Abstract

An apparatus for insertion of a medical device in the skin of a subject is provided, as well as methods of inserting medical devices.

Claims

1. A method of inserting an analyte sensor, comprising:

positioning a distal end of an inserter on a skin surface;

applying force on the inserter without compressing a preloaded spring included in the inserter to displace an analyte monitoring assembly from a first position within the inserter to a second position, wherein with no additional user action;

at least a portion of an analyte sensor is brought into contact with interstitial fluid under the skin surface; and

a sharp carrier is disengaged within the inserter permitting expansion of the spring to withdraw an introducer sharp from the analyte sensor and the skin.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the sharp carrier is disengaged by releasing compression from a sleeve maintaining a plurality of arms in an interference relationship with the sharp carrier.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein no springs are axially compressed during inserter actuation.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein no coil springs are compressed during inserter actuation.
