Abstract

Tools for use in obtaining useful information from processed log messages generated by a variety of network platforms (e.g., Windows servers, Linux servers, UNIX servers, databases, workstations, etc.). The log messages may be processed by one or more processing platforms or “log managers” using any appropriate rule base to identify “events” (i.e., log messages of somewhat heightened importance), and one or more “event managers” may analyze the events to determine whether alarms should be generated therefrom. The tools may be accessed via any appropriate user interface of a console that is in communication with the various log managers, event managers, etc., to perform numerous tasks in relation to logs, events and alarms.

Claims

1. A method for distributing logs from one or more platforms of a data system to one or more receiving entities on the data system, comprising the steps of:

establishing, on a processing platform, at least one log processing rule for selectively processing logs associated with one or more monitored platforms;

receiving, at said processing platform, logs associated with said one or more monitored platforms;

processing, at said processing platform, said received logs using said at least one log processing rule;

identifying, from the processing step, a first subset of the received logs based on one or more metadata fields of the received logs and a classification of the received logs; and

distributing, to a receiving entity from said processing platform, information related to the first subset.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said receiving entity comprises at least one of internal users of the data system, third-party applications, and service providers.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:

selecting said receiving entity.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the distributing step further comprises:

utilizing user datagram protocol (“

UDP”

) or transmission control protocol (“

TCP”

) based Syslog.

5. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:

selecting at least one policy for use in identifying the first subset, wherein said at least one policy includes said at least one processing rule.

6. The method as set forth in claim 5, wherein said at least one policy includes a second log processing rule.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6, further comprising:

processing, at the processing platform, said received logs using said second log processing rule;

identifying, from the second log processing rule processing step, a second subset of the received logs based on one or more metadata fields of the received logs and a classification of the received logs; and

distributing, from said processing platform to the receiving entity, information related to the second subset.

8. The method as set forth in claim 5, further comprising:

assigning said at least one policy to said receiving entity.

9. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said information related to the first subset comprises at least one of original text of said received logs, at least one event designated from said received logs, and at least one alarm related to said received logs.

10. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising before the processing step:

processing the received logs to enrich the logs with the one or more metadata fields.

11. A method for use on one or more platforms of a data system, comprising the steps of:

establishing, on a processing platform, a number of log processing rules for selectively processing logs associated with one or more monitored platforms;

establishing, on the processing platform, an override setting in relation to at least one data management setting for logs that match at least one of the log processing rules, the at least one data management setting specifying whether or not an action is to be taken in relation to the logs matching the least one log processing rule;

receiving, at the processing platform, logs from said one or more monitored platforms;

operating said processing platform to identify received logs that match the at least one log processing rule; and

processing, at said processing platform, the matching received logs according to said override setting.

12. The method as set forth in claim 11, wherein the at least one data management setting comprises one of taking and not taking the action, and the override setting comprises the other of taking and not taking the action.

The method as set forth in claim 12, wherein the action comprises at least one of archiving the logs, indexing the logs, online storing of the logs, aggregation of the logs, forwarding of events identified from the logs, forwarding the logs to a data warehouse, false alarm rating of alarms designated from events, and combinations thereof.

14. The method as set forth in claim 11, wherein the received logs that match the at least one log processing rule are selected based on a classification of the received logs.

15. The method as set forth in claim 14, wherein said classification comprises at least one of auditing, operations, and security.

16. The method as set forth in claim 14, wherein the received logs that match the at least one log processing rule are selected based on content of one or more metadata fields of the received logs.

17. The method as set forth in claim 16, further comprising before the operating step:

processing the received logs to enrich the logs with the one or more metadata fields.

18. The method as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:

establishing an expiration period after which received logs are no longer processed according to said override setting and are thereafter processed according to the at least one data management setting.

19. A system for distributing logs from one or more platforms of a data system to one or more receiving entities on the data system, comprising:

a storage module including at least one log processing rule for selectively processing logs associated with one or more monitored platforms;

a receiving module for receiving logs associated with said one or more monitored platforms; and

a processor that is operatively interconnected to the storage module and the receiving module, wherein said processor is operable to;

process said received logs using said at least one log processing rule;

identify a first subset of the received logs based on one or more metadata fields of the received logs and a classification of the received logs; and

distribute, to a receiving entity from said processing platform, information related to the first subset.

20. The system as set forth in claim 19, wherein the processor utilizes user datagram protocol (“

UDP”

) or transmission control protocol (“

TCP”

) based Syslog to distribute the information to the receiving entity.

21. The system as set forth in claim 19, wherein the processor identifies the first subset according to at least one policy, wherein said at least one policy includes said at least one processing rule.

22. The system as set forth in claim 21, wherein said at least one policy includes a second log processing rule.

23. The system as set forth in claim 22, wherein said processor is further operable to:

assigning said at least one policy to said receiving entity.

24. The system as set forth in claim 22, wherein said processor is further operable to:

process said received logs using said second log processing rule;

identify a second subset of the received logs based on one or more metadata fields of the received logs and a classification of the received logs from the second log processing rule; and

distribute, to said receiving entity from said processing platform, information related to the second subset.

25. The system as set forth in claim 19, wherein said information related to the first subset comprises at least one of original text of said received logs, at least one event designated from said received logs, and at least one alarm related to said received logs.

26. The system as set forth in claim 19, wherein said processor is further operable to:

process the received logs to enrich the logs with the one or more metadata fields.

27. The system as set forth in claim 19, wherein said receiving entity comprises at least one of internal users of the data system, third-party applications, and service providers.
