Abstract

A TANK filter is provided for a lead wire of an active medical device (AMD). The TANK filter includes a capacitor in parallel with an inductor. The parallel capacitor and inductor are placed in series with the lead wire of the AMD, wherein values of capacitance and inductance are selected such that the TANK filter is resonant at a selected frequency. The Q of the inductor may be relatively maximized and the Q of the capacitor may be relatively minimized to reduce the overall Q of the TANK filter to attenuate current flow through the lead wire along a range of selected frequencies. In a preferred form, the TANK filter is integrated into a TIP and/or RING electrode for an active implantable medical device.

94. A process for tuning a TANK filter to attenuate RF current flow through the TANK filter due to electromagnetic energy induced onto an implantable lead in an MRI environment, comprising the steps of:

providing a TANK filter having an inductor electrically connected in parallel with a capacitor;

measuring frequency attenuation of the TANK filter; and

modifying physical characteristics of the inductor and/or the capacitor until a resonant frequency of the TANK filter attenuates induced current flow at a pre-selected, center MRI RF pulsed frequency or range of MRI RF pulsed frequencies.

95. The process of claim 94, wherein the modifying step comprises the step of physically removing a portion of the inductor and/or the capacitor or adding material to the inductor.

96. The process of claim 95, including the step of modifying the physical characteristics of the inductor and/or the capacitor such that the TANK filter has an overall circuit Q wherein the resultant 3 dB bandwidth is on the order of MHZ.

97. The process of claim 95, wherein the modifying step includes the step of removing at least a portion of at least one electrode plate of the capacitor in order to reduce the capacitance value and thereby shift the resonant frequency of the TANK filter.

98. The process of claim 97, including the step of using an abrasive microblaster to remove at least a portion of the at least one electrode plate of the capacitor.

99. The process of claim 97, including the step of using an laser to remove at least a portion of the at least one electrode plate of the capacitor.

100. The process of claim 95, wherein the modifying step includes the step of shorting one or more turns of the inductor to one another.

101. The process of claim 100, wherein the shorting step includes the step of adding a conductive material between one or more turns of the inductor so as to electrically short the turns of the inductor to one another.

102. The process of claim 95, wherein the TANK filter includes one or more inductor shorting segments which are removed.

103. The process of claim 102, wherein the shorting segments are removed by microblasting, laser trimming, high velocity water jet cutting or mechanical abrasion.

104. A process for tuning a TANK filter to attenuate RF current flow through the TANK filter due to electromagnetic energy induced onto an implantable lead in an MRI environment, comprising the steps of:

providing a TANK filter having an inductor electrically connected in parallel with a capacitor;

measuring frequency attenuation of the TANK filter; and

modifying physical characteristics of the inductor and/or the capacitor until a resonant frequency of the TANK filter attenuates induced current flow at a pre-selected, center MRI RF pulsed frequency or range of MRI RF pulsed frequencies, and the TANK filter has an overall circuit Q wherein the resultant 3 dB bandwidth is on the order of MHZ.

105. The process of claim 104, wherein the modifying step comprises the step of physically removing a portion of the inductor and/or the capacitor or adding material to the inductor.

106. The process of claim 105, including the step of using an abrasive microblaster or a laser to remove at least a portion of the inductor and/or the capacitor.

107. The process of claim 105, wherein the modifying step includes the step of removing at least a portion of at least one electrode plate of the capacitor in order to reduce the capacitance value and thereby shift the resonant frequency of the TANK filter.

108. The process of claim 107, including the step of using an abrasive microblaster or a laser to remove at least a portion of the at least one electrode plate of the capacitor.

109. The process of claim 105, wherein the modifying step includes the step of shorting one or more turns of the inductor to one another.

110. The process of claim 109, wherein the shorting step includes the step of adding a conductive material between one or more turns of the inductor so as to electrically short the turns of the inductor to one another.

111. The process of claim 105, wherein the TANK filter includes one or more inductor shorting segments which are removed.

112. The process of claim 111, wherein the shorting segments are removed by microblasting, laser trimming, high velocity water jet cutting or mechanical abrasion.
