Abstract

A tray stack (100) for accommodating a catheter assembly (1400) and medical devices (1401,1402,1403,1404,1409,1410, 1411,1412,1413) corresponding to catheter use includes a first tray (101) and second tray (102). Each tray (101,102) includes a tray opening, a base member (205,206), and sidewalls (203,204). When placed atop each other, they first tray (101) and second tray (102) form a tray stack (100). When unstacked and placed in a side-by-side, single layer catheter tray assembly (200), implements disposed therein can be arranged in a predetermined sequence corresponding to an order of use during a catheterization procedure. Mechanical couplings (300) can be included to permit the trays to translate with respect to each other. Retention mechanisms (710-713) can be included to hold the trays together.

Claims

1. A tray assembly configured to accommodate a catheter assembly and medical devices corresponding to catheter use, the tray assembly comprising:

a first tray having a first tray opening, a first tray base member, and first tray sidewalls; and

a second tray having a second tray opening, a second tray base member and second tray sidewalls;

wherein the first tray is configured to be placed atop the second tray, with the first tray base member disposed above to the second tray opening, so as to form a tray stack;

wherein the first tray and the second tray are configured such that they may be unstacked and placed in a side-by-side, single layer catheter tray assembly, wherein implements disposed in the first tray and other implements disposed in the second tray are arranged, when the first tray and the second tray are side by side, in a predetermined sequence corresponding to an order of use during a catheterization procedure.

2. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein each of the first tray and the second tray comprises a mechanical feature configured to couple the first tray and the second tray together when arranged as the side-by-side, single layer catheter tray assembly.

The tray assembly of claim 2, wherein the first tray comprises a first hook ledge extending from a first tray sidewall, further wherein the second tray comprises a second hook ledge extending from a second tray sidewall, wherein the first hook ledge and the second hook ledge are configured to engage to couple the first tray and the second tray together when arranged as the side-by-side, single layer catheter tray assembly.

4. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein one or both of the first tray or the second tray comprises one or more compartments therein, each of the one or more compartments being separated by another of the one or more compartments by a barrier.

5. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein the predetermined sequence corresponding to the order of use during the catheterization procedure comprises:

an underbuttocks drape for placement beneath a patient;

a syringe for dispensing lubricating jelly into the first tray;

the catheter assembly for insertion into the lubricating jelly and, subsequently, insertion into the patient.

6. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of one or both of the first tray base member and the second tray base member is contoured.

7. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein the implements and the other implements comprise at least one of the catheter assembly, one or more syringes, a specimen jar, gloves, swabs, or a specimen jar.

8. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein a first tray sidewall and a second tray sidewall each define an opening, with a first opening configured to align with a second opening when the first tray and the second tray are placed in the side-by-side, single layer catheter tray assembly.

9. The tray assembly of claim. 8, wherein the opening has a depth sufficient to permit a tubing member of the catheter assembly to pass therethrough from the first tray to the second tray.

10. A tray assembly configured to accommodate a catheter assembly and medical devices corresponding to catheter use, the tray assembly comprising:

a first tray having a first tray opening, a first tray base member, and first tray sidewalls;

a second tray having a second tray opening, a second tray base member and second tray sidewalls; and

a mechanical coupling connected between the first tray and the second tray;

wherein the mechanical coupling is configured to permit the first tray and the second tray to transition from a two-layer, stacked configuration to a single layer, side-by-side configuration with implements disposed in each of the first tray and the second tray arranged in a predetermined sequence corresponding to an order of use during a catheterization procedure when in the single layer, side-by-side configuration.

11. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises a pivot and slide mechanism.

12. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises a link and track mechanism.

13. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises one or more arm hinges.

14. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the mechanical coupling is configured to permit the first tray and the second tray to transition from the two layer, stacked configuration to the single layer, side-by-side configuration without inversion of either the first tray or the second tray.

15. The tray assembly of claim 10, further comprising a retention mechanism configured to selectively retain the first tray and the second tray in the single layer, side-by-side configuration.

16. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein a first tray sidewall and a second tray sidewall each define an opening, with one opening configured to align with another opening when the first tray and the second tray are placed in the single layer, side-by-side configuration.

17. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein each of the first tray and the second tray are trapezoidal in shape, wherein the first tray is smaller than the second such that when the first tray and the second tray are unstacked and placed side-by-side, they form a trapezoid having a perimeter defined by the first tray sidewalls and second tray sidewalls

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising placing the single-layer, side-by-side configuration between a patient'"'"'s legs atop the one or more layers of wrap.

18. A method of using a catheter package assembly, the method comprising:

providing the catheter package assembly, the catheter package assembly comprising;

a first tray having a first tray opening, a first tray base member, and first tray sidewalls; and

a second tray having a second tray opening, a second tray base member and second tray sidewalls;

wherein each of the first tray and the second tray are configured to transition from a two-layer, stacked configuration to a single-layer, side-by-side configuration;

one or more layers of wrap folded about the first tray and the second tray so as to enclose the first tray and the second tray within the one or more layers of wrap; and

a sealed bag disposed about the first tray and the second tray;

unsealing the sealed bag disposed about the first tray and the second tray to reveal the one or more layers of wrap folded about the first tray and the second tray;

unfolding the one or more layers of wrap to create a sterile field about the first tray and the second tray; and

transitioning the first tray and the second tray from the two-layer, stacked configuration to the single-layer, side-by-side configuration.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

obtaining an underbuttocks wrap from the catheter package assembly; and

placing the underbuttocks wrap beneath a patient.
