Abstract
A system and method are disclosed that allow a user to select when messages related to medication events are sent and to select the content parameters of those messages. In one aspect, a medication dispenser is configured to notify a messaging processor when an identified medication that was not previously loaded in the medication dispenser is newly loaded into the medication dispenser, and the messaging processor is configured to send a message to a user through a communication link upon receipt of this notification. In another aspect, the medication is identified during a review of a new medication order issued by a doctor.

30. A system for managing medications, the system comprising:

a medication dispenser configured to securely store a plurality of medications and to allow authorized users to have access to the medications; a workstation communicatively coupled to the medication dispenser, the workstation configured to accept input from a user, the input comprising an identification of a medication that is not currently stored in the medication dispenser and a request to deliver the identified medication to the medication dispenser; and a messaging processor communicatively coupled to the medication dispenser; wherein the medication dispenser is further configured to provide a notification to the messaging processor when the identified medication has been delivered to the medication dispenser, and the messaging processor is configured to send a message to a user of the medication dispenser via a communication link upon receipt of the notification from the medication dispenser that the identified medication has been delivered. - View Dependent Claims (31, 32, 33)

34. A method of managing medications, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a medication order comprising an identification of a patient and an identification of a medication to be administered to the identified patient; entering the identifications of the medication and the patient into a medication administration system; determining automatically with the medication administration system whether the identified medication is stored in a medication dispenser associated with the current location of the identified patient; issuing a request automatically with the medication administration system to deliver the identified medication to the medication dispenser if the identified medication is not currently stored in the medication dispenser; receiving with the medication administration system a notification that the identified medication has been delivered to the medication dispenser; and sending automatically with the medication administration system a message to a user associated with the identified patient that the identified medication has been delivered to the medication dispenser.
