Abstract

An electronic message may be reconfigured to effect an enhanced notification using an input interface to receive at least one electronic message created by or on behalf of a message source for delivery to an intended recipient. A matching engine determines whether the electronic message corresponds to a predetermined definition of an enhanced notification. An enhancement engine reconfigures the electronic message to the enhanced notification if stored information related to the intended recipient indicates that the intended recipient is subscribed to receive the enhanced notification. Reconfiguring the electronic message may include reconfiguring the message to provide special handling, routing or presentation.

21. A method for reconfiguring electronic messages, comprising:

receiving an electronic message of a first type for a user;

determining, using at least one processor, preference settings associated with the user, the preference settings comprising at least preferences associated with a message source associated with received electronic message;

reconfiguring, using at least one processor and based on the preference settings, the electronic message of the first type into an electronic message of a second type; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

determining presence information associated with the user; and

reconfiguring the electronic message of the first type into the electronic message of the second type based at least on the determined presence information.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the presence information comprises at least one of an online presence, device presence, or physical presence.

24. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

identifying a delivery definition associated with the user;

determining a delivery mechanism for electronic message of the second type based on the identified delivery definition; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using the determined delivery mechanism.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising:

determining the user has not viewed the delivered electronic message of the second type in a predetermined amount of time; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using a second delivery mechanism.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the delivery mechanism is determined based at least on historical information associated with previous deliveries of electronic messages to the user.

27. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

determining that the user is not subscribed to receive reconfigured electronic messages; and

delivering the electronic message of the first type to the user without reconfiguring the electronic message to the second type.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

providing the user with an opportunity to subscribe to receive reconfigured electronic messages.

29. The method of claim 21, wherein the user preferences further comprise preferences associated with a service associated with the electronic message of the first type.

30. A system for reconfiguring electronic messages, comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory including instructions, that when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the operations of;

receiving an electronic message of a first type for a user,

determining preference settings associated with the user, the preference settings comprising at least preferences associated with a message source associated with the received electronic message,

reconfiguring, based on the preference settings, the electronic message of the first type into an electronic message of a second type, and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the operations performed by the one or more processors further comprise:

determining presence information associated with the user; and

reconfiguring the electronic message of the first type into the electronic message of the second type based at least on the determined presence information.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the presence information comprises at least one of an online presence, device presence, or physical presence.

33. The system of claim 30, wherein the operations performed by the one or more processors further comprise:

identifying a delivery definition associated with the user;

determining a delivery mechanism for electronic message of the second type based on the identified delivery definition; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using the determined delivery mechanism.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the operations performed by the one or more processors further comprise:

determining the user has not viewed the delivered electronic message of the second type in a predetermined amount of time; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using a second delivery mechanism.

35. The system of claim 33, wherein the delivery mechanism is determined based at least on historical information associated with previous deliveries of electronic messages to the user.

36. The system of claim 30, wherein the operations performed by the one or more processors further comprise:

determining that the user is not subscribed to receive reconfigured electronic messages; and

delivering the electronic message of the first type to the user without reconfiguring the electronic message to the second type.

37. The system of claim 36, wherein the operations performed by the one or more processors further comprise:

providing the user with an opportunity to subscribe to receive reconfigured electronic messages.

38. The system of claim 30, the user preferences further comprising preferences associated with a service associated with the electronic message of the first type.

39. A tangible computer-readable medium storing instructions for reconfiguring electronic messages, the instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform operations, comprising:

receiving an electronic message of a first type for a user;

determining preference settings associated with the user, the preference settings comprising at least preferences associated with a message source associated with the received electronic message;

reconfiguring based on the preference settings, the electronic message of the first type into an electronic message of a second type; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user.

40. The medium of claim 39, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more computer processors to perform further operations:

determining presence information associated with the user; and

reconfiguring the electronic message of the first type into the electronic message of the second type based at least on the determined presence information.

41. The medium of claim 40, wherein the presence information comprises at least one of an online presence, device presence, or physical presence.

42. The medium of claim 39, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more computer processors to perform further operations:

identifying a delivery definition associated with the user;

determining a delivery mechanism for electronic message of the second type based on the identified delivery definition; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using the determined delivery mechanism.

43. The medium of claim 42, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more computer processors to perform further operations:

determining the user has not viewed the delivered electronic message of the second type in a predetermined amount of time; and

delivering the electronic message of the second type to the user using a second delivery mechanism.

44. The medium of claim 42, wherein the delivery mechanism is determined based at least on historical information associated with previous deliveries of electronic messages to the user.

45. The medium of claim 39, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more computer processors to perform further operations:

determining that the user is not subscribed to receive reconfigured electronic messages; and

delivering the electronic message of the first type to the user without reconfiguring the electronic message to the second type.

46. The medium of claim 45, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more computer processors to perform further operations:

providing the user with an opportunity to subscribe to receive reconfigured electronic messages.

47. The medium of claim 39, the user preferences further comprising preferences associated with a service associated with the electronic message of the first type.
