Abstract

A fastener cartridge can comprise a support portion, a tissue thickness compensator positioned relative to the support portion, and a plurality of fasteners positioned within the support portion and/or the tissue thickness compensator which can be utilized to fasten tissue. In use, the fastener cartridge can be positioned in a first jaw of a surgical fastening device, wherein a second jaw, or anvil, can be positioned opposite the first jaw. To deploy the fasteners, a staple-deploying member is advanced through the fastener cartridge to move the fasteners toward the anvil. As the fasteners are deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the tissue thickness compensator therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened.

Claims

1. An anvil for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said anvil comprising:

a plurality of primary staple pockets, wherein each said primary staple pocket is configured and intended to receive a staple leg of a staple; and

a plurality of secondary staple pockets surrounding each said primary staple pocket, wherein each said secondary staple pocket is configured to receive a said staple leg.

2. The anvil of claim 1, further comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said primary staple pockets are arranged along one or more lines.

3. The anvil of claim 1, wherein said primary staple pockets are arranged in a first circle comprising a first circumference, and wherein said secondary staple pockets are arranged in a second circle comprising a second circumference.

4. The anvil of claim 3, wherein said second circumference is larger than said first circumference.

5. The anvil of claim 3, wherein said first circumference is concentric with said second circumference.

6. The anvil of claim 1, wherein said primary staple pockets are arranged in a primary circle comprising a primary circumference, and wherein said secondary staple pockets are arranged in an inner circle defined within said primary circumference and an outer circle defined outside of said primary circumference.

7. The anvil of claim 1, wherein each said primary staple pocket comprises a set of forming cups, wherein each set of forming cups consists of a first primary forming cup and a second primary forming cup, wherein at least one said secondary staple pocket is positioned adjacent to said first primary forming cup, and wherein at least one said secondary staple pocket is positioned adjacent to said second primary forming cup.

8. The anvil of claim 1, wherein said plurality of secondary staple pockets comprises sets of forming cups, and wherein each set of forming cups consists of an array of forming cups at least partially surrounding a primary staple pocket.

9. The anvil of claim 1, wherein said plurality of primary staple pockets are arranged in a first plurality of rows, and wherein said plurality of secondary staple pockets are arranged in a second plurality of rows which are parallel to said first plurality of rows.

10. The anvil of claim 1, wherein said plurality of primary staple pockets are arranged in a first row and a second row, and wherein said plurality of secondary staple pockets are positioned intermediate said first row and said second row.

11. An anvil for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said anvil comprising:

a plurality of primary staple cavities, wherein each said primary staple cavity comprises a first forming cup and a second forming cup, and wherein said first forming cup and said second forming cup are each configured and intended to receive and deform a staple leg of a staple; and

a plurality of secondary forming cups, wherein at least one said secondary forming cup is positioned adjacent to each said first forming cup, wherein at least one secondary forming cup is positioned adjacent to each said second forming cup, and wherein said secondary forming cups are configured to receive said staple legs.

12. The anvil of claim 11, further comprising a proximal end and a distal end.

13. The anvil of claim 11, wherein said anvil is circular.

14. The anvil of claim 11, wherein said plurality of secondary forming cups comprises an array of secondary forming cups at least partially surrounding each said first forming cup and each said second forming cup.

15. The anvil of claim 11, wherein said plurality of primary staple cavities are arranged in a first plurality of rows, and wherein said plurality of secondary staple cavities are arranged in a second plurality of rows which are parallel to said first plurality of rows.

16. The anvil of claim 11, wherein said plurality of primary staple cavities are arranged in a first row and a second row, and wherein said plurality of secondary staple cavities are positioned intermediate said first row and said second row.

17. An anvil for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said anvil comprising:

an array of primary staple pockets, wherein each said primary staple pocket is configured and intended to receive a staple leg of a staple; and

an array of secondary staple pockets, wherein said secondary staple pockets are positioned intermediate said primary staple pockets, and wherein said secondary staple pockets are configured to receive said staple legs.

18. The anvil of claim 17, further comprising a proximal end and a distal end.

19. The anvil of claim 17, wherein said anvil is circular.

20. The anvil of claim 17, wherein said array of primary staple pockets comprises sets of staple pockets, wherein each set of staple pockets consists of a first primary staple pocket and a second primary staple pocket, wherein at least one said secondary staple pocket is positioned adjacent to said first primary staple pocket, and wherein at least one said secondary staple pocket is positioned adjacent to said second primary staple pocket.
