Abstract

A device and related method of use is provided for the capture and removal of various unwanted objects present within the body'"'"'s anatomical lumens. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the device includes an external elongate member; an internal elongate member disposed within the external elongate member; and a retrieval assembly connected to the internal elongate member and retractable within and extendable from a lumen of the external elongate member. The retrieval assembly includes an end configured to be selectively open or substantially closed.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

an outer elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

an inner elongate member disposed within the lumen of the outer elongate member and extending along a longitudinal axis, the inner elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a retrieval assembly extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member and having a proximal end and a distal end, the retrieval assembly secured to the distal end of the elongate member adjacent the proximal end of the retrieval assembly;

wherein the retrieval assembly includes a self-expanding scaffolding.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the retrieval assembly is configured be substantially open or substantially closed.

3. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the distal end of the retrieval assembly has a cross-sectional area generally orthogonal to the longitudinal axis

4. The medical device of claim 2, further comprising a closure mechanism affixed to the retrieval assembly proximate the distal end of the retrieval assembly.

5. The medical device of claim 4, wherein the closure mechanism comprises an actuator extending proximally within a lumen of the inner elongate member and a material interwoven into the scaffolding of the retrieval assembly.

6. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the inner elongate member is slidably disposed within the outer elongate member.

7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the scaffolding comprises a plurality of wires that cross each other at points.

8. The medical device of claim 7, wherein at least some of the wires being connected at the points and at least some of the wires are unconnected at the points.

9. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the retrieval device is configured to be selectively expanded or collapsed.

10. The medical device of claim 9, wherein the retrieval device is configured to be substantially collapsed when retracted within the outer elongate member.

11. The medical device of claim 9, wherein the retrieval device is configured to self-expanded when extended beyond the lumen of the outer elongate member.

12. A medical device comprising:

a first elongate member extending along a longitudinal axis, the first elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

a second elongate slidably disposed within the lumen of the first elongate member;

a retrieval assembly extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the first elongate member and having a proximal end and a distal end, the retrieval assembly secured to the distal end of the first elongate member adjacent the proximal end of the retrieval assembly; and

a closure mechanism affixed to the distal end of the retrieval assembly, the closure mechanism configured to selectively open and close the distal end of the retrieval assembly;

wherein the retrieval assembly includes a scaffolding comprising a plurality of wires arranged in a pattern.

13. The medical device of claim 12, wherein the retrieval assembly is retractable within and extendable from the lumen of the first elongate member.

14. The medical device of claim 13, wherein the retrieval device is configured to be selectively expanded or collapsed.

15. The medical device of claim 14, wherein the retrieval device is configured to be substantially collapsed when retracted within the outer elongate member.

16. The medical device of claim 12, wherein the plurality of wires cross at a plurality of points.

17. The medical device of claim 16, wherein at least some of the wires being connected at the points and at least some of the wires are unconnected at the points.

18. The medical device of claim 12, wherein the closure mechanism comprises an actuator and a flexible member

19. The medical device of claim 18, wherein the flexible member is interwoven with the plurality of wires adjacent the distal end of the retrieval device.

20. A medical device comprising:

an outer elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

an inner elongate member disposed within the lumen of the outer elongate member and extending along a longitudinal axis, the inner elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a retrieval assembly extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the first elongate member and having a proximal end and a distal end, the retrieval assembly secured to the distal end of the first elongate member adjacent the proximal end of the retrieval assembly; and

a closure mechanism including a flexible member and an actuator, the flexible member affixed to the distal end of the retrieval assembly and the actuator having a proximal end configured to be actuated by a user, the closure mechanism configured to selectively open and close the distal end of the retrieval assembly;

wherein the retrieval assembly includes a self-expanding scaffolding.
