Abstract

Techniques for optimizing presence information update requests for wireless devices on a wireless communication network by reducing the amount of access-network resources are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, presence information updates can be optimized by a presence module that is a single point of contact on a mobile device for presence requests from presence aware applications.

Claims

1. A system for optimizing the presence information refresh for a mobile device that is active on a wireless communication network, comprising:

a mobile device configured to cache presence information;

wherein the mobile device is configured to store state information for a plurality of available communications channels on the wireless communication network, wherein each communication channel is associated with a different communication protocol;

wherein the mobile device is configured to store presence information accessible to a plurality of applications installed on the mobile device;

wherein the mobile device is configured to select an available communication channel from the plurality to send a request for updated presence information;

wherein the mobile device is configured to update the presence information via the selected communication channel with information received from a remote computer system in response to a comparison of a quantification to a threshold; and

wherein the mobile device is configured to calculate the quantification from at least load information for a base transceiver station.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is configured to send the stored presence information to an application in response to the comparison of the quantification to the threshold.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is configured to select a reverse traffic channel in response to at least determining that the reverse traffic channel is open to the base transceiver station.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is configured to calculate the quantification from at least an access policy for an access network.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the quantification threshold is set by an access network.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is configured to calculate the quantification using at least priority information associated with an application requesting the presence information.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is configured to calculate the quantification using a timestamp for the stored presence information.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein an available communications channel of the plurality of communication channels that conforms to the IEEE 802.11 specification.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein an available communications channel of the plurality of communication channels that conforms to the IEEE 802.15 specification.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein an available communications channel of the plurality of communication channels includes a wired Ethernet based channel.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein an available communications channel of the plurality of communication channels includes a reverse traffic channel.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the presence information includes a capability of a remote mobile device.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the presence information includes device state information for a remote mobile device.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the presence information includes geographic location information for the mobile device.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the presence information includes user configurable status information associated with a remote mobile device.

16. A mobile device in selective communication with at least one base transceiver station on a wireless communication network, comprising:

circuitry for comparing a quantification calculated from at least information that indicates a load on the at least one base transceiver station; and

circuitry for sending a request for updated presence information to the at least one base transceiver station in response to the comparison.

17. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for returning cached presence information to an application executing on the mobile device in response to the comparison.

18. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for receiving information indicative of the threshold from the base transceiver station.

19. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for storing presence information for a plurality of applications stored on the mobile device.

20. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating the quantification from at least information that identifies that a reverse traffic channel is opened with the base transceiver station.

21. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating a quantification from at least a timestamp associated with cached presence information.

22. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating the quantification from at least information that identifies bandwidth of a wireless channel.

23. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating the quantification from at least priority information associated with an application requesting the presence information.

24. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating the quantification from at least information that identifies a mode of operation for the mobile device.

25. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for generating the quantification from at least information that defines a time period between subsequent requests for the presence information.

26. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for receiving information authorizing updates to presence information from the base transceiver station.

27. The mobile device of claim 16, further comprising:

circuitry for receiving information denying updates to presence information via reverse traffic channels from the base transceiver station.

28. The mobile device of claim 16, wherein the presence information includes a capability of a remote device.

29. The mobile device of claim 16, wherein the presence information includes information that identifies a state of a device.

30. The mobile device of claim 16, wherein the presence information includes location information for a device.

31. The mobile device of claim 16, wherein the presence information includes user configurable user status information associated with a remote device.

32. A computer readable storage medium including executable instructions, the computer readable storage medium, comprising:

instructions for detecting a plurality of available communication channels, wherein each available communication channel is associated with a different communication protocol;

instructions for selecting an available communication channel from the plurality; and

instructions for sending a request for updated presence information via the selected available communication channel.

33. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, further comprising:

instructions for selecting an available communication channel associated with a highest detected data rate.

34. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, further comprising:

instructions for selecting a reverse traffic channel from the plurality.

35. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, further comprising:

instructions for detecting the plurality of available communication channels in response to a comparison between a timestamp associated with presence information and the current time.

36. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, further comprising:

instructions for storing presence information for a plurality of applications stored on the mobile device.

37. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein the presence information includes a capability of a remote device.

38. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein the presence information includes information that identifies a user set application state associated with a remote device.

39. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein the presence information includes device state information for a remote device.

40. The computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein the presence information includes location information for a remote device.

41. A method for updating presence information at a mobile device on a wireless communication network, comprising:

storing a plurality of applications configured to request presence information from an operating system of a mobile device;

receiving, by a mobile device operating system, a request for presence information from an application of the plurality of applications;

comparing a timestamp associated with cached presence information to a threshold; and

updating the presence information in response to the comparison.

42. The method of claim 41, wherein updating the presence information in response to the comparison further comprises:

sending a request for presence information to a base transceiver station of an access network.

43. The method of claim 41, wherein updating the presence information in response to the comparison further comprises:

sending a request for presence information to a presence server via a communication channel that conforms to an IEEE 802.11 specification.

44. The method of claim 41, wherein updating the presence information in response to the comparison further comprises:

sending the updated presence information to the application.

45. A method for updating presence information at a mobile device on a wireless communication network, comprising:

storing a plurality of applications configured to request presence information from an operating system of a mobile device;

receiving, by a mobile device operating system, a request for presence information from an application of the plurality of applications;

comparing a timestamp associated with cached presence information to a threshold; and

sending the cached presence information to the application in response to the comparison.

46. A mobile device that selectively communicates across a wireless communication network, comprising:

means for receiving a request for presence information from an application executing on the mobile device;

means for determining that a transceiver of the mobile device is transmitting data on a reverse channel to a base transceiver station; and

means for sending a request for updated presence information over the reverse channel.

47. An access terminal on wireless communication network, comprising:

circuitry for caching a presence information update request;

circuitry for comparing a quantification for the presence information update request to a threshold, wherein the threshold is calculated from at least information that indicates a load on a base transceiver station; and

circuitry for sending the presence information update request to the base transceiver station in response to the comparison.
