Abstract

A temperature measurement system capable of operating in harsh environments including a temperature sensor having an antenna, diode, and dielectric layer disposed on the object of interest is provided, wherein the antenna includes a buried portion that extends through and is electrically coupled to the object of interest, and an exposed portion disposed upon an outer surface of the dielectric layer and the diode is coupled between the object of interest and the exposed portion of the antenna. The antenna is configured to receive interrogating signals from a transmitter, and to transmit response signals corresponding to the resonant frequency of the temperature sensor and its harmonics, which are indicative of the measured temperature of the object of interest. A receiver detects the response signals and correlates the frequency to a known temperature response of the dielectric material. Methods of making and using the temperature measurement system are also provided.

Claims

1. A system for measuring temperature comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit a first RF signal;

a receiver configured to receive a second RF signal;

a signal processor coupled to the receiver; and

a temperature sensor comprising,

a dielectric material having temperature-dependent electrical properties;

an antenna disposed at least partially within the dielectric material; and

a diode in communication with the antenna,

wherein the temperature sensor is configured to receive the first RF signal and to transmit the second RF signal,

wherein the signal processor determines a temperature measurement associated with the temperature sensor based on the second RF signal.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the dielectric material is attached to a turbine blade.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the distance between the antenna and the turbine blade is less than 0.25 mm.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the temperature sensor is configured to withstand temperatures in excess of 250 degrees Celsius.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein the dielectric material comprises yttria-stabilized zirconia, aluminum oxide, hafnia, magnesia or magnesium aluminate spinel.

6. The system of claim 2 further comprising a second temperature sensor having a second antenna attached to a second blade, wherein the second temperature sensor is configured to transmit a third RF signal.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the antenna has a different length than the second antenna.

8. The system of claim 7 further comprising a second receiver configured to receive the third RF signal.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising a second transmitter configured to transmit a fourth RF signal, wherein the second temperature sensor is configured to receive the fourth RF signal.

10. A temperature measurement device comprising:

a dielectric material having temperature-dependent electrical properties;

an antenna disposed at least partially within the dielectric material, the antenna having a resonant frequency that varies in response to temperature-dependent characteristics of the dielectric material, the antenna configured to receive a first RF signal; and

a diode in communication with the antenna, the diode configured to produce a harmonic of the first RF signal in response to receipt of the first RF signal;

wherein the antenna is configured to transmit a second RF signal as a function of the harmonic and the resonant frequency of the antenna.

11. The temperature measurement device of claim 10, wherein the dielectric material comprises yttria-stabilized zirconia, aluminum oxide, hafnia, magnesia or magnesium aluminate spinel.

12. The temperature measurement device of claim 11, wherein the antenna comprises platinum, palladium, rhodium or iridium.

13. The temperature measurement device of claim 12 further comprising a ground coupled to the diode, wherein the ground comprises a portion of a turbine blade.

14. The temperature measurement device of claim 13 wherein the distance between the antenna and the ground is less than 0.25 mm.

15. The temperature measurement device of claim 10 wherein the antenna is configured to withstand temperatures greater than 250 degrees Celsius.

16. The temperature measurement device of claim 12, wherein the diode comprises zinc oxide, alumina doped zinc oxide, indium doped zinc oxide, tin oxide, or indium oxide.

17. A method of measuring a temperature of an object using a temperature sensor attached to the object comprising the steps of:

transmitting a first RF signal to the temperature sensor using a transmitter;

receiving the first RF signal with an antenna of the temperature sensor;

converting the first RF signal to a second RF signal with the temperature sensor;

transmitting the second RF signal to a receiver, the receiver in communication with a signal processor; and

determining a temperature associated with the temperature sensor as a function of the second RF signal using the signal processor,

wherein the step of converting the first RF signal to a second RF signal comprises producing a harmonic of the first RF signal, and

wherein the second RF signal is a function of the harmonic of the first RF signal and the resonant frequency of the antenna.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the step of transmitting the first RF signal comprises sweeping the first RF signal through a range of frequencies.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of predicting the frequency of the second RF signal and wherein the range of swept frequencies includes the predicted frequency of the second RF signal.

20. The method of claim 17 further comprising the steps of:

transmitting a third RF signal;

receiving the third RF signal with a second temperature sensor;

converting the third RF signal to a fourth RF signal using the second temperature sensor;

transmitting the fourth RF signal; and

determining a temperature associated with the second temperature sensor as a function of the fourth RF signal.
