Abstract

Foam-formed collagen strands and methods for forming strands involve depositing a dispersed solution of an isolated cleaned, de-fatted, enzymatically-treated (or non-enzyme treated) human-derived collagen product having a preserved amount of its natural constituents into grooves of a grooved plate, and processing the dispersed collagen product to provide a foam-formed collagen strand. Foam-formed collagen strands may be processed into threads having a matrix of reticulated pores to conduct biological materials in and through the strand, the collagen of the collagen strand comprising isolated, enzymatically-treated human derived collagen having a preserved amount of its natural collagen constituents.

Claims

1. A foam-formed human collagen strand comprising a matrix of reticulated pores configured to allow movement of cells and fluid in and along the length of the strand, said strand formed by depositing a dispersed solution of human-derived collagen product on a template.

2. The foam-formed collagen strand of claim 1, wherein said collagen comprises one or more native human constituents selected from non-collagenous proteins, growth factors, cells, and extracellular matrix.

3. The foam-formed collagen strand of claim 1, wherein the foam-formed collagen strand comprises a matrix of reticulated pores to conduct biological materials in and through the strand.

4. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 1, where said foam-formed human collagen strand makes up at least a portion of a mesh structure.

5. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 1, wherein the strand makes up at least a portion of a fabric.

6. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 5, wherein the fabric comprises at least one of a woven, knitted, or felted fabric or a braided cable.

The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 1, wherein the foam-formed collagen strand comprises at least a portion of a wound repair scaffold, at least a portion of the foam-formed collagen strand being configured to promote directional movement of biological materials along the length of the strand.

8. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 1, wherein the foam-formed collagen strand comprises a compressed and twisted strand.

9. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 8, wherein the compressed and twisted strand comprises a cross-sectional diameter of about 0.006″

to about 0.009″

10. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 8, wherein the compressed and twisted strand comprises a cross-sectional diameter of about 0.010″

to about 0.012″

11. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 8, wherein the compressed and twisted strand makes up at least a portion of a braided cable.

12. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 11, wherein the braided cable further comprises non-collagenous filament or hybrid filaments.

13. The foam-formed human collagen strand of claim 1, wherein the human-derived collagen is intestinal, placenta, bladder fascia, or tendon tissue derived.

24. A medical implant comprising a foam-formed human collagen strand according to claim 1.

25. The medical implant of claim 24, wherein said implant comprises a braided cable configured to conduct biological materials along the length of strand.

26. The medical implant of claim 24, wherein said implant comprises a woven patch configured to conduct biological materials in one or more directions along the length of strand.

14. A method for preparing a foam-formed human collagen strand, comprising:

depositing a dispersed solution of an enzymatically-treated human-derived collagen product having a preserved amount of one or more native constituents into grooves of a grooved template to form a dispersed collagen product in said dispersed solution; and

processing the dispersed collagen product to provide said foam-formed human collagen strand.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the dispersed collagen product has a collagen density from about 0.1% to about 10%.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the dispersed collagen product comprises a sufficient amount of ethanol in the dispersion to prevent ice crystal formation and sharding.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein said processing comprises removing the liquid component of the dispersed solution.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein said processing comprises removing the liquid component by lyophilizing the dispersed solution.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein said processing comprises cross-linking the collagen in said collagen dispersion.

20. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

removing the foam-formed human collagen strand from the grooved plate; and

cross-linking the foam-formed collagen strand.

21. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

compressing the foam-formed collagen strand; and

twisting the foam-formed collagen strand.

22. The method of claim 14, further comprising coating the foam-formed human collagen strand with one or more of a collagen, pharmacologic, synthetic mixtures, hybrid mixtures, drugs, therapeutic agents and non-collagenous components that are released over time.

23. The method of claim 14, further comprising adjusting the foam density or the porosity of the foam-formed collagen strand to match a resorption rate of the strand to a healing rate of a repair site.
