Abstract

A patient support apparatus includes a frame, with a barrier, and a patient support surface supported in the frame. The apparatus further includes a control system with a controller, which is incorporated into the surface or the frame, and which is in communication with at least one functional component associated with the surface or the frame for controlling or monitoring the functional component. The control system further includes a touch-screen display in communication with the controller for controlling the functional component, which is positioned in the barrier between the exterior and interior side of the barrier wherein the display is incorporated into the barrier and accessible at the exterior or interior side for access by a user. The display is configured to allow the user to select the functional component and control or monitor a function associated with the selected functional component and includes a touch-selectable icon at the display representative of a function associated with the selected component, and with the icon operable to adjust the function of the selected component.

Claims

1. A patient support apparatus comprising;

a frame, said frame having a barrier;

a patient support surface supported in said frame, said barrier having an exterior side facing outwardly from the patient support apparatus and an interior side facing inwardly toward said patient support surface;

a plurality of functional components associated with said patient support surface or said frame;

a control system including a controller incorporated into said patient support surface or said frame and in operative communication with at least one of said plurality of functional components for controlling or monitoring said at least one functional component;

said control system further including a touch-screen display in communication with said controller for controlling said at least one functional component, said touch-screen display positioned in said barrier between said exterior side and said interior side wherein said touch- screen display is incorporated into said barrier and accessible at said exterior side or said interior side for access by a user, said touch-screen display configured to allow the user to select said at least one functional component and control or monitor a function associated with the selected at least one functional component; and

a touch selectable icon at said touch-screen display representative of a function associated with the selected at least one functional component, and said icon operable to adjust the function of the selected at least one functional component.

2. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said control system is in operative communication with each of said plurality of functional components.

3. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said at least one functional components comprises a section of said patient support surface, and said control system being operative to move said section of said patient support surface in response to input at touch-screen display.

4. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said touch selectable icon is operable to tilt at least a portion of said patient support surface about an axis for turning a patient supported on said patient support surface.

5. The patient support apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said patient support surface comprises an inflatable mattress, and said touch-screen display includes a second touch selectable icon operable to adjust the firmness of said mattress.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said patient support surface comprises an inflatable bladder for percussion or vibration treatment for a patient lying on said patient support surface, said touch-screen display includes a third touch selectable icon operable to actuate vibration or percussion treatment with said inflatable bladder.

7. The patient support apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said touch-screen display is pivotally mounted in said barrier.

8. The patient support apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said touch-screen display is pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis in said barrier.

9. The patient support apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said barrier includes a recess, said recess extending into said barrier from said exterior side, and said touch-screen display mounted to said barrier in said recess.

10. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said barrier comprises a footboard, said touch-screen display mounted to said footboard.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said barrier is removable from said frame and includes a plurality of connections adapted to removably mount said barrier to said frame, said support apparatus having an electrical system for powering said control system, and at least one of said connections providing an electrical connection for said touch-screen display to said electrical system.

12. The patient support apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said barrier comprises a footboard, said touch-screen display mounted to said footboard, and said foot board being removably mounted to said frame and having said connections.

13. A patient support apparatus comprising;

a frame, said frame having sides rails, a foot board, and a head board;

a patient support surface supported in said frame, said sides rails, said foot board, and said head board forming a barrier around said patient support surface, said barrier having an exterior side facing outwardly from the patient support apparatus and an interior side facing inwardly toward said patient support surface;

an actuator associated with said patient support surface or said frame for adjusting at least a portion of said frame or said support surface;

a control system including a controller in operative communication with said actuator for controlling said actuator;

said control system further including a touch-screen display in communication with said controller for controlling said actuator, said touch-screen display configured to allow the user to select a function associated with said actuator and control the function associated with the actuator; and

an icon at said touch-screen display representative of the function associated with the selected functional component, and said icon changing in response to a user controlling the function of the actuator to provide visual feedback to the user of the change made by the user.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 13, said touch-screen display positioned in a movable portion of said barrier between said exterior side and said interior side wherein said touch-screen display is incorporated into said barrier and accessible at said exterior side or said interior side for access by a user.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said at least a portion of said patient support surface or said frame comprises at least a portion of said patient support surface, and said control system being operative to effect a change in said portion of said patient support surface in response to input at touch-screen display.

16. The patient support apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said function comprises tilting of said portion of said patient support surface.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said patient support surface comprises an inflatable mattress, and said touch-screen display includes a second icon at said touch-screen display representing the firmness of said mattress, said touch-screen display configured to allow the user to adjust the firmness of said mattress, and said second icon changing in response to a user adjusting the firmness to provide visual feedback to the user of the change made by the user to the firmness.

The patient support apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said patient support surface comprises an inflatable bladder for percussion or vibration treatment for a patient lying on said patient support surface, and said touch-screen display includes a touch selectable icon at said touch-screen display for controlling the vibration or percussion treatment.

19. The patient support apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said touch-screen display is pivotally mounted in said barrier.

20. The patient support apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said barrier includes a recess, said recess extending into said barrier from said exterior side, and said touch-screen display mounted to said barrier in said recess.
