Abstract

Systems and methods for analyzing multiple components of a fluid sample are provided. In certain embodiments, a system can include an analyte detection system configured to measure first analyte data in a first component of a fluid sample received from a patient and measure second analyte data in a second component of a fluid sample. In some embodiments, one or more portions of an optical system is movable with respect to other portions of the system in order to optically and/or electrochemically analyze multiple components of a fluid sample. In other embodiments, optical and/or electrochemical analysis can be performed simultaneously on multiple components of a fluid sample. In some embodiments, a first analyte can be measured in a sample (e.g., whole blood) before the sample is separated into its components (e.g., plasma, red blood cells, etc.), and a second analyte can be measured in a component of the sample after separation.

Claims

1. A patient monitoring system for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the patient monitoring system comprising:

a fluid handling system configured to draw a fluid sample from a patient; and

a fluid analyzer configured to receive at least a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid handling system, the fluid analyzer further configured to;

measure a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample;

separate the at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components; and

measure a second analyte in one of the plurality of components;

wherein the at least a portion of the fluid sample that is separated is the same portion of the fluid sample that is used to measure the first analyte and is used to measure the second analyte.

2. A patient monitoring system for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the patient monitoring system comprising:

a fluid handling system configured to draw a fluid sample from a patient; and

a fluid analyzer configured to receive at least a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid handling system, the fluid analyzer further configured to;

measure a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample;

separate the at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components; and

measure a second analyte in one of the plurality of components.

3. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the fluid sample comprises whole blood.

4. The patient monitoring system of claim 3, wherein the one of the plurality of components comprises plasma.

5. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the first analyte is hemoglobin.

6. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the second analyte is glucose.

7. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the fluid analyzer is configured to measure the first analyte in an optical path between an optical energy source and a detector.

8. The patient monitoring system of claim 7, the fluid analyzer is configured to placing the one of the plurality of components of the at least a portion of the fluid sample in the optical path between the same optical energy source and detector used to measure the first analyte.

9. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the fluid analyzer comprises a sample cell for receiving the portion of the fluid sample, and wherein the fluid analyzer is configured to measure the first analyte while the portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell.

10. The patient monitoring system of claim 9, wherein the fluid analyzer is configured to separate the portion of the fluid sample while the portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell.

11. The patient monitoring system of claim 10, wherein the fluid analyzer is configured to measure the second analyte while the at least one of the components of the fluid sample is in the sample cell.

12. The patient monitoring system of claim 10, wherein the sample cell is held by a sample cell holder, wherein the sample cell holder is a centrifuge wheel with a central axis on which the centrifuge wheel is rotatable.

13. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein fluid analyzer is configured to measure the level of the first analyte prior to measuring the level of the second analyte.

14. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the fluid analyzer is further configured to measure a level of a third analyte in one of the plurality of components of the fluid sample.

15. The patient monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the fluid analyzer is configured to electrochemically measure at least one of the first analyte and the second analyte.

16. The patient monitoring system of claim 15, wherein the fluid analyzer comprises a sample cell for receiving the fluid sample and is configured to measure at least one of the first analyte and the second analyte using electrodes outside the sample cell.

17. A method for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the method comprising:

receiving a fluid sample from a patient, via a fluid handling system connected to a patient;

measuring a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample; and

separating the at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components in an automated analyte detection system configured to analyze a plurality of samples;

measuring a second analyte in one of the plurality of components.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the fluid handling system is configured to transport the received fluid sample to the analyte detection system.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising drawing the fluid sample from the patient with the fluid handling system.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the fluid sample comprises whole blood.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the one of the plurality of components comprises plasma.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein the first analyte is hemoglobin.

23. The method of claim 17, wherein the second analyte is glucose.

24. The method of claim 17, wherein the step of measuring the first analyte comprises placing at least a portion of the fluid sample in an optical path between an optical energy source and a detector.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the step of measuring the second analyte comprises placing the one of the plurality of components of the fluid sample in the optical path between the same optical energy source and detector used to measure the first analyte.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein the analyte detection system comprises a sample cell for receiving the portion of the fluid sample, and wherein measuring the first analyte is performed while the portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein separating the portion of the fluid sample is performed while the portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein measuring the second analyte is performed on the at least one of the components of the fluid sample while it is in the sample cell.

29. The method of claim 27, wherein the sample cell is held by a sample cell holder, wherein the sample cell holder is a centrifuge wheel with a central axis on which the centrifuge wheel is rotatable, and the step of separating the fluid sample into a first component and a second component comprises spinning the centrifuge wheel.

30. The method of claim 17, wherein the level of the first analyte is measured prior to measuring the level of the second analyte.

31. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of measuring a level of a third analyte in one of the plurality of components of the fluid sample.

32. The method of claim 17, further comprising electrochemically measuring at least one of the first analyte and the second analyte.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the analyte detection system comprises a sample cell for receiving the fluid sample and the method further comprising measuring the at least one of the first analyte and the second analyte using electrodes outside the sample cell.

34. The method of claim 17, further comprising receiving another fluid sample from the patient, via the fluid handling system connected to the patient.

35. A patient monitoring system for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the patient monitoring system comprising:

a fluid handling system configured to draw a fluid sample from a patient; and

a fluid analyzer configured to receive at least a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid handling system, the fluid analyzer further configured to;

measure a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample;

separate the at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components after measuring the first analyte; and

measure a second analyte in one of the plurality of components after separation.

36. A patient monitoring system for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the patient monitoring system comprising:

a fluid handling system configured to draw a fluid sample from a patient; and

a fluid analyzer configured to receive at least a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid handling system, the fluid analyzer further configured to;

measure a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample in an optical path between an optical energy source and a detector;

separate at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components; and

measure a second analyte in one of the plurality of components in the optical path between the same optical energy source and detector used to measure the first analyte.

37. A patient monitoring system for analyzing multiple analytes in a fluid sample, the patient monitoring system comprising:

a fluid handling system configured to draw a fluid sample from a patient; and

a fluid analyzer comprising a sample cell configured to receive at least a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid handling system, the fluid analyzer further configured to;

measure a first analyte in at least a portion of the fluid sample while the at least a portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell;

separate at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components while the at least a portion of the fluid sample is in the sample cell; and

measure a second analyte in one of the plurality of components while the one of the plurality of components is in the sample cell.

38. The patient monitoring system of claim 37, wherein the fluid analyzer comprises a centrifuge rotor configured to rotate the sample cell to separate the at least a portion of the fluid sample into a plurality of components.
