Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for a device to quickly determine if data is being sent to it. If no data is being sent to the device, the device may return to a sleep mode so as to conserve energy. The present invention includes organizing and transmitting, one at a time, all device destination identifiers. If a message listing search indicates that no message is being sent for a device, the device can continue with any other activity that needs servicing, or if no other activity is pending, it may shut down to conserve power until the next wake up period arrives. If the search returns a positive indication, the count value when the identifier is found can be used to determine the location of the pointer to the message.

Claims

1. A method for use in a wireless device, the method comprising:

the wireless device receiving a message listing via a wireless interface,

wherein the message listing includes a plurality of destination identifiers and a plurality of message pointers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers is associated with a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers points to a respective different message;

the wireless device detecting a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers that corresponds to the wireless device; and

the wireless device receiving, via the wireless interface, a message pointed to by the message pointer associated with the detected destination identifier.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the detecting the destination identifier includes comparing the destination identifiers to an identifier of the wireless device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the message listing and the message are received from a base station.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein each message pointer indicates when a message will be available for reception

5. The method of claim 4, wherein each message pointer indicates a timeslot during which a message will be available for reception.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each message pointer includes frequency information, carrier channel information, or channelization code information.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the message listing further comprises a count of destination identifiers in the message listing.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the message listing further comprises a list terminator.

9. A wireless device, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a message listing,

wherein the message listing includes a plurality of destination identifiers and a plurality of message pointers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers is associated with a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers points to a respective different message; and

a processor configured to detect a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers that corresponds to the wireless device;

wherein the receiver is further configured to receive a message pointed to by the message pointer associated with the detected destination identifier.

10. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein the processor is configured to detect the destination identifier by comparing the destination identifiers to an identifier of the wireless device.

11. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein the receiver is configured to receive the message listing and the message from a base station.

12. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein each message pointer indicates when a message will be available for reception

13. The wireless device of claim 12, wherein each message pointer indicates a timeslot during which a message will be available for reception.

14. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein each message pointer includes frequency information, carrier channel information, or channelization code information.

15. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein the message listing further comprises a count of destination identifiers in the message listing.

16. The wireless device of claim 9, wherein the message listing further comprises a list terminator.

17. A method for use in a wireless device, the method comprising:

the wireless device receiving a message listing,

wherein the message listing includes a plurality of destination identifiers and a plurality of message pointers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers is associated with a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers,

wherein each message pointer from the plurality of message pointers points to a respective different message;

the wireless device determining that a destination identifier from the plurality of destination identifiers corresponds to the wireless device; and

the wireless device receiving a message pointed to by the message pointer associated with the destination identifier that corresponds to the wireless device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the determining that the destination identifier corresponds to the wireless device includes comparing the destination identifiers to an identifier associated with the wireless device.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein each message pointer indicates when a message will be available for reception

20. The method of claim 17, wherein each message pointer includes frequency information, carrier channel information, or channelization code information.
