Abstract

A sacroiliac joint fixation fusion system that provides a method of fixation and fusion of the sacroiliac joint and a sacroiliac joint implant which upon placement within the articular region of the sacroiliac joint facilitates stability and fusion of the sacroiliac joint.

Claims

1. A sacroiliac joint implant, comprising an elongate body adapted for placement in an interarticular space between articular surfaces within an articular region of a sacroiliac joint in general longitudinal alignment with a plane defined by said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint.

The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 1, further comprising a first radial member extending generally along a longitudinal axis of said elongate body, said first radial member adapted for placement in said interarticular space between said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint in general longitudinal alignment with said plane defined by said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint.

The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 2, further comprising a second radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body disposed in substantially opposed relation to said first radial member adapted for placement in said interarticular space between said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint in general alignment with said plane defined by said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint.

4. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 1, further comprising a first radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body, said first radial member adapted to extend into a bone of a sacrum or extend into a bone of an ilium.

5. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 4, further comprising a second radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body, said second radial member adapted to extend into said bone of said sacrum or extend into said bone of said ilium.

6. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 2, further comprising a second radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body, said second radial member adapted to extend into a bone of a sacrum or extend into a bone of an ilium.

7. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 3, further comprising a third radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body, said third radial member adapted to extend into a bone of a sacrum or extend into a bone of an ilium.

8. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 7, further comprising a fourth radial member extending generally along the longitudinal axis of said elongate body adapted to extend into said bone of said sacrum or extend into said bone of said ilium.

9. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 1, wherein said elongate member has cross sectional configuration substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said elongate member selected from the group consisting of:

circular, oval, triangular, square, and rectangular.

10. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 1, further comprising an axial bore which communicates between a first end and a second end of said elongate body.

11. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 8, further comprising one or more aperture elements which communicate through one or more of said elongate body or opposed faces of said radial members.

12. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 11, further comprising an amount of biocompatible material located within one or more of said aperture elements, said amount of biocompatible material containing one or more biologically active agents which promote bone growth.

13. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 8, further comprising a coat coupled to at least a portion of said external surface of said sacroiliac joint implant capable of biocompatible osseointegration with said bone of said ilium or said bone of said sacrum.

14. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in any one of claim 1, 2, or 3, wherein said sacroiliac joint implant has dimensional relations which upon placement in said interarticular space avoids driving apart said articular surfaces.

15. The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 14, wherein said sacroiliac joint implant has dimensional relations which upon placement in said interarticular space allows said articular surfaces to be urged into engagement with said sacroiliac joint implant.

The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 14, wherein said sacroiliac joint implant has dimensional relations which upon placement in said interarticular space allows placement of said sacrum and said ilium in a normal positional relation to correct a degenerative condition of said sacroiliac joint.

The sacroiliac joint implant as described in claim 8, wherein said sacroiliac joint implant has a configuration receivable within an implant receiving space cut into at least one of said articular surfaces which places said sacroiliac join implant in said interarticular space between said articular surfaces within said articular region of said sacroiliac joint in general longitudinal alignment in said plane defined by said articular surfaces.
