Abstract

An apparatus and method support intuitive gestures for turning electronic book (e-book) pages in a portable terminal. The portable terminal executes an e-book and determines whether a just preceding page gesture is input, the just preceding page gesture comprising a first contact that starts to the left of a right-side user interface (UI) activation region of the e-book, followed by a drag toward the right while maintaining the first contact and releasing the first contact. When the just preceding page gesture is input, the just preceding page is displayed on a screen.

Claims

1. A method for turning electronic book (e-book) pages in a portable terminal having an e-book function, the method comprising:

executing an e-book;

determining whether a just preceding page gesture is input, the just preceding page gesture comprising a first contact that starts to the left of a right-side user interface (UI) activation region of the e-book, followed by a drag toward the right while maintaining the first contact and releasing the first contact; and

when the just preceding page gesture is input, displaying the just preceding page relative to a currently displayed page on a screen.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether a just next page gesture is input, the just next page gesture comprising a second contact that starts to the right of a left-side UI activation region of the e-book, followed by a drag toward the left while maintaining the second contact and releasing the second contact; and

when the just next page gesture is input, displaying the just next page on the screen.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether a third contact that starts in the right-side UI activation region of the e-book is made; and

when the third contact is made in the right-side UI activation region of the e-book;

displaying the right side of the e-book,

determining whether a single next page gesture is input, the single next page gesture comprising a drag to the left while maintaining the third contact and releasing the third contact, and

when the single next page gesture is input, displaying the just next page on the screen.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether a fourth contact that starts in the left-side UI activation region of the e-book is made; and

when the fourth contact is made in the left-side UI activation region of the e-book;

displaying the left side of the e-book,

determining whether a single previous page gesture is input, the single previous page gesture comprising a drag to the right while maintaining the fourth contact and releasing the fourth contact, and

when the single previous page gesture is input, displaying the just preceding page on the screen.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether a bookmark On switch is touched in an upper UI activation region of the e-book; and

when the bookmark On switch is touched in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, activating a bookmark function.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

determining whether a generate bookmark gesture is input, the generate bookmark gesture comprising a fifth contact that starts in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, followed by a downward drag while maintaining the fifth contact;

when the generate bookmark gesture is input, generating a clip corresponding to a bookmark to be added;

determining whether the fifth contact is released after the generate bookmark gesture is input; and

when the fifth contact is released after the generate bookmark gesture, positioning the generated clip at a position where the fifth contact is released.

7. An apparatus for turning electronic book (e-book) pages in a portable terminal having an e-book function, the apparatus comprising:

an e-book viewer configured to execute an e-book, determine whether a just preceding page gesture is input, the just preceding page gesture comprising a first contact that starts to the left of a right-side user interface (UI) activation region of the e-book, followed by a drag toward the right while maintaining the first contact and releasing the first contact, and when the just preceding page gesture is input, control a display unit to display the just preceding page on a screen; and

the display unit configured to display, on the screen, a corresponding page of the e-book according to the control of the e-book viewer.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a just next page gesture is input, the just next page gesture comprising a second contact that starts to the right of a left-side UI activation region of the e-book, followed by a drag toward the left while maintaining the second contact and releasing the second contact, and

when the just next page gesture is input, control the display unit to display the just next page on the screen.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a third contact that starts in the predetermined right-side UI activation region of the e-book is made, and

when the third contact is made in the right-side UI activation region of the e-book;

control the display unit to display the right side of the e-book,

determine whether a single next page gesture is input, the single next page gesture comprising a drag to the left while maintaining the third contact and releasing the third contact, and

when the single next page gesture is input, control the display unit to display the just next page on the screen.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a fourth contact that starts in the left-side UI activation region of the e-book is made, and

when the fourth contact is made in the left-side UI activation region of the e-book;

control the display unit to display the left side of the e-book,

determine whether a single previous page gesture is input, the single previous page gesture comprising a drag to the right while maintaining the fourth contact and releasing the fourth contact, and

when the single previous page gesture is input, control the display unit to display the just preceding page on the screen.

11. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a bookmark On switch is touched in an upper UI activation region of the e-book, and

when the bookmark On switch is touched in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, activate a bookmark function.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a generate bookmark gesture is input, the generate bookmark gesture comprising a fifth contact that starts in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, followed by a downward drag,

when the generate bookmark gesture is input, generate a clip corresponding to a bookmark to be added,

determine whether the fifth contact is released after the generate bookmark gesture is input, and

when the fifth contact is released after the generate bookmark gesture, position the generated clip at a position where the fifth contact is released.

