Abstract

The present technology maintains a profile for each user known to a content delivery system and selectively excludes delivery of certain content to some users based on past performance. The user profile includes a listing of all completed conversion actions associated with the invitational content presented to the user. When presented with a request for invitational content, the system identifies the set of all possible invitational content for the given context. Based on the user profile, the system removes from the set all invitational content for which the user has completed the associated conversion action to create a user-specific set of invitational content. The system selects an invitational content from the user-specific set of invitational content to include in the content package presented to the user.

Claims

1. A method of shaping a pool of invitational content comprising:

identifying a user of a handheld communications device;

maintaining a pool of invitational content as candidates for distribution to the user;

recording completed conversion actions by the user associated with at least one of the invitational content; and

designating the invitational content having a completed conversion associated therewith as exempt from distribution to the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the completed conversion action occurred without ever presenting the targeted application to the user.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising refreshing a record of recorded conversion actions after a period of time has elapsed.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising removing the designation of the targeted application as exempt from distribution to the user when the refreshed record does not include a recordation of a conversion action by the user.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein completed conversion actions by the user are gathered from a handheld communications device on which the conversion action took place.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising de-designating the targeted application as exempt from distribution to the user responsive to data indicating that the conversion action was undone.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the data indicating that the conversion action was undone is received from a handheld communications device on which the undoing of the conversion action took place.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the designation of a completed conversion is further associated with the handheld communication device, whereby invitational content converted on the handheld communication device results in an exempt designation for the invitational content with respect to the user and the handheld communication device, but does not result in an exempt designation for the invitational content with respect to the user and a different handheld communication device.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions stored thereon for causing a machine to perform a method comprising:

recording a conversion action completed by a user on a handheld communication device, the conversion action being an action that is desired to elicit by presenting invitational content to the user on the handheld communication device; and

designating an item of invitational content that was a candidate to be presented to the user as exempt from presentation to the user based on the recorded conversion action.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the completed conversion action occurred without ever presenting the targeted application to the user.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, further comprising refreshing a record of recorded conversion actions after a period of time has elapsed.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11, further comprising removing the designation of the targeted application as exempt from distribution to the user when the refreshed record does not include a recordation of a conversion action by the user.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein completed conversion actions by the user are gathered from a handheld communications device on which the conversion action took place.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, further comprising de-designating the invitational content as exempt from distribution to the user responsive to data indicating that the conversion action was undone.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14, wherein the data indicating that the conversion action was undone is received from a handheld communications device on which the undoing of the conversion action took place.

16. A system comprising:

a handheld communication device connecting using non-persistent network sessions, the handheld communication device being associated with a user and a content delivery system; and

a content delivery system including a content database configured to store a collection of invitational content, a user profile database configured to store data describing past conversion actions performed by the user and a pool processing module configured to designate at least one item from the collection of invitational content as exempt from distribution to the user.

17. The system of claim 16 further comprising:

an online store configured to report conversions to the content delivery system of at least one item of invitational content, the item of invitational content is configured to elicit a conversion through the online store.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein the handheld communication device is further configured to report when an item of invitational content that is presented to a user on the handheld communication device is converted.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the handheld communication device is further configured to report when the conversion of an item of invitational content is un-done.

20. The system of claim 16, wherein the handheld communication device is a smart phone.
