Abstract

A computing device, such as a desktop, laptop, tablet computer, a mobile device, or a computing device integrated into another device (e.g., an entertainment device for gaming, a television, an appliance, kiosk, vehicle, tool, etc.) is configured to determine user input commands from the location and/or movement of one or more objects in a space. The object(s) can be imaged using one or more optical sensors and the resulting position data can be interpreted in any number of ways to determine a command, including 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional movements with or without touch.

Claims

1. A computing system, comprising:

a processor;

a memory; and

at least one imaging device configured to image a space,

wherein the memory comprises at least one program component that configures the processor to;

access data from the at least one imaging device, the data comprising image data of an object in the space,

identify at least one feature of the object imaged by the at least one imaging device,

determine a space coordinate associated with the feature based on an image coordinate of the feature, and

determine a command based on the space coordinate.

2. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein determining a command comprises determining an interface coordinate based on the space coordinate.

3. The computing system set forth in claim 2, wherein the interface coordinate is determined using an interactive volume.

4. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein determining a command comprises identifying a gesture by tracking at least the space coordinate over time.

5. The computing system set forth in claim 4, wherein the gesture is a two-dimensional gesture.

6. The computing system set forth in claim 4, wherein the gesture is a three-dimensional gesture.

7. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein determining a command comprises performing an edge analysis to determine at least one of a shape or posture of the object.

8. The computing system set forth in claim 7, wherein determining a command comprises tracking the shape or posture over time to identify a three-dimensional gesture.

9. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein determining a command is based at least in part on determining which one of a plurality of zones within the space contains the determined space coordinate.

10. The computing system set forth in claim 9, wherein the at least one imaging device comprises:

a first imaging device configured to image at least a first zone but not a second zone, and

a second imaging device configured to image at least the second zone.

11. The computing system set forth in claim 9, wherein the plurality of zones include a first zone proximate a display device and a second zone,

wherein the input command is identified as a selection in a graphical user interface if the space coordinate is contained in the first zone, and

wherein the input command is identified as a gesture if the space coordinate is contained in the second zone.

12. The computing system set forth in claim 9, wherein at least one imaging device is steerable to adjust at least one of a field of view or a focus to include an identified one of the plurality of zones.

13. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein the imaged space comprises a surface and determining a command comprises identifying whether a contact is made between the object and the surface.

14. The computing system set forth in claim 13, wherein the surface corresponds to a display interfaced to the processor or a layer of material atop the display.

15. The computing system set forth in claim 13, wherein the surface is at least partially reflective and determining the space coordinate is based at least in part on image data representing a reflection of the object.

16. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein the computing system comprises a tablet computer and the at least one imaging device is positioned at an edge of the tablet computer.

17. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein the computing system comprises a laptop computer and at least one imaging device comprises a plurality of imaging devices positioned along a keyboard of the laptop computer.

18. The computing system set forth in claim 1, wherein the at least one imaging device is included in at least one peripheral device interfaced to the processor.

19. The computing device set forth in claim 1 wherein the memory comprises at least one program component that configures the processor to deactivate an irradiation system during a low-power mode and to exit the low-power mode in response to detecting motion in the space.

20. The computing device set forth in claim 19, wherein the at least one imaging device comprises a plurality of imaging devices and, during the low-power mode, one of the plurality of imaging devices is used.

21. The computing device set forth in claim 1, wherein the memory comprises at least one program component that configures the processor to wake the computing device from a sleep mode in response to detecting motion in the space.

22. The computing device set forth in claim 21, wherein, during the sleep mode, the irradiation system is deactivated.

23. The computing device set forth in claim 21, wherein, during the sleep mode, a single row of pixels in one imaging device is used.
