Abstract

Apparatus and methods for arranging a set of media items based on user profiles are disclosed. The apparatus includes a processor in communication with user identification ports and a plurality of surfaces for displaying media items. The processor in accordance with the invention receives a user identifier from one of the user identification ports, retrieves a user profile associated with the user identifier, calculates a preference vector for the media items within the set based on the user profile, and directs the plurality of surfaces to change an arrangement of the display of the set of media items from a first configuration to a second configuration based on the preference vector. The processor thereby changes which of the first set of media items is displayed on at least one of the plurality of surfaces.

Claims

1. An apparatus for changing an arrangement of a display of a first set of media items based on at least one user profile, the apparatus comprising:

a plurality of surfaces for displaying media items, the plurality of surfaces having a first configuration such that each of the plurality of surfaces displays at least a first set of media items comprising at least one of an image, a video, and a selected light source radiation;

a plurality of user identification ports, each of the plurality of user identification ports capable of detecting at least one user identifier; and

at least one processor in communication with the plurality of user identification ports and the plurality of surfaces, the at least one processor configured to;

receive a first user identifier from a first of the plurality of user identification ports,

retrieve a first user profile associated with the first user identifier from memory,

calculate a preference vector for the media items in the first set of media items based on the first user profile, and

direct the plurality of surfaces to display the first set of media items in a second configuration based on the preference vector, thereby changing which of the first set of media items is displayed on at least one of the plurality of surfaces.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a first surface displays a first media item in the first configuration and the first surface displays a second media item in the second configuration.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to identify an indicator in the first user profile that a user associated with the first user profile prefers a first media item over a second media item in the first set.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processor configured to direct the plurality of surfaces to display the first set of media items in a second configuration is further configured to:

direct a first surface to display a first media item,

then direct a second surface to display the first media item, and

then direct a third surface to display the first media item,

wherein the third surface is closer to the first user identification port than the second surface and the second surface is closer to the first user identification port than the first surface, and

wherein the preference vector indicates that a user prefers the first media item over those previously displayed on the first surface, the second surface, and the third surface.

The apparatus of claim 4 wherein a speed at which the processor directs the first surface, the second surface, and the third surface to change their display corresponds to a strength of an indicator in the preference vector that the user prefers the first media item over those previously displayed on the first surface, the second surface, and the third surface.

6. An apparatus for arranging a first set of media items based on a plurality of user profiles, the system comprising:

a plurality of surfaces for displaying media items, the plurality of surfaces having a first configuration such that each of the plurality of surfaces displays at least one of the first set of media items;

a plurality of user identification ports, each of the plurality of user identification ports capable of detecting at least one user identifier, wherein a first user identification port detects a first user identifier and a second user identification port detects a second user identifier; and

at least one processor in communication with the plurality of user identification ports and the plurality of surfaces, the at least one processor configured to;

receive the first user identifier from the first user identification port and the second user identifier from the second user identification port,

retrieve the first user profile associated with the first user identifier and the second user profile associated with the second user identifier,

calculate a first preference vector for the media items in the first set of media items based on the first user profile and a second preference vector for the media items in the first set of media items based on the second user profile, and

direct the plurality of surfaces to display the first set of media items in a second configuration based on the first preference vector and the second preference vector.

The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the processor directs a first surface between the first user identification port and the second user identification port to display a first media item in the second configuration, and wherein the first preference vector and the second preference vector each includes an indicator of preference for the first media item.

8. The apparatus of claim 6,

wherein the processor configured to calculate the first and the second preference vector for the media items is further configured to identify

an indicator in the first user profile that the first user prefers a first media item over a second media item in the first set;

and

an indicator in the second user profile that the second user prefers a third media item over a fourth media item in the first set.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the processor configured to direct the plurality of surfaces to display the first set of media items in a second configuration is further configured to:

direct a first surface displaying a second media item to display a first media item,

direct a second surface displaying the first media item to display the second media item,

direct a third surface displaying a fourth media item to display a third media item, and

direct a fourth surface displaying the third media item to display the fourth media item,

wherein the first surface is closer to the first user identification port than the second surface, and wherein the third surface is closer to the second user identification port than the fourth surface.

10. A method for changing an arrangement of the display of a first set of media items on a plurality of surfaces for displaying media items based on at least one user profile, the method comprising:

receiving, at a processor from a first user identification port, a first user identifier;

retrieving, with the processor from a memory, a first user profile associated with the first user identifier; and

calculating a first preference vector for the media items in the first set of media items based on the first user profile; and

directing, with a communication device, an arrangement of the media items on the plurality of surfaces to be changed from a first configuration to a second configuration based on the first preference vector.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising identifying, with the processor, an indicator in the first user profile that a user associated with the first user profile prefers the first media item over the second media item in the first set.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the indicator in the first user profile that a user associated with the first user profile prefers a first media item over a second media item in the first set comprises a comparison of a rating of the first media item with a rating of the second media item.

The method of claim 11, wherein an indicator in the first user profile that a user associated with the first user profile prefers a first media item over a second media item in the first set comprises determining that the first media item falls within a highly-rated category of the media items and that the second media item does not fall within the highly-rated category of the media items.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising directing with the processor a first surface displaying a first media item to display a second media item and directing a second surface displaying the second media item to display the first media item.

15. An apparatus for arranging a set of media items based on at least one user profile, the system comprising:

a plurality of media output devices for producing media items, the plurality of output devices producing the set of media items in a first configuration such that each of the plurality of output devices produces at least a first set of media items comprising at least one of an image, and a video, a selected light source radiation, and a portion of sound recording;

a plurality of user identification ports, each of the plurality of user identification ports capable of detecting at least one user identifier, wherein a first user identification port detects a first user identifier; and

at least one processor in communication with the plurality of user identification ports and the plurality of surfaces, wherein the at least one processor

receives the first user identifier from the first user identification port,

retrieves the first user profile associated with the first user identifier, and

calculates a first preference vector for the media items in the first set of media items based on the first user profile, and

directs the plurality of output devices to produce the first set of media items in a second configuration in accordance with the first preference vector.

The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the processor directing the plurality of output devices to produce the first set of media items in a second configuration comprises directing a first surface displaying a first media item to display a second media item and directing a second surface displaying the second media item to display the first media item.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to execute an executive module that generates a control signal directed to the at least one controllable lighting network based on the plurality of adjustments to the at least one controllable lighting network.
