Abstract

Drug pump devices may be remotely controlled and/or reprogrammed by a smartphone or other wireless handheld device.

Claims

1. A smartphone-controllable drug pump device comprising:

a drug reservoir;

a pump for causing drug delivery from the reservoir;

a receiver for receiving control signals from a smartphone; and

in electronic communication with the receiver, a controller for adjusting operation of the device based, at least in part, on the control signals.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the controller adjusts operation of the pump based, at least in part, on the control signals.

The device of claim 2, further comprising a displaceable member having a first side facing the reservoir, wherein the pump applies pressure to a second side of the displaceable member so as to move the displaceable member to cause drug delivery from the reservoir, the controller adjusting operation of the pump by adjusting the pressure.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the controller is configured to permit modification of real-time operation of the pump in response to the control signals received by the receiver.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the control signals comprise at least one of a pump activation signal, a pump deactivation signal, or a pump rate.

6. The device of claim 1, further comprising at least one sensor for measuring an operational status of the device.

7. The device of claim 1, further comprising a sender for transmitting signals indicative of an operational status of the device to the smart phone.

The device of claim 1, further comprising a memory for storing instructions executable by the controller to operate the pump according to a drug delivery protocol, the controller being configured to permit modification of the stored instructions in response to the control signals received by the receiver.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the receiver is selected from the group consisting of an infrared receiver and a radio-frequency receiver.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the receiver is selected from the group consisting of a Wi-Fi receiver, a Bluetooth receiver, a Zigby receiver, and a near field communication receiver.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the drug pump device is implantable or adherable to a patient'"'"'s skin.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the drug pump device is implantable and adapted to deliver medications to a patient'"'"'s eye.

14. The smartphone of claim 12, wherein the communication module comprises a smartphone dongle.

15. The smartphone of claim 12, wherein the communication module facilitates bidirectional communication between the smartphone and the drug pump device.

16. The smartphone of claim 12, wherein the communication module facilitates at least one of near field communication, communication via Wi-Fi, or communication via Bluetooth.

17. The smartphone of claim 12, wherein the drug pump device and smartphone communicate via an infrared or radio-frequency link.

13. A smartphone operable for controlling an drug pump device having an on-board controller, the smartphone comprising:

a processor;

a communication module facilitating wireless communication;

a memory for storing a plurality of application programs;

an interface for facilitating selection of an application program and execution thereof by the smartphone processor, wherein one of the application programs, when executed, facilitates (i) receiving commands via the interface of the smartphone and (ii) based on the commands, issuing control signals to the controller of the drug pump device via the communication module.

18. A method of operating a smartphone-controllable drug pump device, the method comprising:

selecting an application program from a plurality of application programs stored in a memory of a smartphone;

executing the application program to facilitate (i) receiving commands via an interface of the smartphone and (ii) based on the commands, issuing a control signal to the drug pump device via a wireless communication module;

receiving the control signal at a receiver in the drug pump device; and

adjusting operation of the device based, at least in part, on the control signal.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising repeating the control signal from the smartphone by an intermediary transmitting device.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the intermediary transmitting device is associated with one of a pair of glasses or a wrist band.
