.

37. The presence information server of claim 35 further comprising storing the set of interests in a persistent store.

38. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the characteristic of mobile use is a coupling of a user activity state with a contact proximity state and wherein the set of interests expresses an interest in a user of the wireless device.

39. The presence information server of claim 38 further comprising alerting the interested host that the wireless device is located in a proximate city.

40. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the presence information is received as a registration.

41. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the presence information comprises privacy information.

42. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the presence information comprises security information.

43. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the interest information comprises privacy information.

44. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the interest information comprises security information.

45. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the interested host is associated with a merchant.

46. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the interested host is associated with a shopping mall.

47. The presence information server of claim 35 wherein the microprocessor is further adapted to execute instruction for:

if an overlap exists, enabling communication between the interested host and the wireless device.

48. The presence information server of claim 47 wherein the enabled communication is instant shopping.

49. The presence information server of claim 47 wherein the enabled communication comprises assisting a user of the wireless device to find something they are looking for.

50. The presence information server of claim 47 wherein the presence information is derived using GPS.

51. The presence information server of claim 47 wherein the presence information is derived using triangulation.
