Abstract

Cardiovertor/defibrillator with electronics (12) that receives a detection signal from a detection device (16) indicating whether a heart of a mammal is fibrillating, processes the detection signal by running a program and generates a control signal for a stimulation device (17) based on the detection signal in order to allow the stimulation device (17) to provoke defibrillation of the heart by a resuscitating stimulationin the area of the pharynx of the mammal. The apparatus has a nose plug.

Claims

1. A cardiovertor/defibrillator comprising:

a casing (11);

electronics (12) arranged within said casing (11);

a detection device (16) connected to said electronics (12);

a stimulation device (17) connected to said electronics (12); and

the electronics (12) being arranged to receive a detection signal from said detection device (16) indicating a disorder of a body including at least one of a fibrillating heart, a heart infarct, a brain infarct and a TIA, to process said detection signal and to generate a control signal for said stimulation device (17) based on said detection signal in order to allow said stimulation device (17) to generate a resuscitating stimulation in order to activate the respiratory centre in the brainstem and, in turn, counteract said disorder, the casing (11) being designed as a nose plug arranged to be inserted into a nostril, and the stimulation device (17) being arranged to stimulate a pharyngeal area of said mammal by a mechanical, chemical or electrical stimulation, and, in case, of electrical stimulation, the stimulation device comprises electrodes to be located on or in the pharyncheal area only.

2. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said cardiovertor/defibrillator comprising at least one of a thread, wire and fibre to stimulate said pharyngeal area in at least one of an electrical and mechanical way.

3. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said stimulation device (17) is arranged to provide a chemical composition into said nostril.

4. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said cardiovertor/defibrillator comprises a nose cap (60) connected to said casing (11).

5. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said casing (11) is made of a flexible biocompatible material.

6. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 5, wherein said flexible material is silicone.

7. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 6, wherein said electronics (12) comprise electronic components (31) on a flexible substrate (30).

The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said electronics (12) comprise a microprocessor (20) connected to a wave function generator (23), the wave function generator (23) being arranged to produce said control signal having a wave form selected from at least one of a sinus wave, block wave, spike train or any combination thereof with a predetermined frequency, duration and amplitude.

9. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said detection device (16) comprises a sensor (38) on said casing (11) for sensing a heartbeat signal.

10. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein said casing comprises a through hole (50) to allow said mammal to breath through said nostril.

11. The cardiovertor/defibrillator according to claim 10, wherein said detection device (16) is arranged to sense breathing activity from air flow through said through hole (50).

12. A method of counteracting a disorder of a body comprising:

detecting whether said body shows said disorder of a body including at least one of a fibrillating heart, a heart infarct, a brain infarct and a TIA;

generating a resuscitating stimulation in order to activate the respiratory centre in the brainstem and, in turn, activate the cardiovascular control centre and thus to counteract said disorder; and

wherein said resuscitating stimulation is applied to a pharyngeal area of said mammal.

13. The method according to claim 12, comprising implanting an implantable cardiovertor/defibrillator in or behind the nasopharynx in said mammal, which is designed to perform said detecting and said generating.