13. A method for turning electronic book (e-book) pages in a portable terminal having an e-book function, the method comprising:

executing an e-book;

displaying a shortcut item list in an upper user interface (UI) activation region of the e-book;

determining whether a shortcut gesture is input, the shortcut gesture comprising a touch for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list followed by a horizontal drag and a release of the touch; and

when the shortcut gesture is input, displaying a page corresponding to the one shortcut item on a screen.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

determining whether a sub item gesture is input, the sub item gesture comprising a touch for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list followed by a downward drag and a release of the touch; and

when the sub item gesture is input, displaying a sub item list of the one shortcut item on the screen.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining whether a touch is input for one sub item among the displayed sub item list followed by a release of the touch; and

when the touch for the one sub item followed by the release of the touch is input, displaying a page corresponding to the one sub item on the screen.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining whether a remove sub item list gesture is input, the remove sub item list gesture comprising a touch for one sub item among the displayed sub item list followed by an upward drag and a release of the touch; and

when the remove sub item list gesture is input, removing the displaying of the sub item list of the one shortcut item on the screen.

17. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

determining whether a shortcut list scroll gesture is input, the shortcut list scroll gesture comprising a touch in the upper UI activation region followed by a horizontal drag and a release of the touch; and

when the shortcut list scroll is input, scrolling the shortcut item list according to the horizontal drag in the upper UI activation region on the screen.

18. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

determining whether a zoom gesture is input, the zoom gesture comprising a multi touch in the upper UI activation region followed by a drag of at least one of the points of the multi touch;

when the zoom gesture is input, determining whether a distance value between the points of the multi increases;

when the distance value between the points of the multi touch increases, displaying the shortcut item list of an enlarged size corresponding to the increased distance value between the points in the upper UI activation region of the screen; and

when the distance value between the points of the multi touch decreases, displaying the shortcut item list of a reduced size corresponding to the decreased distance value between the points in the upper UI activation region of the screen.

19. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining whether a long touch is input for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book;

when the long touch is input for the one shortcut item among the shortcut item list displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, determining whether a sub item list of the one shortcut item is being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book;

when the sub item list of the one shortcut item is not being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, displaying the sub item list of the one shortcut item in a size smaller than the shortcut item list between the one shortcut item and a next shortcut item in the upper UI activation region of the e-book; and

when the sub item list of the one shortcut item is being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, hiding the sub item list of the one shortcut item in the upper UI activation region of the e-book.

20. An apparatus for turning electronic book (e-book) pages in a portable terminal having an e-book function, the apparatus comprising:

an e-book viewer configured to execute an e-book, control a display unit to display a shortcut item list in an upper user interface (UI) activation region of the e-book, and when a shortcut gesture comprising a touch for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list followed by a horizontal drag and a release of the touch is input, control the display unit to display, on a screen, a page corresponding to the one shortcut item; and

the display unit configured to display the shortcut item list in the upper UI activation region according to the control of the e-book viewer, and display the corresponding page of the e-book on the screen.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a sub item gesture is input, the sub item gesture comprising a touch for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list followed by a downward drag and a release of the touch, and

when the sub item gesture is input, control the display unit to display, on the screen, a sub item list of the one shortcut item.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a touch is input for one sub item among the displayed sub item list followed by a release of the touch, and

when the touch for the one sub item followed by the release of the touch is input, control the display unit to display a page corresponding to the one sub item on the screen.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a remove sub item list gesture is input, the remove sub item list gesture comprising a touch for one sub item among the displayed sub item list followed by an upward drag and a release of the touch, and

when the remove sub item list gesture is input, control the display unit to remove the displaying of the sub item list of the one shortcut item on the screen.

24. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a shortcut list scroll gesture is input, the shortcut list scroll gesture comprising a touch in the upper UI activation region followed by a horizontal drag and a release of the touch, and

when the shortcut list scroll is input, scroll the shortcut item list according to the horizontal drag in the upper UI activation region on the screen.

25. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a zoom gesture is input, the zoom gesture comprising a multi touch in the upper UI activation region followed by a drag of at least one of the points of the multi touch,

when the zoom gesture is input, determine whether a distance value between the points of the multi touch increases,

when the distance value between the points of the multi touch increases, control the display unit to display the shortcut item list of an enlarged size corresponding to the increased distance value between the points in the upper UI activation region of the screen, and

when the distance value between the points of the multi touch decreases, control the display unit to display a shortcut item list of a reduced size corresponding to the decreased distance value between the points in the upper UI activation region of the screen.

26. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the e-book viewer is further configured to:

determine whether a long touch is input for one shortcut item among the shortcut item list displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book,

when the long touch is input for the one shortcut item among the shortcut item list displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, determine whether a sub item list of the one shortcut item is being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book,

when the sub item list of the one shortcut item is not being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, controls the display unit to display the sub item list of the one shortcut item in a size smaller than the shortcut item list between the one shortcut item and a next shortcut item in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, and

when the sub item list of the one shortcut item is being displayed in the upper UI activation region of the e-book, control the display unit to hide the sub item list of the one shortcut item in the upper UI activation region of the e-book.
