Abstract

According to one aspect, the present invention provides a substantially two-dimensional surgical mesh comprising a base material, a first area having a first characteristic and a second area having a second characteristic that differs from the first characteristic. The surgical mesh may further comprise a third area having a third characteristic that may be the same as or different from the first and second characteristics, and so on.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a body portion; and

an arm portion, the arm portion having a width that is less than a width of the body portion,

the body portion having a first area and a second area different than the first area, the first area having a first material having a first property, the second area having a second property different than the first property.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of arm portions.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion has a first side and a second side opposite the first side, the first area being located on the first side of the body portion, the second area being located on the first side of the body portion.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first property is selected from the group consisting of:

(a) promote tissue response, (b) bioinert properties, (c) block or delay tissue ingrowth, (d) reduce tissue adhesion, (e) reduce tissue erosion, (f) promote bonding to adjacent tissue, (g) biodegradable properties, and (h) generate a distinctive color.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a mesh material.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a knitted mesh material.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a woven mesh material.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a mesh material, the mesh material having pores greater than or equal to 5 microns in width.

9. The apparatus claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a non-bioresorbable polymeric filament that includes a polymer selected from a polyolefin, a fluoropolymer, a polyester, and combinations thereof.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes a non-bioresorbable polymeric filament that includes a polymer selected from a polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyethylene terephthalate, and combinations thereof.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first property includes bioinert properties and the second property includes promoting a tissue response.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first area includes a first material that is formulated to reduce tissue erosion, the second area includes a second material that is formulated to promote bonding to tissue.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first area includes material selected from the group consisting of:

carboxymethyl cellulose, hyaluronic acid, alginate, collagen, biodegradable polymers, growth factors and combinations thereof, the second area includes material selected from the group consisting of;

biodegradable polymers, growth factors, fibrinogen and combinations thereof.

14. An apparatus, comprising:

a body portion;

an first arm portion extending from the body portion, the first arm portion having a width that is less than a width of the body portion; and

a second arm portion extending from the body portion, the second arm portion having a width that is less than the width of the body portion,

the body portion having first material, the first arm portion having a second material differ than the first material, the second arm portion having a third material different than the first material,

the first material having a first property, the second material having a second property different than the first property, the third material having a third property different than the first property.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first property is selected from the group consisting of:

(a) promote tissue response, (b) bioinert properties, (c) block or delay tissue ingrowth, (d) reduce tissue adhesion, (e) reduce tissue erosion, (f) promote bonding to adjacent tissue, (g) biodegradable properties, and (h) generate a distinctive color.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first material includes a mesh material.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the material includes a knitted mesh material.

18. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first material includes a woven mesh material.

19. The apparatus claim 14, wherein the first material includes a non-bioresorbable polymeric filament that includes a polymer selected from a polyolefin, a fluoropolymer, a polyester, and combinations thereof.

20. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising:

a third arm portion extending from the body portion.
