Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods and devices for associating a first workspace data object with a first workspace service and for determining characteristics of the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service. The methods and devices described herein relate to receiving touch-screen based input in a plurality of display areas of a display to make the associations.

Claims

1. A portable computing device comprising a touch-screen display, the device being configured to provide functions for editing workspace data objects, including functions for associating a first workspace data object with a first workspace service and for providing a workspace service editor for editing a second workspace data object, the second workspace data object being populated with at least some data from said first workspace data object according to the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service, characteristics of the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service being determined by touch-screen user input in a plurality of user interface configurations including:

in a first user interface configuration, displaying selectable elements in a plurality of areas of said display, including a first display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed corresponding to a workspace data object and a second display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed for the selection of a workspace service;

in a second user interface configuration, displaying at least one new selectable element, the at least one new selectable element being displayed in at least a part of at least one of said first display area and said second display area;

in said first user interface configuration, receiving touch-screen user input to determine the at least one new selectable element; and

in said second user interface configuration, receiving touch-screen user input to select said one new selectable element and to determine a characteristic of the second workspace data object.

2. A portable computing device according to claim 1, wherein said at least one new selectable element comprises a plurality of new selectable elements.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, wherein touch-screen user input in said first user interface configuration includes a first user input action to select a selectable element in said first display area, to thereby select said first workspace data object, and a second user input action to select a selectable element in a different display area, said second user input action determining said at least one new selectable element.

4. A portable computing device according to claim 3, wherein said second user input action is to select a selectable element in said second display area, to thereby select said first workspace service.

5. A portable computing device according to claim 1, wherein said at least one new selectable element is displayed in at least a part of said first display area and replaces at least one selectable element displayed in said first display area in said first user interface configuration.

A portable computing device according to claim 3, configured to display said at least one new selectable element in response to said second user input action, and wherein touch-screen user input in the second user interface configuration is used to select said first workspace service using said one new selectable element.

7. A portable computing device according to claim 1 configured to display said at least one new selectable element in at least a part of said second display area and to replace at least one selectable element displayed in said second display area in said first user interface configuration.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to receive touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations including a first user input action to select said first workspace data object, a second user input action in said first user interface configuration to define a characteristic of said second user interface configuration, and a third user input action to select said one new selectable element displayed in said second user interface configuration.

9. A portable computing device according to claim 8, configured to display, in response to said third user input action, a workspace service editor user interface to edit said second workspace data object using said workspace service editor.

10. A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to display, in response to said user input in said second user interface configuration to select said one new selectable element, at least one further user interface configuration, and

to display, in the at least one further user interface configuration, at least one new selectable element, the at least one new selectable element being displayed in at least a part of at least one of said first display area and said second display area, and

wherein user input in said at least one further user interface configuration to select said one new selectable element determines a characteristic of the second workspace data object.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to receive touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations in the form of movement input received from the touch-screen display, said movement input beginning at the position of a selectable element in the first user interface configuration.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to receive touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations in the form of movement input received from the touch-screen display, said movement input pausing for at least a predetermined time period at the position of a selectable element in the first user interface configuration.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to receive touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations in the form of movement input received from the touch-screen display, said movement input ending at the position of a selectable element in the second user interface configuration.

14. A portable computing device according to claim 1, configured to receive touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations in the form of continuous movement input to the touch-screen display between the different user interface configurations.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, comprising a network interface for conducting communications via a communications network, the portable computing device being configured to connect to a remote data processing device via the communications network, the portable computing device being configured to transmit said second workspace data object to transmit to said remote data processing device via the communications network during the provision of a workspace service.

A portable computing device according to claim 1, comprising a network interface for conducting communications via a communications network, the portable computing device being configured to connect to a remote data processing device via the communications network, the portable computing device being configured to receive said first workspace data object from said remote data processing device via the communications network during the provision of a workspace service.

17. A portable computing device according to claim 1, wherein the second workspace data object is a calendar entry and touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations determines a date characteristic of the calendar entry.

18. A portable computing device according to claim 1, wherein the second workspace data object is an email and touch-screen user input in said plurality of different user interface configurations determines a recipient characteristic of the email.

A method for providing functions for editing workspace data objects in a portable computing device comprising a touch-screen display, wherein said functions for editing workspace data objects include functions for associating a first workspace data object with a first workspace service and for providing a workspace service editor for editing a second workspace data object, wherein the second workspace data object is populated with at least some data from said first workspace data object according to the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service, wherein characteristics of the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service are determined by touch-screen user input in a plurality of user interface configurations, the method comprising:

displaying, in a first user interface configuration, selectable elements in a plurality of areas of said display, including a first display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed corresponding to a workspace data object and a second display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed for the selection of a workspace service,

displaying, in a second user interface configuration, at least one new selectable element, the at least one new selectable element being displayed in at least a part of at least one of said first display area and said second display area;

determining the at least one new selectable element from touch-screen user input in said first user interface configuration, and

determining, from touch-screen user input in said second user interface configuration to select said one new selectable element, a characteristic of the second workspace data object.

A non-transitory computer readable medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by a portable computing device, will cause the portable computing device to provide functions for editing workspace data objects in a portable computing device comprising a touch-screen display, wherein said functions for editing workspace data objects include functions for associating a first workspace data object with a first workspace service and for providing a workspace service editor for editing a second workspace data object, wherein the second workspace data object is populated with at least some data from said first workspace data object according to the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service, wherein characteristics of the association of the first workspace data object with the first workspace service are determined by touch-screen user input in a plurality of user interface configurations, said computer-executable instructions causing the portable computing device to:

display, in a first user interface configuration, selectable elements in a plurality of areas of said display, including a first display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed corresponding to a workspace data object and a second display area in which at least one selectable element is displayed for the selection of a workspace service;

display in a second user interface configuration at least one new selectable element, the at least one new selectable element being displayed in at least a part of at least one of said first display area and said second display area;

determine the at least one new selectable element from touch-screen user input in said first user interface configuration; and

determine, from touch-screen user input in said second user interface configuration selecting said one new selectable element, a characteristic of the second workspace data object.
