Abstract

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to monitoring and/or controlling blood glucose levels in patients. In particular, one or more substances may be delivered to a patient at a particular infusion rate while the patient'"'"'s estimated glucose level is within a predetermined range. A different insulin infusion rate may then be applied if the patient'"'"'s estimated blood glucose level deviates outside of the predetermined range.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

establishing a range about a blood glucose set-point for a patient;

delivering insulin to said patient at a basal insulin delivery rate while patient'"'"'s estimated glucose level is within said range; and

selectively applying a different insulin delivery rate to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range, said different insulin delivery rate being calculated based, at least in part, on said set-point.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said range is determined based, at least in part, on a predetermined daily insulin requirement established for said patient.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said different insulin infusion rate is based, at least in part, on a PID algorithm.

4. The method of claim 1, and further comprising selectively applying said different insulin infusion rate in response to a prediction that said glucose level is to be outside of range.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said different insulin infusion rate is less than said basal rate if said estimated glucose level is below said range.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said different insulin infusion rate comprises a zero insulin infusion rate.

7. The method of claim 1, and further comprising selectively applying a delivery rate based, at least in part, on a PID algorithm if said estimated blood glucose level is within said range and decreasing at a rate exceeding a threshold.

8. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:

selectively applying said basal insulin delivery rate while said estimated glucose level is above said range if insulin delivered to said patient over a sliding window exceeds a threshold amount.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said blood glucose set-point is determined based, at least in part, on a reference trajectory.

10. The method of claim 1, and further comprising receiving commands from said patient to determine insulin delivery, and wherein said selectively applying said different insulin delivery rate to said patient further comprises selectively applying said different insulin delivery rate in an absence of at least one command from said patient.

11. The method of claim 1, and further comprising selectively delivering glucose to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range.

12. The method of claim 1, and further comprising selectively delivering glucagon to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range.

13. An apparatus comprising:

means for establishing a range about a blood glucose set-point for a patient;

means for delivering insulin to said patient at a basal insulin delivery rate while patient'"'"'s estimated glucose level is within said range; and

means for selectively applying a different insulin delivery rate to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range, said different insulin delivery rate being calculated based, at least in part, on said set-point.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, and further comprising means for selectively applying said different insulin infusion rate in response to a prediction that said glucose level is to be outside of range.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, and further comprising means for selectively applying a delivery rate based, at least in part, on a PID algorithm if said estimated blood glucose level is within said range and decreasing at a rate exceeding a threshold.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, and further comprising means for selectively applying said basal insulin delivery rate while said estimated glucose level is above said range if insulin delivered to said patient over a sliding window exceeds a threshold amount.

17. An article comprising:

a storage medium comprising machine-readable instructions stored thereon which are executable by a special purpose computing apparatus to;

determine a range about a blood glucose set-point for a patient;

initiate delivery of insulin to said patient at a basal insulin delivery rate while patient'"'"'s estimated glucose level is within said range; and

selectively initiate application a different insulin delivery rate to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range, said different insulin delivery rate being calculated based, at least in part, on said set-point.

18. The article of claim 17, wherein said different insulin infusion rate is based, at least in part, on a PID algorithm.

19. The article of claim 17, wherein said instructions are further executable by said special purpose computing apparatus to initiate application of said different insulin infusion rate in response to a prediction that said glucose level is to be outside of range.

20. The article of claim 17, wherein said instructions are further executable by said special purpose computing apparatus to selectively initiate application of a delivery rate based, at least in part, on a PID algorithm if said estimated blood glucose level is within said range and decreasing at a rate exceeding a threshold.

21. The article of claim 17, wherein said instructions are further executable by said special purpose computing apparatus to selectively initiate application of said basal insulin delivery rate while said estimated glucose level is above said range if insulin delivered to said patient over a sliding window exceeds a threshold amount.

22. An apparatus comprising:

a blood-glucose sensor to generate a sensor signal representative of a glucose level in a patient; and

a controller adapted to;

initiate delivery of insulin to said patient at a basal insulin delivery rate while an estimate of said glucose level is within a range about a blood glucose set-point for said patient, said estimate of said glucose level being based, at least in part, on said signal; and

selectively initiate application of a different insulin delivery rate to said patient while said estimated glucose level is outside of said range, said different insulin delivery rate being calculated based, at least in part, on said set-point.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, and further comprising a user interface to receive commands from said patient to determine insulin delivery, and wherein said controller is further adapted to selectively initiate application of said different insulin delivery rate to said patient in an absence of receipt of a command at said user interface.
