Abstract

Devices and systems to measure luminal organ parameters using impedance. In at least one embodiment of an impedance device of the present disclosure, the impedance device comprises an elongated body having a distal body end and a pair of detection electrodes positioned in between a pair of excitation electrodes located at or near the distal body end, the pair of detection electrodes configured to obtain one or more conductance values within a mammalian luminal organ within a field generated by the pair of excitation electrodes, wherein a measured parameter of the mammalian luminal organ can be calculated based in part upon the one or more conductance values obtained by the device and a known distance between the pair of detection electrodes.

Claims

1. An impedance device, comprising:

an elongated body having a distal body end; and

a pair of detection electrodes positioned in between a pair of excitation electrodes located at or near the distal body end, the pair of detection electrodes configured to obtain one or more conductance values within a mammalian luminal organ within a field generated by the pair of excitation electrodes;

wherein a measured parameter of the mammalian luminal organ can be calculated based in part upon the one or more conductance values obtained by the device and a known distance between the pair of detection electrodes.

2. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein the known distance between the pair of detection electrodes is between 0.5 mm and 1 mm, inclusive.

3. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein the elongated body is selected from the group consisting of an elongated wire and elongated catheter.

4. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein the elongated body comprises a catheter defining a lumen therethrough.

5. The impedance device of claim 4, further comprising:

a suction/infusion port located at or near the distal body end, the suction/infusion port in communication with the lumen and configured so that a fluid can be injected through the lumen and out of the suction/infusion port.

6. The impedance device of claim 4, further comprising:

a pressure sensor located at or near the distal body end, the pressure sensor configured to detect a pressure within the mammalian luminal organ when at least part of the impedance device is positioned therein.

7. The impedance device of claim 4, further comprising:

a balloon coupled to the elongated body, the balloon configured for inflation within the mammalian luminal organ when at least part of the impedance device is positioned therein.

8. The impedance device of claim 7, wherein the pair of excitation electrodes and the pair of detection electrodes are positioned inside of the balloon, and wherein the measured parameter is indicative of the inside of the balloon.

9. The impedance device of claim 7, wherein the balloon is configured to breakup materials causing a stenosis within the mammalian luminal organ.

10. The impedance device of claim 7, wherein the balloon is configured to receive a stent, and wherein the balloon is capable of inflation to position the stent within the mammalian luminal organ.

11. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein the measured parameter comprises a cross-sectional area of an inside of the mammalian luminal organ.

12. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein the one or more conductance values are indicative of one or more injections of saline within the mammalian luminal organ.

13. The impedance device of claim 1, further comprising:

a data acquisition and processing system configured to receive at least part of the impedance device and operable to receive and process data from the pair of detection electrodes to calculate the measured parameter.

14. The impedance device of claim 1, wherein a distance between one of the pair of detection electrodes and one of the pair of excitation electrodes is between 4 mm and 7 mm, inclusive.

15. An impedance system, comprising:

an impedance device, comprising;

an elongated body having a distal body end, and

a pair of detection electrodes positioned in between a pair of excitation electrodes located at or near the distal body end, the pair of detection electrodes configured to obtain one or more conductance values within a mammalian luminal organ within a field generated by the pair of excitation electrodes; and

a data acquisition and processing system configured to receive at least part of the impedance device and operable to receive and process data from the pair of detection electrodes to calculate the measured parameter;

wherein a measured parameter of the mammalian luminal organ can be calculated based in part upon the one or more conductance values obtained by the impedance device and a known distance between the pair of detection electrodes.

16. The impedance system of claim 15, wherein the known distance between the pair of detection electrodes is between 0.5 mm and 1 mm, inclusive.

17. The impedance system of claim 15, wherein the impedance device further comprises a balloon coupled to the elongated body, the balloon configured for inflation within the mammalian luminal organ when at least part of the impedance device is positioned therein.

18. An impedance device, comprising:

a pair of detection electrodes positioned in between a pair of excitation electrodes located at or near a distal body end of an elongated body, the pair of detection electrodes configured to obtain one or more conductance values within a mammalian luminal organ within a field generated by the pair of excitation electrodes, wherein a measured parameter of the mammalian luminal organ can be calculated based in part upon the one or more conductance values.

The impedance device of claim 18, wherein a distance between the pair of detection electrodes is known, wherein the measured parameter comprises a cross-sectional area of the mammalian luminal organ, and wherein the cross-sectional area is calculated based in part upon the distance between the pair of detection electrodes.

20. The impedance device of claim 18, wherein the distance between the pair of detection electrodes is between 0.5 mm and 1 mm, inclusive.
