Abstract

Providing rewards to a user by storing a user profile in memory of a computing device, the user profile including profile data including prior purchase history by the user including details of a plurality of transactions that have been previously executed by the user. The profile data is analyzed in accordance with a scoring algorithm to provide a score that is indicative of the relative value of the user, and the user is provided with a reward in accordance with the user'"'"'s score as indicated by the scoring algorithm. The reward provided to the user may be a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

Claims

1. A method of providing rewards to a user comprising:

a. storing a user profile in memory of a computing device, the user profile comprising profile data comprising prior purchase history by the user comprising details of a plurality of transactions that have been previously executed by the user;

b. analyzing the profile data in accordance with a scoring algorithm to provide a score that is indicative of the relative value of the user; and

c. providing the user with a reward in accordance with the user'"'"'s score as indicated by the scoring algorithm.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a low score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with low margins.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a high score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with high margins.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the computing device is a smart card.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the step of analyzing the profile data in accordance with a scoring algorithm to provide a score that is indicative of the relative value of the user is executed by a merchant POS terminal during interaction with the smart card.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of providing the user with a reward in accordance with the user'"'"'s score as indicated by the scoring algorithm is executed by the merchant POS terminal.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the merchant POS terminal provides the user with a reward by uploading the reward into the memory of the smart card.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of redeeming the reward provided to the user during a purchase transaction with a merchant.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the reward is redeemed by presenting the computing device to a merchant POS terminal during the purchase transaction.

11. A method of providing rewards to a user comprising:

a. storing a user profile in memory of a portable computing device, the user profile comprising profile data comprising prior purchase history by the user comprising details of a plurality of transactions that have been previously executed by the user;

b. a merchant POS terminal interacting with the portable computing device by;

(i) reading the profile data from the portable computing device;

(ii) analyzing the profile data in accordance with a scoring algorithm to provide a score that is indicative of the relative value of the user; and

(iii) providing the user with a reward in accordance with the user'"'"'s score as indicated by the scoring algorithm by uploading the reward into the memory of portable computing device.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a low score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with low margins.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a high score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with high margins.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the computing device is a smart card.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the merchant POS terminal further interacts with the portable computing device by redeeming the reward provided to the user during a purchase transaction with a merchant.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the reward is redeemed by presenting the computing device to a merchant POS terminal during the purchase transaction.

18. A method of providing rewards to a user comprising:

a. a user presenting a portable computing device to a merchant POS terminal during execution of a purchase transaction;

b. the merchant POS terminal accessing a memory on the portable computing device; and

c. the merchant POS terminal uploading into the memory of the portable computing device a reward based on the purchase transaction.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the reward uploaded into the memory of the portable computing device comprises a special offer, a coupon, or reward points.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the reward uploaded into the memory of the portable computing device is instantly redeemable.

21. The method of claim 18 wherein the reward uploaded into the memory of the portable computing device is redeemable in a subsequent transaction.

22. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of redeeming the reward uploaded into the memory of the portable computing device during a purchase transaction with a merchant.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the reward is redeemed by presenting the computing device to a merchant POS terminal during the purchase transaction.

24. A reward system comprising:

a. a computing device comprising memory, said memory storing a user profile comprising profile data comprising prior purchase history by the user comprising details of a plurality of transactions that have been previously executed by the user;

b. a merchant POS terminal programmed to interact with the computing device to

(i) analyze the profile data in accordance with a scoring algorithm to provide a score that is indicative of the relative value of the user; and

(ii) provide the user with a reward in accordance with the user'"'"'s score as indicated by the scoring algorithm.

25. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a low score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with low margins.

26. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the scoring algorithm provides a high score if the user'"'"'s prior purchase history indicates that the user has executed purchases of items with high margins.

27. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

28. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the computing device is a smart card.

29. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the merchant POS terminal provides the user with a reward by uploading the reward into the memory of the smart card.

30. The reward system of claim 24 wherein the merchant POS terminal is further programmed to redeem the reward provided to the user.
