Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for allowing a user to obtain a listing of points of interest and associated media content listings based on the user'"'"'s current geographic location. The user'"'"'s current geographic location may be determined using, for example, a GPS transceiver incorporated in the user'"'"'s user access device. Information may then be communicated from a remote server to the user access device that identifies points of interest associated with the geographic location as well as media content listings associated with the points of interest.

Claims

1. A method for providing media content, the method comprising:

electronically receiving geographic location information from a mobile user equipment device;

determining, using electronic processing equipment, the geographic location of the user equipment device based at least in part on the geographic location information;

searching an electronic database of media content data to identify at least one point of interest in the vicinity of the geographic location and at least one media content listing that is associated with the at least one point of interest;

communicating the at least one media content listing to the user equipment device using a communications network; and

displaying the at least one media content listing on the user equipment device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the geographic location of the user equipment device comprises determining the geographic location of the user equipment device using a global positioning satellite system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the user equipment device is selected from a group consisting of:

a location detection computing device, a wifi computing device, a cellular network computing device, a satellite network computing device, and a combination thereof.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the location detection computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a navigation system, a smartphone, a computer, a location detection adapter, and a combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the wifi computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a smartphone, an internet phone, a digital camera, a computer, a video game console, a wifi modem, and a combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 3, where the cellular network computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a cellular telephone, a smartphone, a cellular modem, and a combination thereof.

7. The method of claim 3, where the satellite network computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a satellite telephone, a satellite modem, and a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the communicating comprises communicating using a wireless communications network.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the user equipment device is located in a vehicle.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving updated geographic location information from the user equipment device while the vehicle is moving;

determining, using the electronic processing equipment, an updated geographic location of the user equipment device based at least in part on the updated geographic location information;

searching the electronic database of media content data to identify at least one point of interest in the vicinity of the updated geographic location and at least one media content listing that is associated with the at least one point of interest;

communicating the at least one updated media content listing to the user equipment device using a communications network; and

updating the displayed media content listing with the updated media content listing.

11. A system for providing media content, the system comprising:

a mobile user equipment device;

a location detection module configured to generate geographic location corresponding to the location of the user equipment device;

an electronic database of media content data; and

electronic processing equipment configured to;

receive the geographic location information,

determine the geographic location of the user equipment device based at least in part on the geographic location information, and

search the electronic database of media content data to identify at least one point of interest in the vicinity of the geographic location and at least one media content listing that is associated with the at least one point of interest,

wherein the user equipment device is configured to receive the media content listing and display the media content listing.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the location detection module comprises a global positioning satellite system.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the user equipment device is selected from a group consisting of:

a wifi computing device, a cellular network computing device, a satellite network computing device, and a combination thereof.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the wifi computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a smartphone, an internet phone, a digital camera, a computer, a video game console, a wifi modem, and a combination thereof.

15. The system of claim 13, where the cellular network computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a cellular telephone, a smartphone, a cellular modem, and a combination thereof.

16. The system of claim 13, where the satellite network computing device is selected from a group consisting of:

a satellite telephone, a satellite modem, and a combination thereof.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the user equipment device is located in a vehicle.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein:

the location detection module is further configured to generate updated geographic location information and the electronic processing equipment is further configured to;

receive updated geographic location information from the user equipment device while the vehicle is moving,

determine an updated geographic location of the user equipment device based at least in part on the updated geographic location information, and

search the electronic database of media content data to identify at least one updated point of interest in the vicinity of the updated geographic location and at least one updated media content listing that is associated with the at least one updated point of interest,

wherein the user equipment device is configured to receive the updated media content listing and display the updated media content listing.

19. Computer-readable medium for use in providing media content, the computer-readable medium having computer program instructions recorded thereon for:

electronically receiving geographic location information from a mobile user equipment device;

determining, using electronic processing equipment, the geographic location of the user equipment device based at least in part on the geographic location information;

searching an electronic database of media content data to identify at least one point of interest in the vicinity of the geographic location and at least one media content listing that is associated with the at least one point of interest;

communicating the at least one media content listing to the user equipment device using a communications network; and

displaying the at least one media content listing on the user equipment device.
