Abstract

There is provided a planar inductive battery charging system designed to enable electronic devices to be recharged. The system includes a planar charging module having a charging surface on which a device to be recharged is placed. Within the charging module and parallel to the charging surface is at least one and preferably an array of primary windings that couple energy inductively to a secondary winding formed in the device to be recharged. The invention also provides secondary modules that allow the system to be used with conventional electronic devices not formed with secondary windings.

14. A charging module for a battery charging system, said module comprising a charging circuit and a charging surface for receiving a secondary module for charging an electronic device, wherein said charging module comprises a transformer primary winding substantially parallel to said charging surface, and wherein said charging circuit is separate to said charging surface.

15. A charging module as claimed in claim 14, wherein said charging circuit is connected to said primary winding via a cable.

16. A charging module as claimed in claim 14, wherein said charging circuit is integrated with an AC/DC adaptor that provides power to said charging module from an AC power source.

17. A charging module as claimed in claim 14, wherein said charging module is part of a system having a system circuit, and said charging circuit is integrated with said system circuit.

18. A charging module as claimed in claim 14, wherein said charging circuit is separate to said charging surface such that heat transfer from said charging circuit to said charging surface is minimized.

19. A charging module as claimed in claim 14, wherein said charging circuit is separate to said charging surface such that electromagnetic interference from said charging circuit to said charging surface is minimized.
