Abstract

An item of information (212) is transmitted to a distal computer (220), translated to a different sense modality and/or language (222), and in substantially real time, and the translation (222) is transmitted back to the location (211) from which the item was sent. The device sending the item is preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone (210). The device receiving the translation is also preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone, and may advantageously be the same device as the sending device. The item of information (212) preferably comprises a sentence of human of speech having at least ten words, and the translation is a written expression of the sentence. All of the steps of transmitting the item of information, executing the program code, and transmitting the translated information preferably occurs in less than 60 seconds of elapsed time.

Claims

1. A cell phone configured to cooperate with a distal translation service, the cell phone programmed to:

receive a spoken command from the user;

send outgoing information derived from the spoken command to the distal translation service;

receive incoming information derived from the translation service; and

render the incoming information in a different modality from the spoken command.

2. The cell phone of claim 1, wherein the different modality is sight.

3. The cell phone of claim 1, wherein the cell phone includes a visual display, and the incoming information is rendered as an image on the display.

4. The cell phone of claim 1, wherein the different modality is touch.

5. The cell phone of claim 1, wherein the different modality a command modality.

6. The cell phone of claim 1, further programmed to render the translation by executing a computer command using the incoming information.

7. The cell phone of claim 1, further programmed to render the translation by wirelessly sending a command signal to a recipient device.

8. The cell phone of claim 1, further programmed to render the translation by sending a command signal to a recipient device using a wired connection.

9. The cell phone of claim 1, further having a permanent data storage capability of at least 4 megabytes.

10. The cell phone of claim 1, having a facility to transmit the outgoing and incoming information using a local network.
