Abstract

A method and system for tracking exercise and personal security includes providing hardware for a portable computing device that allows the device to be worn on a person. The method includes receiving a selection of an exercise option with the portable computing device and receiving a selection of an automated alert option for personal security with the portable computing device while a person trains or competes. The portable computing device that is worn may display one or more biological outputs on a display and it may provide a user interface which has one or more selectable instant alert options. The user interface may also support two-way audio communications.

Claims

1. A method for tracking exercise and personal security, comprising:

providing hardware for a portable computing device operable to be worn on a person;

receiving a selection of an exercise option with the portable computing device;

receiving a selection of an automated alert option for personal security with the portable computing device;

displaying one or more biological outputs on a display of the portable computing device;

providing a user interface that is part of the portable computing device, the user interface having one or more selectable instant alert options; and

providing a user interface that supports two-way audio communications through the portable computing device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying a map on the display of the portable computing device.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein displaying the map on the display further comprises displaying a location of other portable computing devices participating in the selected exercise option.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying competition data associated with another portable computing device participating in a same selected exercise.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the automated alert options comprises wirelessly transmitting a location of the portable computing device to a server in a periodic manner.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the user interface that supports two-way communications through the portable computing device comprises a push-to-talk feature.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein one selectable instantaneous alert option comprises an emergency button that provides a wireless signal to a local law enforcement agency, a medical professional, a fire house, or a combination thereof when selected.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the biological outputs displayed comprise at least one of a heart rate, respiratory rate, glucose level, and calories burned.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying a current time on the display device of the portable computing device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein providing hardware for the portable computing device further comprises providing one of a bracelet and one or more straps for securing the portable computing device to a person.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising wirelessly transmitting a location of the portable computing device.

12. A method for tracking exercise and personal security comprising:

receiving biological data corresponding to a selected exercise option;

processing the biological data according to the selected exercise option;

storing the biological data in memory;

receiving a current location of a wearable wireless portable device;

storing the location of the wearable wireless portable device in memory;

monitoring a wireless channel for a personal security alert that is generated by the wearable wireless portable device; and

if a personal security alert is received from the wearable wireless portable device, then relaying the alert to one or more predetermined recipients.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising monitoring a communication channel for an inbound phone call for the wearable wireless portable device.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising monitoring a communication channel to determine if the wearable wireless portable device will accept an inbound phone call.

15. The method of claim 12, further comprising tracking a location of a plurality of wearable wireless portable devices.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising transmitting a location of a plurality of wearable wireless portable devices over a wireless channel.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising transmitting geographical coordinates of the plurality of wearable wireless portable devices.

18. The method of claim 12, further comprising receiving biological data from a plurality of wearable wireless portable devices.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising comparing biological data from the plurality of wearable wireless portable devices and calculating performance metrics.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the wearable wireless portable device comprises a first wearable wireless portable device, the method further comprising transmitting the biological data and performance metrics from one or more second wearable wireless portable devices to the first wearable wireless portable device.

21. A computer system for tracking exercise and personal security comprising:

a processor operable to;

receive a selection of an exercise option with a portable computing device;

receive a selection of an automated alert option for personal security with the portable computing device;

display one or more biological outputs on a display of the portable computing device;

provide a user interface that is part of the portable computing device, the user interface having one or more selectable instant alert options; and

provide a user interface that supports two-way audio communications through the portable computing device.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor is further operable to:

display a map on the display of the portable computing device.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the processor is further operable to:

display a location of other portable computing devices participating in the selected exercise option.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor is further operable to:

display competition data associated with another portable computing device participating in a same selected exercise.

25. The system of claim 21, wherein an automated alert option comprises the processor operable to wirelessly transmit a location of the portable computing device to a server in a periodic manner.

26. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor operable to provide the user interface that supports two-way communications through the portable computing device further comprises the processor operable to provide a push-to-talk feature

27. The system of claim 21, wherein one selectable instant alert option comprises an emergency button that provides a wireless signal to a local law enforcement agency, a medical professional, a fire house, or a combination thereof when selected.

28. The system of claim 21, wherein the biological outputs displayed comprise at least one of a heart, respiratory rate, glucose level, and calories burned.

29. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor is further operable to:

display a current time on the display device of the portable computing device.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor is further operable to:

wirelessly transmit a location of the portable computing device.

31. A computer system for tracking exercise and personal security, the system comprising:

means for facilitating wearing of a portable computing device on a person;

means for receiving a selection of an exercise option with the portable computing device;

means for receiving a selection of an automated alert option for personal security with the portable computing device;

means for displaying one or more biological outputs on a display of the portable computing device;

means for providing a user interface that is part of the portable computing device, the user interface having one or more selectable instant alert options; and

means for providing a user interface that supports two-way audio communications through the portable computing device.

32. The system of claim 31, further comprising:

means for displaying a map on the display of the portable computing device.

33. The system of claim 32, further comprising:

means for displaying a location of other portable computing devices participating in the selected exercise option

34. The system of claim 31, further comprising:

means for displaying competition data associated with another portable computing device participating in a same selected exercise

35. The system of claim 31, wherein one of the automated alert options comprises means for wirelessly transmitting a location of the portable computing device to a server in a periodic manner.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein the means for providing the user interface that supports two-way communications through the portable computing device comprises means for a push-to-talk feature.

37. The system of claim 31, wherein one selectable instant alert option comprises an emergency button that provides a wireless signal to a local law enforcement agency, a medical professional, a fire house, or a combination thereof when selected.

38. The system of claim 31, wherein the biological outputs displayed comprise at least one of a heart rate, respiratory rate, glucose level, and calories burned.

39. The system of claim 31, further comprising:

means for displaying a current time on the display device of the portable computing device.

40. The system of claim 31, wherein the means for facilitating wearing of the portable computing device on a person further comprises means for providing one of a bracelet and one or more straps for securing the portable computing device to a person.

41. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, said computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method for tracking personal exercise and security with a portable computing device, said method comprising:

receiving a selection of an exercise option with the portable computing device;

receiving a selection of an automated alert option for personal security with the portable computing device;

displaying one or more biological outputs on a display of the portable computing device;

providing a user interface that is part of the portable computing device, the user interface having one or more selectable instant alert options; and

providing a user interface that supports two-way audio communications through the portable computing device.

42. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the program code implementing the method further comprises:

displaying a map on the display of the portable computing device.

43. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the program code implementing the method further comprises:

displaying a location of other portable computing devices participating in the selected exercise option.

44. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the program code implementing the method further comprises:

displaying competition data associated with another portable computing device participating in a same selected exercise.

45. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein one of the automated alert options comprises wirelessly transmitting a location of the portable computing device to a server in a periodic manner.

46. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein providing the user interface that supports two-way communications through the portable computing device comprises a push-to-talk feature.

47. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein one selectable instant alert option comprises an emergency button that provides a wireless signal to a local law enforcement agency, a medical professional, a fire house, or a combination thereof when selected.

48. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the biological outputs displayed comprise at least one of a heart rate, respiratory rate, glucose level, and calories burned.

49. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the program code implementing the method further comprises:

displaying a current time on the display device of the portable computing device.

50. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the portable computing device comprises at least one of a mobile telephone, a personal digital assistant, a pager, a smartphone, a navigation device, and a hand-held computer with a wireless connection or link.
