Abstract

A laminate film including a first polylactic acid layer; a second metal-receiving layer including PVOH, EVOH, or a blend thereof on a side of the first polylactic acid layer; and a metal layer deposited on a side of the metal-receiving layer opposite the polylactic acid layer. The metal-receiving layer may be coextruded with the polylactic acid first layer or may be a coating applied to one side of the polylactic acid first layer. This laminate film exhibits excellent gas and moisture barrier properties, appearance, and metal adhesion. It may also include a heat sealable or winding improving layer on the side opposite the metal receiving-layer of the first polylactic acid layer.

Claims

1. A laminate film comprising:

a biaxially oriented first layer comprising polylactic acid (PLA)

a second layer comprising uncrosslinked ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) contiguously applied on a side of the first layer; and

a metal on a side of the second layer opposite the PLA-containing layer.

2. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the first layer and the second layer are co-extruded.

3. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the second layer is solution coated on the side of the first layer.

4. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the second layer consists of EVOH or PVOH.

5. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the second layer comprises EVOH and PVOH.

6. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the second layer consists of a blend of EVOH and PVOH.

7. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the metal layer is vapor deposited on the side of the second layer.

8. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the metal layer comprises aluminum.

9. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the metal layer has an optical density of 1.5-5.0.

10. The laminate film of claim 1, further comprising a non-contiguous primer metal layer between the second layer and the metal layer.

11. The laminate film of claim 10, wherein the non-contiguous primer metal layer comprises copper or titanium.

12. The laminate film of claim 1, wherein the first layer or the second layer comprises a tie-resin.

13. The laminate film of claim 12, wherein the tie-resin comprises 0.5-10 wt. % of the first layer or the second layer.

14. A method of manufacturing a laminate film comprising:

coextruding a first layer comprising polylactic and a second layer comprising ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) such that the second layer is contiguously applied on a side of the first layer; and

vapor depositing a metal layer on a side of the second layer opposite the coextruded first layer.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the second layer consists of EVOH or PVOH.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the second layer comprises EVOH and PVOH.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the second layer consists of a blend of EVOH and PVOH.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the metal layer comprises aluminum.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the metal layer has an optical density of 1.5-5.0.

20. The method of claim 14, further comprising applying a non-contiguous primer metal layer on a surface of the second layer and then vapor depositing the metal layer on a surface of the non-contiguous primer metal layer.

21. The laminate film of claim 20, wherein the non-contiguous primer metal layer comprises copper or titanium.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the first layer or the second layer comprises a tie-resin.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the tie-resin comprises 0.5-10 wt. % of the first layer or the second layer.

24. The method of claim 14, further comprising biaxially orienting the coextruded first layer and second layer.

25. A method of making a laminate film comprising:

providing a first layer comprising polylactic;

solution coating a second layer comprising ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) contiguously on a side of the first layer; and

vapor depositing a metal layer on a side of the second layer opposite the coextruded first layer.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the second layer consists of EVOH or PVOH.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the second layer comprises EVOH and PVOH.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the second layer consists of a blend of EVOH and PVOH.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein the metal layer comprises aluminum.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein the metal layer has an optical density of 1.5-5.0.

31. The method of claim 25, further comprising applying a non-contiguous primer metal layer on a surface of the second layer and then vapor depositing the metal layer on a surface of the non-contiguous primer metal layer.

32. The laminate film of claim 31, wherein the non-contiguous primer metal layer comprises copper or titanium.

33. The method of claim 25, wherein the first layer or the second layer comprises a tie-resin.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the tie-resin comprises 0.5-10 wt. % of the first layer or the second layer.

35. The method of claim 25, further comprising biaxially orienting the first layer.
